i've not fished berlin lake as much as i'd like to have. any spots out there you could reccomend to a shore fag?
honestly for the flats i think i'll just run my same air cel bass line. i tried it out in the surf once and it seemed to work well enough that i'm not going to drop too much money on lines that will be used 2 weeks out of the year at best. ive also been looking at teeny lines, though again im not sure about the core strength. i really dont know anything about cobia except king rigging for them and throwing bucktail jigs at stingrays hoping a cobia is holding under it"

I totally understand that. I only fish trout streams a few times a year so I don't invest as much in that area as I do saltwater fly fishing. i feel like my ideal would be a line i could also use for pike up here. something in the way of a warm water and super aggressive head in a full intermediate would probably be good, because then i can just put on a polyleader (usually about 25 pound test) then a tippet ring, some 17 or 15 pound mono, and some #5 wire and have a pretty solid sinking line for pike, then i can probably make it work well enough with a top water just by working it fast enough.
probably either a scientific anglers sonar titan in intermediate or a rio general purpose tropical in an intermediate im kinda leaning towards the rio because they proudly sell the line as 50 pounds"

I've considered buying the Sonar Titan before myself since I visit my parents in Oklahoma a lot and I like to fish for striper and wiper there on fly. That way I could use it in the salt in NC and use it in OK when I visit. So far I've stuck with the Rio Striper for both and still haven't had much issue. if(Skid !TCEaAwseXw && title=="" && postNumber==1309046 && dateTime=="07/07/18(Sat)01:06:03")

because it's going to have to be able to stand up to 100 degree heats. steelheading in sub-freezing weather with a steelhead line and fishing on a 90 degree day with a coldwater trout line taught me that it's easier to fish a warm water line in cold water than a cold water line in warm water. considering i will probably need longer, more accurate casts for cobia than pike, i would rather have a line that is almost ideal for cobia and "works well enough" for pike.

If I don't add enough weight, my line doesn't go very far at all and I don't seem to catch anything. This was the big bottom guide. Imagine pic related, the silver part cracked straight across so the black insert is still good. So I put the JB weld all around the insert ring, then tried to line it up the best I could and clamped the whole thing back together. Shallow water, fleshy-mouthed or paper-mouthed fish where a super powerful hookset is actually counterproductive.

Personally I don't like mod-fast for pretty much anything other than soaking bait and I feel a lot of the big-name rods (mainly St Croix and Fenwick) are already a little generous on their action ratings (their "fast" is IMO a mod-fast compared to everyone else's "fast")."

Or maybe there was something shitty in the metal right at that spot."

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==1310107 && dateTime=="07/08/18(Sun)13:32:26")

Thanks anon, I’ll look into it.

A proper shakey head rod for bass fishing is going to be a medium or medium heavy power with a fast, if not extra fast, action. The way I fish shakey heads is basically pitching them into cover (think docks or isolated grass beds), or hopping them on bottom around bluegill. For both of these applications, I prefer a 6’9” MH/F from Duckett, but Duckett’s MH are more like mediums. They flex about 1/4 of the way down the blank into a solid backbone. Sometimes I fish thick worms and creature baits on shakey heads so I need the hook to punch through the plastic.

tl;dr it really depends on the way you fish a shakey head, what line you fish it on, how heavy of a weight/hook you’re using, and what your personal preference is."

There’s no risk for throwing lure underweight other than distance loss and discomfort. Going for the higher end of the lure rating improves your casting distance though. However, you have to consider the resistance of your lure during retrieve. You wouldn’t want to go aim for the higher end of the lure rating for high resistance lures like spinner or umbrella jig. I personally fish with lower end of the rating because I throw light stuffs when I can but I want my rod to be able to handle heavier stuffs comfortably once I pull them out once condition demands it."

"I haven't been able to go fishing in my local creek in too long, thanks to afternoon storms. I finally had a chance this weekend. It left me with some questions:

There's a kind of fish I haven't seen there before, and I don't know what it is. But it ignores everything I've cast, including worms on hooks, crawfish lures, jerk baits, and a few more. How do I go about catching it, to know what it is?

Secondly: There are some spotted bass in the creek again. When it floods, fish get washed down-stream, and I have to wait for some to come to that part again. But they seemed uninterested in most of what I had -- even the worms. I am thinking of taking some soft plastics to tempt them in the morning. Ned rigs, better craws, and some various worms. Is there anything in particular spotted bass like that I should consider?

The creek is no deeper than about thigh-deep, but often shallower. Pools can be waded, no deeper than knee-deep. The bottom varies from rocky to sandy to mud."

Their fins look a bit pronounced, with a lighter color along the edges. They move more slowly than the sunfish, which dart. These sort of ease from place to place. The bass seem to leave them alone, while they pester the sunfish.

I've been all over the internet (you know, Wikipedia) looking at images of fish known to have been caught here, and I haven't found anything that seems quite right. There are some with similar coloration, but a seemingly different shape. I hope catching one of whatever it is will reveal all."

It's definitely not a bass of any sort.

In case it is a sucker, is there a different lure or bait to toss its way?

Literally any time the bait went anywhere near one, it would turn away.

I'm tempted to make some impromptu carp bait with stuff in the kitchen tomorrow morning, to see if something carbs-based might attract them, though I don't think they're carp.

How do you move the rod once you toss it in the water?
I let it sink to the bottom, wait a bunch of seconds, then raise the rod giving it a couple of "bounces", and let it sink again; rinse and repeat until i reeled it in.
Alternatively I try to "swim" it using a constant medium speed retrieve coupled with a rhythmic light "jerking" of the rod, so it does not simply slide in a straight line.

"So every once in a while i will catch a bass and it will be hooked in the lower, inner part of the mouth, where the gills meet at the bottom.

When i remove the hook, the fish usually starts bleeding a lot, to the point they will sometimes get a solid red stripe of blood running down their side as i hold them

Is this a survivable thing or will they most likely die?

I usually assume they will die and finish the job and take them home to eat, even if they are undersized. On Friday i happened to hook a good sized, healthy bass like this and i was very disappointed that i had to kill and eat it.

What do you guys do in this situation?"

This is going to sound retarded but pouring full sugar Coca-Cola over the wound and gills instantly stops the bleeding. Fish blood is very different. The cells have nuclei and their clotting factors act differently. The hyoid area your talking about has a lot of vascular insertions and some larger veins and arteries. That's why you see people cut it with the gills to bleed fish out.

Alternatively they make quick clot sprays you can keep on hand or powder."

I can kind of see your point. Having a fish finder, cast net, and minnow trap is all pretty plebeian in my opinion, but learning to find forage and catch it without any of these things is pretty hard, that's where the skill aspect of live bait comes in. Plus, you still have to learn where fish hang out even with live bait, and that can be very challenging without using cheap ass radar. If you catch your bait from the place your fishing, there's pretty much no other bait you can use that will be more effective."

Most of my lures are in the 1-2 oz range but I have a few heavier spoons and diamond jigs I'd like to be able to use and the extra weight options and backbone are nice for big fish. My primary considerations are the 11' .5-2 GIS rod and either the 9' 1/2-2 or the 10' 3/4-4. 3/4-4 oz is a pretty huge range but I'm worried about distance since most of my lures are on the bottom half of that weight range."

You'll be fine. I use an 8' rod rated for 1/2-1 1/2 and I throw mostly 5/8-3/4 lures on it. It's just that the power under would be 1/4-1 and that limit me more than I would like. I also frequently throw 1 oz spoon and 1 oz bucktail plus some for the trailer, and also throw some plug that are 1 1/4 once in a while. I don't like pushing the absolute end of the rod rating."
