FFL also turns away a LOT of people.
There are no end of skinny, perfect 20/20 guys from Eastern Europe who have already done time as a conscript.

I had a buddy who was a Marine and even got to go to Jump School. He didnt make promotion cut (not for lack of trying) and was not allowed to remain after ETS.

He tried to get PMC Jobs but the heyday was 2004ish. So no joy.
He tried LE work but didnt like it.
So he says he is going to France.
So off he goes thinking he is going to make it.

It should be noted that he had no legal problems, not divorced, no kids, and was still in oorah shape.
He got turned away his second day. They had, according to him, LINES of guys who looked lean and rangy.
He was told that his loyalty was in question because A: He was American and B: he had been used to good kit and amenities.

He was termed a "flight risk" because they just didnt see him going to Africa for 1600€ a month at age 24.
1600€ for an East Euro is a King's Ransom

The national guard is much more combat arms oriented if that's what you're interested in.
Also, the guard receives state as well as federal funding, and that typically translates into more opportunities to be sent to training/schools.
Reserves are probably better if you want to do intel or something because there will be more promotion potential for those jobs than in the national guard."

Some jobs dont exist in certain states in either branches. Education benefits are slightly different, and jobs are slightly different. i have a terminal graduate degree so educational benefits won't really help me unless i can use them at community colleges to take classes i might be interested in, like various trades courses or reupholstering.

also, i haven't been in a pool for over a decade and even back then i could barely swim. should i take some swimming lessons prior to trying to join? i'd most likely try to get into OCS."

Switching to active duty is a bitch, so dont worry about it for the forseeable future."

there's a marine captain(?) who occasionally does "marine question time" that would probably be of use to you.
Check in every now and then and ask him stuff, then check back in hours later to see if he replied maybe.
I'm enlisted but have asked my own officers about it, generally it just seems to be regarding slots open and where you stacked in the class...

However the Marine Corps is big on #diversity for its MOS's so it's not sequential down the list of top picks and top students.
Take a list of the slots open, then divide those slots into 3 separate lists and finally they try to accommodate the officers while also filling needs of the Marine Corps.
So hot jobs are generally taken primarily by top of the class and then a few other guys get lucky who were middle of the class (per se)
Repeat this convoluted process until all slots are filled.

The idea being that you don't want shit like supply officer to be stacked with retards and shitty leaders, so you force some solid candidates into that field as well.
Granted I'm enlisted and this is all secondhand, I've never done extensive research on it because fuck that. Take this post with a major grain of salt and ideally rely on commissioned Marine anon to give you a solid rundown and advice."

No way to get an MOS locked in unless it’s JAG or Pilot. You’d have to compete for it at TBS. that being said, if you are smart and can convince your Staff Platoon Commander to fight for you to get a specific MOS and you aren’t a turd burglar, then you have a decent chance."

Alright, we got a few options here, although they are all active, since I dont believe reserves or guard send newbies for flight school(but I could be wrong).

67J are the medevac chopper pilots
15A are the rest of them

Although, you will still have to branch choose, there is no pilot option through active army OCS. I do know for a fact that going WOFT is the best way to become a pilot. Alot of guys go woft, then switch to 15A when they can. Or they just stay warrants forever. Reason being, that once you hit O3 in 15A, they put you in a desk or leadership position. With warrant you fly forever. But if you do switch to reserves you can fly until O4, but thats it.

If you dont know how to swim, probably best to learn. Especially if you end up having to go to sere."

Yeah for people who do stuff purely to get a job on the outside that a degree can land you, I don't get why they don't just get the degree. There's a ton of programs to help you, the DoE probably even has scholarships for this sort of thing... it's totally do-able, no need to rely on the GI bill if you don't want to join.

Every org and agency under the govt has scholarships and some are them paying for your school while paying you to go and you have X years obligated to work for them afterwards. So a guaranteed job after getting paid to go to school with guaranteed internships? Pretty great deal if you're only considering enlisting into the mil for the 9/11 gibs"

"As someone who has been in for almost 14 years, my opinion on commitment times are kind of skewed. Its really easy to do the military forever, you just got to not be a lazy fuck who doesnt stay in shape, got to be someone whos mature enough to understand not every job(unit) has a great boss or team, and that military service is a job and that you need to treat it as one. There are too many guys who assume every unit is gonna be the perfect one and end up quitting after a year or so because they cant handle adversity. I have found that the only reason a unit is shitty is because you got shitty coworkers, its easier to fix your peers than it is to fix your leadership. Half the time stupid shit happened was because someone didnt know how to make an adult decision. Sometimes you just gotta sit down and hold the persons hand to make them understand how shit works. Youre gonna be dealing with those people for years, so you might as well set them straight at the get go. Next on the list is staying in shape. It is so easy to get complacent once you get into the groove of how things work. I really wish there was a mandatory one on one fitness instructor instead of the take turns bullshit we currently do. Hell, they should make a mandatory annual brief about nutrition and fitness. Lastly, realizing the military is a job and nothing more. If you can get into your head that working in the mil is almost exactly like working in civilian life, you can succeed. I notice this with a lot of newer guys, when they see a nco or officer they freeze up or spaz out because they are afraid of rank. Then you got newbie ncos and officers who seem to powertrip. If you can get it in your head that they are just people too, life will be a whole lot easier. Pro tip, learn to seperate work life from off time life, be a professional during business hours, and fuck off during off hours. It makes life a lot less stressful in the long run.

You can, if you can handle everyone hating you and making your work environment a living hell. I was at one unit where we purposely gave our resident shitbag staff duty every friday.

Its random. Probably has to do with upbringing and what not. Or those people who go full robot mode during basic and become yes men. Stress affects people differently. When I signed up I was a quiet neet, and after basic I couldnt stop fucking talking. I didnt figure out the how to treat higher ups like normal people thing until a random NCO made me get up from my desk while I was working to speak to him at parade rest, and it just felt off to me. I became less accomidating and yes man after that moment. I found it easier to talk with people if you talked with them as if you were a friend, with a slight tone of professionalism. Nowadays though, especially after having been with group, im just friendly with everyone, and when it comes to mil dudes, I always throw in a sir or sarnt in the beginning of the convo, and then never mention it again. I did 35F stuff, I was just technically both, since I switched my secondary (F) to my primary (N). I was originally a 35N. Sorry to confuse you, its late and kinda tired.

How many years did you sign up for 35N? Also, cant believe they trolled you with the 6 year for 35P. So, actually having a hard time thinking of a way to explain the differences....but essentially 35N in group are gonna be doing voice intercepts on the fly, sota guys are going to be doing intercepts for specific targets from already collected cache, and regiment guys do sort of like an overall type deal, its kind of like what normal 35N in normal units will do, but less bullshit sorting work, if that makes sense. So, to make it even simpler, 35N in group support, is not the same as 35N is sota. 35N in group is gonna be tagging along overseas going where group goes. Sota keeps you still while you support group from afar. Regiment uses 35N as office guys. I would say the highest speed you can go as a 35N is 160th IF you can get a slot, its mostly 35P that get in. Second fast pace is group support, then regiment, then sota. Reason sota is last is because I know for a fact you will not do shit until youre an E6, maybe E5. You will get stuck doing analyst shit, which honestly really turned me off from 35N in the first place. But thats just me. I preferred the paperwork life of 35F and being able to see all the intel come together. I hated sorting signals shit."

I might have played regiment down more than it is. Just think of it as normal 35N work minus most of the random bullshit.

3.5 years, not bad. You better grab airborne while you can, once you hit your first unit, it gets fucking hard. FYI for sota I dont even think there is a specific pipeline for it, you just randomly get assigned. But then again, im kinda meh about sota anyways. Whenever I did have to work with them it was always a hassle because they didnt like to do specifics, they liked to give a broad scope when sending us shit. I always felt bad for our 35N who I eventually made deal with them because no one respects 35F in the intel community lmao.

For 160th, I dont think you actually do that, I think its more you set it up the equipment and troubleshoot it. You definitely get more hands on with the voice intercepts and signals intel, since there are very few 35N in 160th.

IMO if you can cut it, get in on rasp if you can. Then when you hit E5-6 after your contract is up, youll be well rounded and know exactly what unit you want to go in. So FYI when its time to go to a different unit, you actually have some choice in the matter. You just need to call your job(branch) manager and ask him where the open slots are, and then go to your unit coordinator and tell them hey I want to go to so and so slot. Its that simple. No lie, 80% of army dudes dont do this because they dont know they can."

all of those jobs you can do with degree alone. If you want military service just to have it, go reserves or guard now, finish your degree, and apply for those jobs you want after youre done with degree.

For example, you can be a customs and border patrol officer by just having a degree, or 3 years of mcdonalds tier work experience. They are actually mass hiring right now, so chances are if you signed up today, you will have the job in 6 months."

That doesn't sound too bad assuming you like what you do.

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==38525055 && dateTime=="07/11/18(Wed)00:32:53")

No you wont be able to apply for rasp in basic. FYI if you do rasp, youre gonna extend your contract to practically 5 years.

Shoe in for woft? Probably not lmao. I think the only benefit will be that you have access to flight warrants and officers to use for your letters of recommendation, but thats IF you actually get to interact with them. For the most part, intel stays in its own little corner. But if youre a social butterfly, you shouldnt have too much of an issue making new friends.

If you were looking to career, and you somehow made it through regiment, I personally would recommend going officer immediately after your first(extended) contract is over. That way you can lead a sigint team. Alternatively if you REALLY like your job, you can always stick it out for warrant officer. But you really gotta love your job."

Im saying its harder to go woft when youre already in versus street to seat.

Why not just go WOFT from the start? Why take the 35N? Just want to test the waters first?

Yes, forced early retirement is a thing. Its also common for many officers to only ever make it to O3 or O4 before they are retired. Thats why alot of officers go combat from the start to grab as many leadership schools, training, and awards before branching to special operations or intelligence to round out their career. All those jobs I listed have no chance of combat.

Benefits of joining after college is that you can go OCS and become an officer, giving you mostly leadership stuff on your resume and the pay is as good as most civ jobs.

But I recommend going reserves or national guard right now, so that you do training for a few months or so, then come back and finish your degree. For reserves and guard, you literally do the training, come home, and show up one weekend a month, and if you have to deploy(which you most likely wont within the first 2 years) your job cant fire you and your school cant give you negative marks for having to drop classes midway through. Pick a job that relates to your degree, or just do an interesting one because why the fuck not?"

I will never not recommend the reserves just because it's a way to get a taste of military administration and lifestyle and even just having to answer the ol' "Who are you and what do you do?" with "I'm a number and get checques from the government", but it's all reg force people who will have your back. regardless of element and trade, it's the reg force and lifers who have your back. actually just kidding
>shipping companies don't trade in comfort for their crews,
absolutely incorrect, it's trivially cheap to install wireless routers and repeaters are even cheaper than routers. Satellite internet is expensive but bulk high-speed compression methods exist to alleviate the cost and when you're a state military, the cost of internet in the ocean is incidental compared to pay alone, let alone fuel and berthing, on top of weapons fired during exercises helicopters lost to the ocean in training incidents and entire tankers lost to rampant make-out sessions with destroyers and garbage like this

Anyway, the internet thing, here we call it a "Riverbed" that does all the compression because, surprise-surprise, our solution comes from a company and their original unit for doing high-speed compression was called a Riverbed. I think we still use a weird set-up with an Iridium phone for internet at sea, and even then, few people get access to a computer and it's for work only. But this is Canada, a 19th world country, you know.

Just kidding. I hear the queenston will have wifi all over and the dewolfs will be a trial for wifi indoors, and the major limiting factor is actually just standing emsec policy and not actual cost."

So many paths into it. You can either go to a maritime school or start out at the bottom and work your way up.
Also depends on your country. You should def Google it though.

Even if you go navy a full four years you only get maybe 2/3 sea time counted.

>Feel better now?
Absolutely not.

For a very long time I've tried to be helpful, and I feel I've gone unappreciated. My immediate supervisor seems to appreciate me, and some people from the infantry seem to see my worth. But that's it. Even in the office --MY-- office, visitors say "Is Master Seaman so-and-so here?" as if it's some big thing that'll need to be pushed up to NavRes or something that needs to go to PCC or NRCC right this second, but no. It's always garbage like a password reset or changing the language on their workstation.

Even here, I can say "Yeah, at basic you don't talk back, but it's a grand game of learning ranks and seeing what you can get away with" and it's met with garbage from people whose papers aren't even through yet but they think they're not allowed to wear socks with boots. Others say shit like "oh yeah you'll never get internet ever again!" when even in Canada, a particularly stringent nation, has wifi in barracks and is considering having wifi on new classes of ship and just the nature of the protocol means you can get it with line-of-sight.

I don't feel better, I'm never going to feel better, I love my work, but no one else will, being happy in life is more complicated than simply destroying enemies

I have time in, and experiences other than polishing rocks at basic. It's more than a lot of shitheads here can say."

Hey, guy you were talking with last night.

Go reserves or guard. Difference between the two are only army and airforce are guard and they are state led, so slightly better funding, and if there is a state emergency you get called up to help out. Reserves you can be army, navy, af, cg, usmc. Schedules are the same for both, benefits are similar, differences are just in the jobs. Both have opportunities to deploy.

If you joined right now, then came back after a few months of training, you just resume school, while doing your 1 weekend a month obligation. The student loan repayment thing is kinda random, so dont bank on getting it. What I recommend, is join navy reserves as enlisted while youre in school, then when you finish school, go active navy officer, this way you get paid about 3-4k a month after tax, and you can pay your loan off in a reasonable timeframe, while having free housing and such to not worry about. I will add, that you MIGHT find a reserve or guard officer position where they do pay like 10k off your loan, or it has a cash bonus of 5-30k depending on the job and you can just use that money to pay the loan."

It's the worst parts of basic training without even pt to help put you to sleep at night.
Clothing issue, equipment issue, and medical took a whopping 18 hours after I stepped off the bus at 9 pm on a monday.
I literally spent every day for the next week standing on a concrete pad under an awning. Just standing there waiting to march to the next meal or the bay (sleeping quarters). The only break in the monotony were the cleaning details, typically before breakfast chow.

Is this for the border patrol jobs? Deny all shit, and make sure to be clean when you do the drug test lmao. How the process goes, is you apply, you get contacted within a week to schedule multiple choice math and english exam, then a week after you take that you schedule medical, then a week after that you fill out the background investigation forms, then a week after that you schedule fitness exam(literally 10 push ups, 20 sit ups, and up and down steps for 5 minutes), then a week later you schedule the interview(they just ask if you were ever a terrorist etc), then once your background and medical get finalized by them, you schedule your polygraph, and a 2 weeks later you get a call telling you what areas are needed for you to work in and the bonuses and such, and you choose."

So I have been trying to get to MEPS for close to 5 months now, on the day of my ASVAB (qualified for every job with my scores) I was told that my MEPS appointment was cancelled due to me having a 6 year old concussion and it has been 4 months of getting the CMO additional BS paperwork and such since.

It eventually became so annoying that my life was almost on hold, that a month ago I decided to go rock climbing with my friends...ended up hurting my ankle. I think I fractured it because I heard a pop/crack when it happened. I didn't go to the doctor cause I never lost the ability to walk on it, only had pain and I didn't want to have more shit blocking my MEPS appointment. So now its been a month or so after and I can almost do everything but run for extended periods of time on it. Should I tell my recruiter at this point and let him know I am going to go get it looked at? Should I get it looked at and not tell my recruiter? Should I just try to go to MEPS, see if I pass with it and then say I hurt it while in DEP?

Well how competitive is WOFT? The reddit post said you'll meet references who will write some letters for you and I know a Navy Chief who will write me up a letter.

My ASVAB score is a 70, that can be attributed to not studying for math, or any of it actually, but my recruiter said he either wants me to retake it instead of requesting my score for our paperwork. The guys in WOFT were all in the 90's

>My ASVAB score was 99, with a 142 GT. The average for street-to-seat guys that I know is in the mid-90s, with a GT of around 130. The other line scores do not matter for selection into WOFT.

I fucked up on the mechanical section, I have a 95 for mechanical maintenance and pretty sure the only mechanical job I can do is combat engineer.

For aviation I was thinking more along the lines of 15Q since I have the ST score for it and have a clear voice.

if you don't want a desk job, do combat arms.
the standard /meg/ recommendation for a good combat job is army 11x option 40, a pipeline that takes you through infantry OSUT to airborne school to ranger assessment and selection, with the end goal of ending up in the 75th ranger regiment, a direct action SOF unit that specializes in elite light infantry. it's not recommended to join any branch as regular infantry these days since there's no war going on, so only special snowflakes get action.
if that doesn't sound interesting to you, research army special forces (18x), army or navy EOD, combat engineers, air force PJs or CCTs, or navy SEALs."

It's pretty fucking hard physically but mentally there's nothing really too challenging provided you're not a dingus. Basically just hunker down, don't quit, and don't get injured. Batt life is also no joke though for a private or in you're in case probably with a BA/BS, an untabbed E4. You'll get hazed a shit ton until you earn your Ranger tab. And if you start slacking, you can get RFS'd pretty quickly. Overall in terms of missions, there are different teams that focus on different things as most of the training you'll get is after entering regiment as RASP doesn't really teach that much compared to SF where everyone has like two years of training minimum. Primary focus though is door kicking. There are also elements that conduct reconnaissance, surveillance, and other spooky shit but you got do well as a door kicker before you get there."

Regardless, the basic PASSING for a PFT is pretty easy too but it's the one PT test I can have sympathy for, especially after they changed the scoring system. By the end of boot though you should pass it easily, 2nd class at worst.
Being old it's not really any easier either, but you know your weaknesses, work on them. If you're slow, try to get as much out of your pullups and crunches as you can. Maxing crunches isn't that hard."

Our PT test I think is the most convoluted at this point. You can fail by not meeting a single minimum requirement in terms of raw count or by failing a minimum score in an event or by failing to obtain an overall minimum score. Are you sure you're not mistaken and mean the IST? The ISTs entire purpose is to serve as the barrier-to-entry for bootcamp. You run one in bootcamp and after that it's uphill for awhile.
It may be your recruiters just wanting to make sure you can pass one for your sake.
