A few ways to improve this. Make the handle of the hammer much thicker, right now it looks like a toy in his hands and the ratio between the head/handle is way off, that would break with one swing.

fix the posture to make it look like there's effort in holding the hammer. it looks light for him when it probably shouldn't be. Do that by fixinf the position of his right arm (his right) and also by fixing the grips on the handle."

your values aren't right they get way too dark for the parts youre referencing. even then a low definition webcam ref with no distinct key light is harder to push 3 dimensionality. personally i would have used the picture in the middle to reference my colors because its much harder to fuck up warm colors on skin.

anyway another reason why you feel it looks flat is because of the darkness of your features like the mouth and the eyes when as you can see in the "pure value" black and white versions theyre much less contrasted and much lighter. value and color exist in relation to other values and colors. if you soften those things to be more accurate i think it will look much more pleasing"

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==3517623 && dateTime=="07/13/18(Fri)23:36:26" && image=="fdsfds.jpg")

Even though it's not supposed to be realistic I think the eyes are a little too big. I mean they are almost touching, you should always keep in mind their distance. Even in anime, the rule is the same. Also, the hair looks a bit too much. Maybe you should also try a simpler style shading focusing on using mostly a hard brush, it would make your image more pleasing and fitting to the style you're pursuing."

"Is doing this useful?

I got told a while ago by someone when I posted my drawing here to use Drawabox. So I started, and... holy shit. I don't think I've had less fun drawing in my life. It really demotivated me because drawing is definitely something I want to get better at, but this made it seem like a chore, and I wasn't enjoying it.

I know I sound like a babby but if my drive to draw was once "hell yeah even if I'm shit let's do this" to "fucking hell I don't want to do this again" then I don't think it's a good exercise for me to do. I wanted to focus on drawing bodies and proportions first, and of course, for that I need to know my anatomy. I've taken to drawing over statues to identify the muscle groups and then trying to recreate them myself. My question is - is this USEFUL?

I don't want to fool myself into thinking I'm doing something productive when I'm actually not, you know? Will this actually help me improve my understanding of anatomy, or is it just a meaningless filler-exercise that doesn't actually do anything? I feel like it could help, but at the same time,"

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==3519751 && dateTime=="07/15/18(Sun)10:06:43")

What's wrong with draw a box? Are the line exercise tedious? is every exercise tedious?

Keep in mind that you don't need to do all those exercises exactly as they appear.

There is a book, Dynamic bible by Peter Han. The book contains small exercises for drawing but the exercises are just warm ups, NOT lengthy sessions.

The reason I mentioned him is because Peter Han taught the draw a box guy. They use the same techniques.

The book should be on the book thread. If not, try searching the archives on

The entire point of draw a box is to start thinking in 3 dimensions when you draw THAT'S IT.

You need to draw from life and things you like, learn about design and how to best represent objects. You don't need to be laser point accurate, but you DO need to be convincing

Also no draw a box won't improve your anatomy and the anatomy section was taken down by the Uncomfortable because he said it wasn't good enough

The exercise teach you to draw with fluidity and confidence and how to break objects down into basic shapes"

Yeah guess the neck was pretty damn long. No, I didn't trace or use any 3d software. I basically copied 1:1 pictures of my own hands though. Aside from things like the neck being too long or that foot being too big, I like how the body turned out. I'm just not so good with complicated costumes... most of my practice so far involved nude and semi-nude. But I really wanted to draw her. I spent a while trying to invent a pose, and it took me a while to trace her from paper to digital and make changes. It would really suck to have to start over, so I don't wanna if this can still look nice if I make a few changes and also compensate with nice colors/rendering or something"

That water should have a cast light / (slight) color reflection onto the underside of the brush. (That amount of light is going to be severely limited by whatever is coming from the sky) - [seems as if your using incandescent bulbs in photographing this piece, judging from your whitest white] - {which you should replace with daylight bulbs, asap} The arm is passable. The waves, you should paint with a reference. I can tell they are waves, but they don't have the translucent quality of water. Your singular blue that you've used different values off comes off as flat. The clouds are my favorite part. You have a lot of work to do, but conceptually it's not terrible. If you're entire goal of the piece conceptually is to represent a paintbrush literally creating a wave, you better make it a nice fucking wave."

If you actually practiced instead of relying on tracing and using grids, the drawing would take you about 10 - 15 mins. you also dont need to spend so much time on your drawing, because like you said its going to be covered with paint, you can add all the details later.
theres nothing wrong with using grids to help you speed up the process, but you cant use them as replacement to knowing how to draw. Plenty of artists use grids to speed up the process and to get the exact likeness of the model, but they already know how to draw.

are you drawing or painting? you don't need so much detail, you add it with the paint."

I mean it depends on what you're doing imo. A lot of what I focus on is the framing, and I'm drawing onto the canvas. Like, yeah, I could MAYBE be able to shave off time in the long run if I focused my efforts on being able to perfectly eyeball a drawing on a 12x16 or bigger or whatever, but for what porpoise really?
>theres nothing wrong with using grids to help you speed up the process, but you cant use them as replacement to knowing how to draw.
I agree. But my issue with A LOT of the mindset among the dingdongs on this board is that Hand Drawing is like THE ONLY thing anyone focuses on being able to do. And if you're not making art that highlights your ability to Hand Draw you eat an endless amount of shit.

To me there's a narcissism to this kind of obsessive focus on ONLY the fundamentals. As far as normies are concerned, it's all doodles. Whether a person is capable of realistically hand drawing versus whether they just graphite transfer means NOTHING to potential consumers afaick tbphwyf.

like, yes knowing the fundamentals of drawing is important, but so is knowing how the fundamentals can be subverted. Every working painter I've talked to uses grids, projection, or graphite transfer FIRST. They hand draw if they have creative wiggle room or can fuck around a bit."

It's a series of acrylic paintings over a span of years as I race Van Gogh to complete more paintings in less time and survive more gunshots to the chest.

But part of the series is that there's an evolution of techniques based largely on criticism I've received on /ic/. Basically when I used graphite transfer I ate shit for tracing, then I started doing grids and I ate shit for cheating, then I did a few hand drawings like >>3525089 and >>3525094 and a few others during the last few threads and I was called pretentious or whatever."

ok yeah you're totally right. No part of my 1000 painting series in which I'm racing Van Gogh in total paintings by producing memeschlock solicited through anons on 4chan is totally lacking in creativity. There aren't ANY cyberpunk qt cartoons so I can appreciate why you would think it isn't creative.

nobody cares about your faggot sketches. nobody will ever care about your ability to hand draw. And being able to hand draw doesn't make you creative. It makes you a boring, basic bitch.

If someone wants you to make them a quick painting, how many of you have ANY experience with that? How many of you haven't made a single painting and then act like uppity monkey cunts about le rulez of sketching? If you're older than like 20 and you're still obsessed with your ability to hand draw you should probably just kill yourself."

>but what if someone asks you to do a quick painting of them, not their photo, do you have any experience with that?
yeah I have practical experience from years of going to art school and shit. And while being able to proportionally draw figures from life is important if you're a student, it doesn't necessarily need to be in practical life. It's like learning cursive.

But yeah more to your point, if someone asked me to draw them from life for this series, I'd tell them that's not the process for the series, because it isn't. If I had time with the subject I'd much rather spend that time taking pictures and being a weirdo about making them stretch their face muscles and stuff. I'm interested in catching expressions that happen spontaneously and can't really be held, and it's a series based around crowdsourcing ideas anonymously from the internet.
>you are trash
yeah you all say this like it's supposed to be offensive or something. You should see my workspace. Plus we live in an exceptionally trashy culture and there's never been a time when subversive schlocky paintings of memes and reaction faces where more in demand. Trash is funny and time is entropy etc.
>you are no better than the digital kiddies that can't survive without tracing and Ctrl+Z
and yet my work is weirdly much higher valued than theirs. weird how that works huh. What even is money tho?"

>is that why you are spending your time tracing over and painting boring ass portraits?
well it's actually an evolving process. The first 150 were mostly all graphite transfers, now I'm on the grid stage and I'm like 10 paintings away from 300, where I start shifting to a looser and more abstracted freehand mini-phase followed by a projection phase where I start goobing with pointillism and parallel line portraits and stuff.

And I'm always open to suggestions for meme portraits whose asses wouldn't be boring by your standards."

>why do you care about that? thats pretty boring
EXACTLY it is boring. It's like the scriptwriting process to me. There's plenty of different techniques by which a person can write a script, and they're all generally pretty goddamn boring.
>that's something a person that can draw would do, but without grids.
And my thing is that I like exact framing and proportions and junk. And I'm also producing paintings.
>I know you are probably in the same autism spectrum as Illastrat, but atleast he doesnt trace shit.
And he fucking should. His aesthetic suffers from his shitty cartoony drawing style. makes it look like some tryhard schizophrenic kid shit.

There is a fundamental desperate narcissism to kiddo cucks that are obsessed with trying to demonstrate how good they are eyeball drawing. Nobody cares! Being a "good artist" kind of stopped being about draftmanship with the invention of the fucking camera. If all you're bringing to the table is that you can draw good, you're one of tens of millions of people. Nobody cares about your doodles.

How many grid blow ups have you done? What is your experience with painting or printmaking or anything OTHER than basic bitch sketching? Well yeah. That's kind of a fundamental aspect of the series. It's kind of entirely focused on following attempts at analog reproduction of digital memes and freeze frames of reactions and stuff.
>You have no imagination.
I'm producing a 3 hour experimental film that's buried in part 3 of a 10 part youtube how to paint series called "how to paint trump" that's tracking as I desperately avoid finishing any paintings for years while spiraling out and going insane for years under the pretense of trying to better understand Trump and what his hair means. I've been in production since January 2017, capturing timelapse footage of essentially everything I've worked on as well as progress pics and skits as my hair and beard have grown out and my workspaces have evolved and degraded while I cycled through different forms of drug and alcohol and self abuse through time and space. Plan is to then go back and shoot host on camera segments, starting with the end of episode 3 where I look like an lcd hobo in a bomb shelter, then episodes 4 through 7 with beard, then go back and slowly trim away beard for segments to be spliced into the stream of conscious timelapse stuff, then go back and shoot episodes 1 and 2 and the intro to 3 while clean shaven. As a goof. I'm also writing a book about the nature of the psychologically subversive active measures warfare being conducted against children by foreign antagonists as a result of the extensive amount of research I've done for the Trump project.
>You sound ignorant making all these assumptions.
you sound boring and gay.
>FYI the hand in this painting also looks bad.
yeah it's ok for now. still got a few years before it needs to be done.

yeah and the limitations and rules are what give it a novel aesthetic imho. Van Gogh drew thick guidelines and grids all over the canvas, which led to him having to use lots of paint to cover, which is what he's now famous for (other than the insanity and dismemberment, which is really all that matters)

Oh now it's about making "beautiful painterly loose works?" You said "I want to DRAW more loosely" you uppity piece of shit. My suggestion is to try DRAWING LOOSELY, not rendering shit on fucking photoshop to look "painterly" like a goddamn autist.

And I use photoshop for every single piece I work on. yeah that's perfect for me. You're a free whore.

I did. I was told by some other anon just like you in my last containment thread that whined that I shouldn't be making my own threads and I should just be posting in the draw threads.

You reap what you sow, anonymous.

calmer than you are dude.

potato tomato.

That's fine. I think my initial suggestion, that drawing irl is probably more important for learning technique than if you're doing it through photoshop, still applies.
>Also there's no way in hell that I using anything but digital, personal preference.
Sounds like a personal hang up to me. If being a "good artist" is about what YOU are capable of, and you're only capable when you have the aid of a computing machine and $700 software, what are you really worth?

Is there much actual demand for prints of photoshop "paintings?" That shit is so much easier than all this goddamn canvas prepping and physical paint mixing bullshit. Asking for a friend.

I'm not. There's like 300 paintings. Most of the shit I've posted are things I've been working on this week/month.
>Stick to your "better" pieces.
Why? This is a fucking drawing thread on a critique board. I don't care about being validated by anonymous dipshit kids with their anime photoshop drawings. I post recent shit because every once in a while actual critique or commentary that I can use in the future slithers through all the buttblasted projection.

You can get 12 packs of 11x14 panel for cheap as fuck. You can paint on cardboard. You can get acrylic paints for like dollar a bottle sets. All purpose 25 brush set on amazon for $8.
>whereas digital you can experiment infinitely without spending a dime
How much is your computer? Are you renting photoshop or did you pirate it?

Also, time is money. Time is the only currency that actually matters. And you're potentially wasting it trying to learn only how to draw with every crutch available to you. Neurologically/psychologically,
a lot of what "learning" is, is an extension of traumatic stress and conditioned response. You learn how to stop fucking up by fucking up and being forced to live with the consequences of your mistake. The problem with computer-assisted learning as a means towards encoding improvement is that you can just edit+undo every fuck up immediately. There's no wabi sabi to what you're doing.

>i know this is a hard concept for you to understand because your mom buys all your art supplies

dude you don't know how to read. I'm doing a 1000 painting series where I'm racing Van Gogh, who famously used grid technique. Also, this is literally the entire reason I'm here arguing. Are you fucking retarded?

Most of the first 150 were graphite transfers. Most of the next 150, which I'm working on, are grids. It's one thing when I get some hysterical anonymous tween HAHAHAHing at me about how special they think they are in a random thread, but like, I'm SOLELY here to talk about using grid technique since >>3525053 .

Except what are you actually learning to do that a computer isn't already doing way better? And what are you creating that has potential value? And what's your goal? What are you working towards?

Like if you're trying to get into some kind of technical industrial grind work I guess but it still seems fucking stupid and ultimately self-defeating to me to ONLY learn through a computer. You're learning how to use a program WAY more than you're learning how to make interesting art. I mean from the textures they use in game. Obviously, if you're doing hand painted textures the whole point is to emphasize that painted aesthetic, otherwise you might as well go pbr and use all the fancy tech to mimic realism.

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==3527475 && dateTime=="07/19/18(Thu)15:17:29")

Looks like you're studying anatomy before you are ready. Start with a simple skeleton, then add another layer with blocked shapes, then another layer with muscle, then detail, etc. Your lines are shaky and appear unpracticed, meaning you haven't put in the hours.

Try filling one piece of paper each day with circles and freehand straight lines, all coming from the shoulder/ elbow, not wrist."

Make a simple routine out of it. At my office, each morning when I'm having my coffee and getting ready for my day, I'll take out a lined notepad and freehand trace the lines, trying to make them as straight as possible. Then turn it sideways and try to make it into a grid.

Someday a colleague is going to see this notebook of grids and think I'm an absolute lunatic."

I'll try and improve my linework too. It just feels like doing homework for a subject you hate. I'm not really sure how brushes work in photoshop so I just use the default one. I wanted to get better at art before I even thought of that stuff.

I'll try this too, thanks anon. It'll take me a while to get better but I'm hopeful. Sometimes I know what I want to do and I can't do it and it just makes me feel even worse than if I'd not tried at all. I'll get there eventually.

With, in my opinion."

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==3527502 && dateTime=="07/19/18(Thu)15:37:10")

As long as you're motivated to learn and put in the hours, you'll get better eventually. Don't just sit there and do whatever "assignment" someone tells you to do. Go out there, look for artists you think are good at what they do, and learn from how they do it. If one doesn't work for you, hop onto the next. It's all a learning process."

>Is doing this useful?
No. You're drawing awful shapes that don't correspond to the muscles underneath. Richer, Goldfinger, Peck, Bammes, whatever references you can get for anatomy books. Get Scott Eaton Anatomy to learn the important surface muscles (his courses are not drawing courses but artistic anatomy) in video form. Practice practice practice. A little bit of knowledge will make your drawings go a long way. Figure books like Huston and Hampton also help which the drawing aspect so you can apply your advanced knowledge to the simpler constructions."
