Personally, I prefer Megaversal classes. I like the idea that someone is a full trained X, as opposed to some class systems where you are effectively incompetent for the first few level or aren't anywhere near where your concept is until multiclassing for five levels.

>>60771426
On the point buy side, I have to admit I've been disappointed. The obsessive focus on trying to apply a value to everything and try to make everything somehow even, when in the end it just means whomever can make a character better is going to be way better makes for unhappiness in a mixed skill group.
Trying to make everything fit in a point buy balance is my main irritation, but our group also has a guy that can't into GURPS well as the rest and he gets frustrated when his isn't good at what he wanted to be good at and we end up trying to remake his character for him.
Personally, I'd be happier strictly enforcing lens and templates, but everyone else would rather 21+ in 4 skills and competence at being a fully functional person.
That said, it's probably my distant second favorite system.

What to be a human who were-'s out into a dragon (as opposed to a dragon that can shapeshift into anything). Perhaps you'd like to play a pegasus, but with hands... We got it. Actually, you also can play a dolphin power armor pilot and and a unicorn if you just hate hands. Wanna' play a snake, ya, we got that too.

This is what happens when you rise above inferior systems like DnD, Pf, and GURP."

Best argument is probably that point-buy just works better for games that have any modern elements.

It's yet another anachronism left over from Kevin's D&D homebrew.

At this point the Sunk Cost Fallacy is so strong among Palladium and its fans that it's impossible for Kevin or anyone else to revise the system, since people own 100+ books for it and any change would be met with a lynch mob.

When Kevin passes and if he doesn't take the license with him to the grave then maybe there'll be a new edition that makes the rules more logical...but then, it won't be Rifts, will it?"

That's just not true. And since "it's all Gurps and it's all pointbalanced anyway", there's always a tremendous shitflinging match if the GM says no. Regardless of the tone or purpose of the campaign, or if the GM simply doesn't want to use a more complex sub-ruleset for the specific thing the PC is whinging for.

There's some other games this can happen with, but I'll be fucked if I've ever seen or heard of it happening in those other games. Even in Rifts, if you just say "hey, we're playing with books X, Y, and Z", people don't go read other books and scream about not getting to bring Atlanteans or Splugorth into a game about low-power tech-scroungers on the CS border. That's solely a problem with Gurps players, and between that tendency and the tendency to try and pitch Gurps as a universal solution to literally every problem in gaming?

Always wanted to play one, but kind of broken in a Rifts way
They can’t fly, but are intangible for the most part only taking damage from magic, psionics, and energy weapons
Can’t really touch anything except by attacking or using telekinesis
What motivation would they have to adventure? What could they be rewarded with from an adventure?"

Actually, it is. The only other setting that used the Megaversal System was Dimensions, but Kevin finally got around to shifting that setting under Rifts. So, using the terms interchangeably doesn't in any way lead to any confusion. Furthermore, being that it is indeed a Megaversal system you can pulg-and-play the rules you need for any setting; just like how Beyond the Supernatural™ and Ninjas and Superspies® don't use the full system because the rules are specific to the setting.

Rifts, no problem. Actually, I'll go a step further, you can play any GULPS race with any GULPS class and it will play better in the Magaversal System then in the Universal one. I mean really anon, it's in the name:
> Megaversal > Universal system
But I'll go one set further; you can a put of 4 characters, all from different systems, into the megaversal system because unlike GULPS (which forces you to convert them nigger-rigger style) the Megaversal System© takes what's there and fills in the holes with itself- dictating only the interactions with other characters and the world.

I've said it once, I'll say it again. GULPS is just a supplement for Rifts and nothing more. Buy yourself a copy of the Main Rulebook and the Ultimate Edition for a true Rifts experience."

Heres something that could be fun and useful.

Sub-space – In the least stable sub-space areas, gigantic clouds of super-ultra-heavy (atomic weight 120,000 or above) element particles float about in a light emitting ‘mist’ resembling substance. In the most stable areas, sub space resembles early 80s computer animation, and has physical laws, matter, and energy. Doors to and from sub-space are part of the natural function of the universe, and quite a few permanent, stable gateways exist, though relatively few per galaxy. Matter, energy, and physical law are essentially the same as normal space within the most stable regions of sub-space, and both regions obey all the same laws, though sub-space only obeys these laws in these most-stable pockets. Sub-space is a region of slowly revolving parallel Euclidian planes in a dimensional superstructure that is similar to spinning plates hanging mid-air, with the most-stable regions the closest to permanent natural gateways between normal and sub space. These Euclidian planes repel each other naturally, and it has been calculated that there is always at minimum 343 exponent 4, thousand miles between each Euclidian plane. Sub-spaces material dimensional superstructure is maintained by a thin cloud of particles that escape each cosmic collapse and big bang cycle due to being so far away from center mass they are unable to be recalled back. Since universes are dying and being born every second of every minute, subspace should be infinite, yet because it is fundamentally structured of normal-space matter, and because enough of it is stable enough that normal-space laws are in play, the extreme weight of sub-space keeps it at a finite number of revolving planes, though it is still a tremendously indescribably big number."

">>60783282
Time corridor – A “hallway” between now and then that doesn’t connect to either now or then, yet exists between both like a thread in a crevice between two somethings. Doors to and from time corridors are possible and likely, randomly naturally occurring in all times and places for the micro- and nano- second ranges of time. Time travel is essentially catching one of these natural flashing in and out of existence “doors”, then giving it a stable flow of energy to exist for longer so you can safely go through it, then, returning through a similar process by catching another random door and stabilizing it for a moment. Travel to/from a time corridor is almost exactly the same, except you target 1 specific time corridor to go back to. Since these random natural doors open in normal space (rarely subspace, never warp-space), particle matter aggregates in time corridors at Lagrange points to become super-dense, super-stable normal-space matter. Time corridors are not infinite, but range around 10 exponent-6 thousand million years “long” each, and naturally repel each other slightly, so never touch one another except during universe-death. This natural compression of time corridors during universe-death most usually immediately setting off a big bang due to the extreme infusion of energy and matter into normal space. The Elder Gods are involved in the existence of time corridors, the natural function of time corridors is either so tremendously complex that no race has figured it out, or some secret Elder Gods intentionally keep to themselves."

">>60783298
Warp-space – The region warp speed vehicles visit (for nano-micro-seconds only) to travel at light-speed. Doors to and from warp-space are part of the natural function of the universe, and randomly flip between open and shut for nano-micro-seconds of time throughout the universe daily at all times and places, as quantum tunneling can’t happen without a functional warp-space dimension. Microscopic inflow of random particles causes the presence of physical matter in warp space, these atoms moving naturally to Lagrange points in the warp-space’s “long hallway” resembling superstructure, these particles becoming asteroids, cliffs, mountains, plateaus, and planets. Warp space is bigger than normal space and is coterminous with all existing normal space in every possible universe that will ever exist or has ever existed, so warp space is not affected by any specific universe experiencing universe-death. Warp space consists of areas utterly beyond all known material physical physics laws, and areas more like normal-space, where some laws are in play. Even native species find it so stultifying to even contemplate the physics of how and why warp-space exists that it is most usually incomprehensible, even to them, though many of them seem to believe that it has something to do with Azathoth. Traveling to normal space from Warp-space is extremely similar to time travel, and involves stabilizing a natural door for a moment, then catching another random door and stabilizing it to go back. Time travel never results from to-from or from-to warp space journeys."

">>60783313
Void-space – The dark, bleak, cold “echo” of warp-space. If warp space was a big object casting a shadow, void-space would be the shadow. Despite being a region that is utterly devoid of physics laws for the most part, void space is full of dark matter waiting to be energized, and, any time any ship anywhere, any when, fires up its warp engines and visits warp-space for those few fractions of a second that make it travel FTL, a small amount of particles enter void-space and fly to pieces, each one of these particles instantly falling apart and the various sub-atomic bits and pieces floating around in void space forever, giving void space an extremely small positive nuclear charge which allows it to continue to exist. Void space creates the negative pressure that allows normal space, sub space, and warp space to exist and have recognizable dimensional barriers, and void space is bigger than warp space. While there is no life in void space and no reason to visit it, as there are no planets or etc there, dark matter mining can be done by using gateways to void-space. Dark Matter mining is most usually done by opening the gateway, then catching the incoming material, then simply closing the gateway. There are no existent life forms which can safely visit the void, it is utterly beyond the power of any being in existence, even azathoth and the elder gods can’t do it. The only gateways to the void that exist are a sort of ‘ghost’ image of ships that go to warp, and these ghost image gateways last less than 1/10,000th of 1/100th of a second, a new one appearing for its fraction of a second of existence each time any ship anywhere any when goes to warp. Aside from its dimensional geometry function of forcing the other forms of space to be finite, it has no known natural function, and even the elder gods do not remember a time the void wasn’t already present."

I had one where the players were mercs and a couple were mystic knights, so I said their clothes were immune.

>>60784006
The original version does hold merit, but it's a lot like digging into older editions of D&D. There are a fucking SHIT TON of optional rules involved, some of them not explicitly telling you they're optional, and if you use them all you're guaranteed to break shit. A good Rifts DM basically selects exactly what he wants and expresses it to the players so they know what kind of game/rules they're using.

As to the differences, the actual Palladium system is very defense oriented (as in if you don't have an immediate upperhand you're probably not killing your foe), as the game is expecting you to find non-combat solutions to problems despite all the many awesome power armors and weapons you have available. Also the SW books introduced a new faction and tried to make the factions more black and white. But then again Palladium is currently trying to do that because they don't want people to feel bad about playing the CS even though they're literally supposed to be nazis who are also the best chance humanity has for survival in North America.

So I know the CS creates them so they're not able to breed, not sure how other factions handle them. That being said, yes, dogboys for instance can have children with either humans or dogs. Same is true for the dolphin-biofroms, which can have children with either dolphins or humans. If human DNA is used then it can indeed have children with humans, that's the general rule-of-thumb."

And even full-time writers that have gotten possessive of their corner have had to conform or break off. As possessive as any of us are about our settings and creations, Kevin is about most of the Megaverse. Except Phase World and Nightbane, those were CJ containment zones created mostly seperately. Dead Reign became more generic than the writers intended, and Australia 2&3 didn't happen because the writer cared more about his campaign setting as he invisioned it.

This isn't all bad, does keep things mostly on the same page, something they've done since the South America books went rogue to ensure things stay on a similar track.

The uncommonness is why you won't find many towns without some kind of protector or sheriff.
It is the reason the majority of major governments on Rifts Earth are based around centralized city-states and kingdoms, with the more successful ones projecting enough protection to the surrounding area to support farming and other smaller communities.

Random villages, it more being small, being near some other protections, having a guy with a weapon, and/or luck.
The main example they point out it that North America is vast, and some people just get by on luck and a low profile to avoid a major attack."

Kevin Long, one of the earliest and best artists hired by Palladium to illustrate the Rifts books, was found to have, uhhh, "been inspired" by a lot of Japanese Gundam and other mecha anime show designs. In other words, he copied large chunks of other people's intellectual property for Rifts designs. If it had gone to court Palladium would have been sued into oblivion by the Japanese anime companies but Siembieda quickly fired Kevin Long amidst much acrimony and denials and the matter was swept under the rug. Apparently Long never forgave Siembieda for this "betrayal" and they remain mortal enemies.

I still love Long's art."

The single biggest choice to make, or randomly roll, what sort of intelligence you are. While Neural and Transferred are about as open to growth and change as most intelligent races, an AI is a bit more locked in, in terms of growth and flexibility. Which can be interesting.
For example, a PC in one of my games is an AI robot that believes it is Elvis Presley, and has most skills he has been shown to possess in his movie roles, along with knowledge of those aspects of his life and fame.
He is programmed to gloss over and ignore any inconsistencies between those memories, as well as his own mechanical nature.
So far, most think he's a low-profile borg (if aware of machine under false flesh) and/or possibly the real article (if they are aware of who Elvis is).
He and the player don't know when or who built him, though I know. Player thinks he might be a advertisement or something from the Golden Age."

Depends on the kind of game you want to play.

Going for mash-up setting, Rifts is a good way to go. Rifts Ultimate Edition and the Rifts Game Master Guide are good start point. Note, it is more master guide to game stuff spread out in books, rather than a GM guide
If you can get the original Rifts Main Book as well, I'd recommend it, the perspectives of the year PA 101 and PA 106 worlds are nice, but the RMB has a infinitely useful random roll table for supernatural threats.
The game master screens are also very useful references.
From there, if is a matter of interests and where the game goes. Though if magic is a big thing for you, the Rifts Book of Magic is very helpful, and if you're looking at dimension hoping, the Megaversal Builder is a good first stop.

Fantasy? Just grab Palladium Fantasy, snag the others as needed.

Superpowers? Heroes Unlimited 2nd Edition is a big fat book and damn near everything, but the Powers Unlimited sourcebooks add even more, PU2 in particular for more power categories.

Supernatural/X-Files/Cthulhu? Beyond the Supernatural 2nd Edition.

WoD/Invasion of the Body Snatchers/Cthulhutech? Nightbane. Between the Shadows is a very useful sourcebook with that."

Actually, Between the Shadows can help inspire Beyond the Supernatural scale stuff as well.
Also the non-powered categories in HU2 pair with it alright as well if you want to go more action movie.

Speaking of action movies...

A-Team/Spy vs Spy/Kung-Fu movies/MacGyver? Ninjas & Superspies.

Mutant animal apocalypse? After the Bomb 2nd Edition.

Mutant animal 80s? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness

Y2K Bug is Literal Electric Space Bugs Apocalypse? Systems Failure

Robotech? Robotech. Old and new, because fuck Harmony Gold's Shadow Chronicle era edits to the lore, but the newer books do have better rules/stats.

Babylon StarBlazers War Trek 5, but with more magic? Phase World and a Rifts corebook for the rules.
