It always sat at the edge of your mind, but as you seal cracks in the roadway, you finally must admit it: Your recruiter got you good.
Granted, he had you by the neck from the start. You were never in a position to defer your service, but he made you think you got lucky: Good scores, good vitals, why don’t you join the mechanized? A sealed cockpit of a Panzerknecht 40 meters above and away from the worst of it, behind a suite of high tech weapons and defenses? Doesn’t it look heroic on the banners?
Of course, “it” wasn’t the pristine goliath of artillery that dominated the posters, but the utilitarian formation surrounding it.
You glance under the screens in your helmet and are treated with the dull yellow interior of your Panzermagd, crowded with manual adjustments and a backup screen charitably described as “adequate”. Really it describes most of the machine aside the insultingly small fan mounted on the inner frame.
You flick back on the DAS and glance upwards at your far more handsome companion.
The Durga strides behind you a dozen or so meters back, gingerly settling its hexapod legs onto the city road. A titan of matte composite punctuated by a trio of cannons aimed skyward. Even with your ministrations, you can see the massive Panzerknecht was making a mess of the pavement. You weren’t so much protecting the roads from the machine as much as ensuring its solid footing. In the evening sun, the machine shades the entire block.
All Knights were similar in that regard. They have a presence and gravity that’s more than mass. During training, you recall constant reminders of the importance of the knights and your duty to support them. The Knights took ground, the mechanized kept it, and the Magd maintained that order. You played schoolyard bully for the ground pounders while turning around and tending to these warlords.
The fact that this put you in a tug of war between the two does not escape you."
