In a party right now with a Rogue that has 8 Dexterity and 16 Charisma.

I'm pretty sure they did it /just/ for the look on our DM's face when they told them that they weren't going to play a Bard.

They're still the highest DPS in the party because it turns out Sneak Attacks are pretty good, and the rest of the party is built for healing/survivability."

I guess the most exotic is the Aaracokra fighter/ranger I'm playing whose wings are crippled and can only fly 10 feet before needing to land and rest. He overcompensates by acting brash, loud, and self-assured while constantly being internally terrified at being land-locked. Wears medium armor too, to justify why he doesn't use his gimp wings in front of people, so nobody in the party knows about his weakness yet."

personally, I'm good with as much or as little as you want (within reason), probably as long as there's some very basic roleplaying hook. further details and backstory hooks can come out in the course of the campaign, if need be. one of my players went in with basically "we're in a port town? oh, he's a sailor, and he drinks a lot" and really nothing more. he's one of the best roleplayers in the bunch, and he's often the de facto leader and life of the party.

that said, you came up with a good list (main motivation, place of origin, important relationships and grasp of their recent history) of things to help the DM work a player into the story, and if you want a full backstory those would be good points to hit. biggest emphasis on motivation and important relationships, I think."

if this were my game, I'd just say talk to me (the DM) about it. start with general terms of the feel you're going for ("I was in an order of knights, but got kicked out") and the DM gives you something specific to work it into, and helps with connections you can make from there ("how about the order of x? and you have friends who didn't get kicked out, and a disappointed father, etc.")

>how their level 1 fighter was a general for 10 years and decided to go adventuring for no reason

I think the issue here is that not every character concept fits a level 1 character. A level 1 Fighter soldier shouldn't be a general with lots of combat experience; they probably just finished "boot camp" or just got home from a brief skirmish.

A level 5 Fighter, on the other hand, has some class features that could fit into being an officer (battlemaster maneuvers can turn the tides of an engagement, champion's increaed combat potential is due for a promotion, EK casting spells can also boost a soldier's performance)."

>the key parts of a level 1 character backstory?
I typed this up and then realized it's not all particularly related purely to backstory but it's important stuff for level 1 characters and I like smelling my own text-based farts so I'm posting it anyway.

1. A reason to adventure. Why did they quit their previous life and what do they want to gain from their new one? What circumstances led to their new mindset?
2. A clearly defined and achievable short term goal to get them started. If you character's reason for adventuring is "get rich, then perhaps they want to chart out dragon nests to loot hoards or research locations where ruins that still hold treasure would likely be.
3. A reason to cooperate with others. If you want your character to be emotionally distant that's fine, but a character that has no reason or want to join with others in an effort to achieve his goals isn't fit for a team based game like this.
4. A tie to this world; in other words something to lose. You don't have to share this with the DM if you think that they'll be a family killing faggot, but you need something to ground your character and give them caution so you have a palpable reason not to murderhobo. Makes for more interesting characters, too."

Depends on the weapons being used, but probably not. Alternatively, point your players to investing some downtime into learning the Dual-Wielder feat. It exists for a reason, and players trying to cheat the interaction system to gain the benefits of a feat without investing are probably minmaxing too hard.

Don't listen to this guy. One isn't better they're just different things.
Barb dip on rogue is still really synergetic. You could dip 1 for unarmored defence, 2 for reckless, 3 for primal path (zealot for an extra 1d6 or bear for resistances), 5 for second attack, 7 for feral instinct if you're an assassin.

Realistically you don't need much more than unarmored AC and danger sense if you're not planning on grappling. Most of your damage comes from sneak attack, which you don't want to delay, and you don't need the two attacks for grappling.
Unarmored AC makes you SAD (dex/ con) and danger sense is fantastic with evasion. That being said you loose out on on demand sneak attack while raging which is great. On the other hand, sneak attack isn't really hard to get anyways."

You should also try and explain to the gf why your group finds her behaviour upsetting and why having her "railer" at your table would be uncomfortable for everyone involved, which should be obvious but I guess it isn't. I don't think she'll listen right away, but it's the best you can do."

Rogues can use light crossbow as their most damaging weapon, fighters and rangers make good use of longbows since it doesn't have loading. Wrong. It means you ignore the "Loading" property, but it still has the "Ammunition" property.
Ammunition: You can use a weapon that has the ammunition property to make a ranged attack only if you have ammunition to fire from the weapon. Each time you attack with the weapon, you expend one piece of ammunition. Drawing the ammunition from a quiver, case, or other container is part of the attack. Loading a one-handed weapon requires a free hand. At the end of the battle, you can recover half your expended ammunition by taking a minute to search the battlefield."

Before you read all the inevitable responses about the best way to grind your PCs into a pulp, you need to ask yourself: "Are my players having fun with the way things are right now?" If the answer is yes, you shouldn't try and fix what isn't broken to begin with.

Now if they are whining about more challenging combat, sure go ahead and pile on the pain. But if they're happy about winning everything you throw at them, then ask yourself why you need to put a stop to that?"

Compare to battlemaster

>You gain another superiority die at 7th level and one more at 15th level.
So 2 arcane arrows versus 4 to 6 (not considering the feat) dice.
If I missed something and there is a feature that gives you a third arcane arrow at a level where battlemaster still only has 4 dice you can correct me, but then that's still cherrypicking a particular level.

Being ForeverDM(tm) myself, I completely agree with you.

But if the guy who is asking for advice is still around, I'd like to ask him "Do you get your rocks off of killing the PCs?" If that's one of the ways he gets his jollies, then sure, pile on the pain. But if he can have just as much fun doing other things like building a world for his players to explore and constructing narratives with interesting NPCs to interact with, and he doesn't particularly need to kill any PCs to get excited about DMing his game, then why does he suddenly feel the need to?

I know it seems like the answer just might be obvious if he bothered to ask the question to begin with. But I would want to make absolutely certain that's how he can have more fun with his own campaign, or he just feels some sort of external peer pressure about killing his PCs because that's what all the other DMs and PCs of other games ever seem to talk about."

>so resting is never a problem
Make it a problem. Start giving them objectives outside of "clear dungeon, collect loot and xp." Time constraints are key to stopping the party from resting after every fight. Find the VIP that fled into the dungeon before they get kidnapped or killed (also works for baddies, except not letting them escape), do the thing before the dungeon collapses or otherwise gets destroyed, get the item before someone else gets to it, leave no trace (if they rest for an hour, scouts in a well-guarded area are bound to notice the hut), stuff like that. It'll still mostly be up to you though, since I don't have enough context to give you proper time constraint ideas."

You need to find ways to enforce longer adventuring days. Firstly, you can't benefit from more than one long rest in a 24-hour period. So if they just had a fight 2 hours after waking up, they have to wait another 14 hours before they can even begin a new long rest. You need time constraints built into your quests.
>if you don't explore the entire dungeon in two days and come back with the macguffin, this important NPC will succumb to a curse
>hostages die
>bad guys take the macguffin because they were faster
Etc. Random encounters on the road are something that you can just drop, for example, unless they serve the plot somehow.

That said, start ramping up the difficulty. Use numerous minions with decent HP. Like, with my 13th level party, I sometimes still use hordes of weak monsters, but when I want them to pose an actual challenge, the minions are now at least CR 2 (one of their last fights was against 12 CR 3 mummies)"

Barbarian Zealot -> force him to wis save and lose action economy
Bladesing Wizard -> force cha or str saves and watch them fold up when their tiny little HD kick in
Shepherd Druid -> RAW and RAI the druid doesn't choose what creatures are summoned, simply what CR they are. Choose thematic things that fit the environment and the Druid's powercurve will drop a bit. Also use AoE
Draconic Sorcerer -> Use stealthy enemies, get on top of the party fast and don't let them alpha strike with fireballs

sounds like fun honestly, both for the party and for the DM"

>get burned out on being DM

If you ever do DM again, make sure not to "overdo" anything so you don't burn out quite as quick.

And, in fact, I would strongly recommend you and anyone else reading start planning a definitive beginning, middle, AND END to any new campaign you kick off. A definite place to end the entire game after you've had so many adventures (try to plan it around how long it would take to complete in real life time).

Right now the typical thing to do is start up a new game with absolutely no ending in mind and just hope it will last for the rest of your life with no end in sight. Well, that's how you burn out after a while. If you plan these ends out, with hiatuses in between, you'll remain eager to keep DMing as you move on to a brand new game after you ended your last one."

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==60814695 && dateTime=="07/12/18(Thu)15:09:40")

The answer is probably “not enough encounters in the day.” Your PCs all are extremely strong long-rest dependent classes, which are most powerful when the DM uses single large encounters for a given adventuring day instead of lots of little fights.

If you don’t particularly like doing 6 encounters in a single adventuring day (because honestly unless you’re actually in a dungeon that’s ridiculous), consider using the 8hr short rest / 7 day long rest rules, which are intended to allow you to reasonably challenge your players over a longer period of time (as opposed to getting a full recharge after every fight). 7 days is a long time, so you could tweak it to 2 or 3 days or something.

Doing this means your players actualy have to budget their powerful abilities. The bladesinger’s the toughest nut to crack, but ultimately his power is still his spells, which he’ll have to be careful with."
