personally, I'm good with as much or as little as you want (within reason), probably as long as there's some very basic roleplaying hook. further details and backstory hooks can come out in the course of the campaign, if need be. one of my players went in with basically "we're in a port town? oh, he's a sailor, and he drinks a lot" and really nothing more. he's one of the best roleplayers in the bunch, and he's often the de facto leader and life of the party.

that said, you came up with a good list (main motivation, place of origin, important relationships and grasp of their recent history) of things to help the DM work a player into the story, and if you want a full backstory those would be good points to hit. biggest emphasis on motivation and important relationships, I think."

I typed this up and then realized it's not all particularly related purely to backstory but it's important stuff for level 1 characters and I like smelling my own text-based farts so I'm posting it anyway.

1. A reason to adventure. Why did they quit their previous life and what do they want to gain from their new one? What circumstances led to their new mindset?
2. A clearly defined and achievable short term goal to get them started. If you character's reason for adventuring is "get rich, then perhaps they want to chart out dragon nests to loot hoards or research locations where ruins that still hold treasure would likely be.
3. A reason to cooperate with others. If you want your character to be emotionally distant that's fine, but a character that has no reason or want to join with others in an effort to achieve his goals isn't fit for a team based game like this.
4. A tie to this world; in other words something to lose. You don't have to share this with the DM if you think that they'll be a family killing faggot, but you need something to ground your character and give them caution so you have a palpable reason not to murderhobo. Makes for more interesting characters, too."

Barb dip on rogue is still really synergetic. You could dip 1 for unarmored defence, 2 for reckless, 3 for primal path (zealot for an extra 1d6 or bear for resistances), 5 for second attack, 7 for feral instinct if you're an assassin.

Realistically you don't need much more than unarmored AC and danger sense if you're not planning on grappling. Most of your damage comes from sneak attack, which you don't want to delay, and you don't need the two attacks for grappling.
Unarmored AC makes you SAD (dex/ con) and danger sense is fantastic with evasion. That being said you loose out on on demand sneak attack while raging which is great. On the other hand, sneak attack isn't really hard to get anyways."

You need to find ways to enforce longer adventuring days. Firstly, you can't benefit from more than one long rest in a 24-hour period. So if they just had a fight 2 hours after waking up, they have to wait another 14 hours before they can even begin a new long rest. You need time constraints built into your quests.

The answer is probably “not enough encounters in the day.” Your PCs all are extremely strong long-rest dependent classes, which are most powerful when the DM uses single large encounters for a given adventuring day instead of lots of little fights.

If you don’t particularly like doing 6 encounters in a single adventuring day (because honestly unless you’re actually in a dungeon that’s ridiculous), consider using the 8hr short rest / 7 day long rest rules, which are intended to allow you to reasonably challenge your players over a longer period of time (as opposed to getting a full recharge after every fight). 7 days is a long time, so you could tweak it to 2 or 3 days or something.
