I finally made my work place buy an iron so I could stop using my Weller WCTCP at work. I purchased this very iron for them, and it actually works a lot better than I expected. It heats up great and keeps it's temperature, even when dumping a lot of heat in to a connection.

Also, it includes the chore boy tip cleaner as well as the sponge. I just threw the sponge away because amatures that use this iron at my work are going to have a lot better luck only using the dry tip cleaner and never even knowing that the sponge existed.

I think I paid right around $100USD for the iron plus several extra tips. I would definitely recommend it."

One quick twist vs. several presses or keeping the buttons pressed for seconds. The usual reason for replacing a rotary control with some buttons is cost reduction or "modern look", not usability improvement.

That said, I don't adjust the temperature often enough for it to matter. And my iron has presets for the most common temps, so usually just one press is needed."

Sorry, i was browsing /3dpg/ when writing this. I don't get why you two are getting your knickers in such a twist, i'm just sharing an affordable soldering iron that heats up faster than a standard hakko clone and has digital temperature control. I use an analog Weller station myself, but they're too expensive to reccomend.

>Who gives a fuck? What kind of fucking autism do you have to believe that upgradable firmware makes a fucking soldering iron superior?

For one it lets you flash the firmware if the microcontroller gets bricked or needs to be replaced. Secondly it allows messing around with more effecient algorithms and custom features.

>Who gives a fuck? Soldering stations barely take up any space in the first place.

When you have a soldering station, a hot air station, a desoldering station, a microscope and a fume extractor on your desk you start to value space a little more."

When you factor in the price of a power supply capable of heating as quickly and as powerful as the 888, you're already approaching the price of it. Whats more is that for less money, you get worse ergonomics, no power supply, no brass wool tip cleaner, no silicone grip, no silicone guard, no stand, top of the line chink engineering, and worse reliability

btw a WES51 is about the same price as the 888d

>For one it lets you flash the firmware if the microcontroller gets bricked or needs to be replaced. Secondly it allows messing around with more effecient algorithms and custom features.
Who the fuck worries about firmware bricking or needing to be replaced or upgraded? Hakkos and Wellers weren't designed by some chink retards who have no sense of reliability

>When you have a soldering station, a hot air station, a desoldering station, a microscope and a fume extractor on your desk you start to value space a little more.
If you already have a soldering station, why do you need a shittier soldering pencil which will take up as much space (power brick and soldering stand is comparable to the 888)"

I dunno, how good do they say it is? I like mine and it performs great, but the UI is kind of shit and I think I would have preferred the analog version.

>>1415449
It performs really great, consistently outperforming a lot of common bench units like 936s or WES51s and basically all the chinese 936 clones, but it lacks most of the conveniences stations have. The lead is whatever shit PVC cord is on your DC PSU and the cleaner is a little 2" tray and sponge. The ground also has to be attached separately to the back of the unit so that's another wire dangling about. The one I got came with a tiny wire stand but desu it doesn't really need one since you can just lay it flat and the tip stays off the bench.

>>1417288

Only the tip gets hot. You can touch the metal base or neck while it's running and it won't burn you.

The temp was a little unstable and it was a shit to calibrate because the cal pot wasn't even lined up with the hole on the faceplate. I do enough soldering that I figured, fuck it, and got the Hakko. It's still pretty cheap and the attention to detail is just better.
