Im looking at getting a 29g high, that is 30" long. Is that enough room for them? My local store doesnt stock long tanks.

Also, how big of an aquarium can I get before I need to worry about floor stength? I live in an old house (1860's) and have a basement under the ground floor where I would put it."

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==2747240 && dateTime=="07/12/18(Thu)17:12:12")

floor strength only matters if you have something like a 75 gallon on the second floor of a building, most houses are built on concrete slabs so you can put a 1000 gallon without need for reinforcement, but because your house is so old this is probably impossible. if you are putting it in the basement you can get away with a 1000 gallon or larger though, because the basement is underground and the floor is hard concrete i presume? i'v seen people with 2500 gallon ponds in their basement, so you can probably get a larger tank. For danios, I recommend a 50 long, you can put way more danios, so they school better, and maybe switch out the tetras for larger fish."

Don't tell him this as he lives in a house from the 1860s, and you have no idea. I grew up in such a house, much newer actually, 1910s, and it required floor bracing on two different occassions because of the house shifting and floorboards getting weak

You should probably become familiar with the underside of your structure so you can know if you are putting it where there is heavy support, you may even want to consider bracing under the floor. Do not listen to the other guy who tells you its nothing, because he has no idea what hes talking about in reality based on my experiences. Where you live, where the house was built etc all matters."

I'm actually super paranoid about this because I live on the second floor. I have a 20 and 30 by a wall that I suspect may not be load bearing that basically just bisects two rooms. I've got another 20 gallons at another wall that is load bearing. I too am curious just how much weight can you actually put on one small space before you should start to get worried? I'm not talking ridiculously huge bullshit I mean 55 gallons or up to 80g. 120 is absolute tops but outside what I'm talking about. I am absolutely paranoid about setting tanks somewhere and having them crash through the floor."

I meant I would put it on the ground floor, but theres a basement under it.

Size wise, I was more asking about the length, as I was told to avoid a 20 high if I got a 20, but that 20 long should be good. But a 29 high is the same length as a 20 long, so that should be ok? Thats the first Ive heard I would need 50 gallons just for danios

Ill just make sure to put it against an exterior wall, and pay extra attention to it from the basement side for a few weeks / months after, thanks."

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==2747285 && dateTime=="07/12/18(Thu)17:52:42")

In the US at least floors are designed to hold around 40lbs/sq. foot.

so say a room that measures 20X20 feet would have 400 sq ft, and could hold a minimum of 16,000lbs. This is roughly equal to a 1,600 gallon tank and stand.

of course floors don't automatically break if you overload them. In real life you could probably put a 3,000 gallon tank or even a 4,500 gallon tank in that room without breaking the floor. It would just be risky.

Also the way floors are designed means the footprint of the tank doesn't matter as much. Obviously you don't want to put a fuckhuge tank on just one or two joists, but floors are designed to spread the load out over the entire floor by transferring it to the joists and thus across the entire structure.

The only time you're likely to run into trouble is if the tank leaks and floods the floors, which can weaken them. But then if the tank leaks it doesn't weigh as much, right?

The other much rarer outcome is if the joists collapse sideways under the weight, but this is extraordinarily unlikely in modern homes. Joists are nailed top and bottom and both ends, and usually braced as well, they don't fall over easily.

Your floor is designed to safely hold things much heavier than aquariums, for example king-size water beds. They're also designed to hold things of extreme weight and small footprint, like jacuzzis and refrigerators and stuff. Realistically there's no way you can get a fish tank that risks breaking your floor without you know, cutting out doorways, halls, and stairways to get the huge thing in the building. And if you're doing that then bracing up the floor isn't a big deal.

so really weight is never a concern. Nothing you can afford will break your floor. If it does, your building wasn't up to code and needed to be broken anyways."

Unfortunate. Corydoras pygmaeus or hastatus could match. They are pretty small and don't dig much. I would put in smaller plants or moss roots / stones into it.

Also, how hard is it to obtain shrimps in the US? There I would get probably 25 shrimps for 25 €. Its easier to start with a large group right away, especially in such a big tank."

10 gallon tank with a betta, shrimp, and some snails, if you really don't want to lose any fish skip the shrimp, they can be iffy. just put gravel in the tank, put water in it, put plants in the gravel, attach a filter, wait around one month for the thing to cycle, then add the snails, after the snails comes the betta, then after that comes the shrimp. space out each addition by around a week so you don't strain the beneficial bacteria."

However, my shrimp do keep dying and I don't know why. I have never been able to keep them alive for long. The guppies don't attack them. They can be fine for maybe a month and then they start getting sluggish and I find them dead on the bottom of the tank, their corpse also usually ignored by the guppies.

Just wtf am I even doing wrong? Sometimes they will get this milky color and go opaque instead of clear before dying. What is causing this? Are they getting a bacterial infection? They're cheap but I'm sick of losing my shrimp."

Well mine are in a community tank with guppies and cories so they probably always get a huge amount of food, especially when I throw peas in there because the fish don't eat the eater membrane (not talking about husks, the membrane around the flesh) which the shrimp clean up. There's also usually tons of flakes that get to the bottom that they often get at before the cories and guppies finish them off, or pieces of bottom feeder pellet. This is not counting the algae or if they possibly eat the pond snail menace, or the decaying plant matter."

You're a pretentious moron who thinks he's a scientist.

You're trying to breed softwater tetras in the same environment as hardwater shrimp. Even if your tetras laid eggs, that's the easiest part. The challenge comes from rearing the fry. You've got adult fish in the tank that will eat the eggs/fry. Your tank is lightly planted and barely looks established at all, so your fry will quickly starve to death unless you prepare infusoria a week or two in advance."

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==2747593 && dateTime=="07/12/18(Thu)22:03:19")

how many shrimp can you fit in a 30g? also besides wrapping pantyhose over a filter, where do i buy a decent sponge filter? and if i got a sponge filter, would that be fine with guppies or other fish?"

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==2747596 && dateTime=="07/12/18(Thu)22:04:23")

Two ways you can try: Either cut the grass and let it float to the surface and collect with a net or hold a net above the grass you are cutting and collect that way. I use the former method myself. I wouldn't touch the grass itself because it has fairly delicate roots and you could easily pull it up."

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==2747644 && dateTime=="07/12/18(Thu)22:30:46")

I''m a different anon. I'm not trying to breed shrimp. I only added them in because they're cool to watch and because they help eat detritus in the tank. As I said, my guppies largely completely ignore the shrimp. The only time they interact with them is when a shrimp has grabbed a large piece of pea or try to run off with a whole bottom feeder pellet and the guppies are all imma gemma sumadat and the shrimp eventually drops it and backs away as the guppies go crazy on the food. So it isn't an issue of guppies attacking shrimp.

I know nothing about shrimp diseases and suspect most people are completely ignorant as well but it keeps happening so I am not quite so sure it is bacterial infection. I only suspect that because that community is...rather vibrant. I've had massive blooms before, usually when I introduce a new plant. I just don't know what's doing it but yeah I'm starting to suspect maybe it's something in the water. I've got a Pure (iirc?) filter over the sink faucet but I do see white residue when a puddle dries so I've always been rather leery of that fact, it's just that it's never seemed to bother the fish. Although this summer I have smelled a faint sulfur smell from the bathroom sink's water before, so idk. Maybe I should try raising a few in a separate tank with bottled water and observe what happens?"

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==2747645 && dateTime=="07/12/18(Thu)22:31:27")

make sure you get a check valve

i went through a bunch of different shit filters for years before i discovered sponge filters. for small applications, they are much better than hob filters because there's no splashing fucking water that evaporates out like a bitch and etc. sponge filters are really good for bettas too."

The pump came with a check valve. And I bought the tank as a kit, so the filter was just included.

I do want to put a betta in the tank after I can move the danios out so I might add a small sponge filter and move the included filter to the larger tank as an extra filled with bio media or something.

Thanks for the good advice."

TDS measure total dissolved solids, meaning anything in the water.
This is not how water values would actually be, but just for example:
>have 99 parts iron
>have 1 part calcium
TDS meter reads 100 parts

>have 99 part calcium
>have 1 part iron
TDS meter reads 100 parts

The TDS reading doesn't tell us what is actually in the water, just that there is something there. gH and kH test kits in the hobby actual test for calcium, which is what we are trying to measure. So use those two to measure water quality for shrimp"

An interesting observation. The fry are quite distinct when compared to typical Endler fry as they appear to have some sort of orange bulbous...thing (or lack of a better term) where the fish's chest (?) would be. Regular Endler fry does not have this. Is it part of the egg? I am unsure when these fry were born, but from what I can tell, there is only two of them. This is generally true unless he is kind of an asshole. Females can also get kind of bitchy and territorial if you don't have a planted tank or much room nor places to hide, then they'll go pretty aggro. But of course the thing is, then you can only have the one, and also they may take a strong disliking to other fish such as cichlids and it's particularly dangerous with other labyrinth fish like gouramis.

I once had a betta with a goldfish (I know I know, I moved them once I was able to get more set ups) and the betta took a supreme disliking to the goldfish and kept nipping at him. So I would say, certain fish roughly or slightly larger than betta size with flashy colors and shiny scales might piss off especially the male.

You actually can house a fuckton of males together no problem and also can house a fuckton of males with few females.

The thing you have to keep in mind about guppies is it's like raising chickens. In fact, guppies remind me of chickens a *lot*. The males need to establish their pecking order. I would advise if you're doing this just add them and keep an eye on them with plants and space to run and hide in one batch and don't keep adding. You can add like one or two awhile later but don't get them piecemeal it just keeps their power struggles in chaos that much longer.

Then watch out carefully for who is being bullied and if they're ganging up on one male and trying to peck him to death. Normally they will all eventually chill out and just make small shows of strutting around flashing themselves to other males the way roosters do.

The main problem, in hens as well as guppies, is they'll exhaust the female eventually and leave her in poor shape from constantly chasing around and attempts to gang bang. She'll be even more exhausted from constantly giving birth. So it is better for the fish to either have lots of females or none, although lots you damn well better have a plan for dealing with the fry."

Well, its not a whole lot of money either way. I wish their bigger tanks would go on $1/gallon. The last time they did that, I neglected taking advantage of the sale. Oh well. Got a 20 gallon last time. Might try to get a 40 gallon for $50 or however much they are. I don't really have room though. Maybe if I switch out my king bed for a twin, although the misses won't like that one bit!"

This sounds about right. Maybe it's time to shift my plants around

Guppies mostly at this point, bottom half of the tank belongs to the kuhlis though. I'm thinking of putting my current guppies in the pond and getting some that actually look nice. My halfblack and mystery females haven't popped out an interesting looking fry in months"

"Goddamnit, I am in trouble with my pump.
Well, my fish are

The pump stopped working about three hours ago after a loud crackling/gulping noise.
>an Eheim 160
It wouldnt even move water, much less pump any air bubbles into it.

I took it out, scrubbed it, only normal gunk, exhanged the filter and put it back.
I heard the same gulp/crackle sound, it now only pumps water, but doesnt add any airbubbles into the stream.

LFS is closed, so 16 hours before I get a new pump for my tank.
Will the fish be fine during the time, or should I find a homebrew solution in the meanwhile to oxygenate it?
My tank isnt heavily loaded, And the gourami can breathe air, but there is a load of shrimp, some Oto cats and a school of rasbora I worry about."

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==2749370 && dateTime=="07/14/18(Sat)10:07:28")

How much is the 5.5 normally?"

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==2749377 && dateTime=="07/14/18(Sat)10:27:42")

You don't have any other supplies? Not even a normal air pump? I don't know where you live, but surely there is another store that sells something you could use to get by. Check Criagslist for a used air pump to get you buy until you can get a replacement internal filter. Kind of sucks you have the shrimp in there, otherwise I would say just do water changers or something."

I searched trough craigslist and such.
I got desperate and created a facebook profile, and some kind soul from my block had a 10gallon pump he didnt currently need and I could borrow it.

My tank is 25 gallons though, but I wont refuse the help.
I run my old pump to break surface tension and the smaller pump on all the power its got to create oxygen.

An empty one of these will make air bubbles if you have one available. Has to be 100% clean though, no chemicals in it before."
