*Info on prostitution*
Please try to refrain from asking questions about prostitution.
Japan's sex industry is almost completely inaccessible to foreigners who do not speak Japanese. What is available can generally be found in the following links
Note that most of these companies are owned by the same group so behave.

*Note about the JR Pass*
Many people ask about whether or not the JR Rail Pass is worth it. It depends on your itinerary.

Plug your itinerary into Hyperdia to determine ticket costs, then compare to the below JR Pass options:
>7 day Pass: 29,110¥
>14 day Pass: 46,390¥
>21 day Pass: 59,350¥

*I really wish I could smoke some weed*
No, you can't buy weed in Japan. If you didn't bring any with you, too bad. If you did bring some with you, let us know how comfy the futon was in Japanese prison.

Please check the /trv/ sticky before asking questions. It's filled with links to great resources, many of them specific to Japan travel.

Where in Tokyo can one buy out-sized obi's for comparatively reasonable prices?

Also what are the best places to get sumo things in general like mawashi (loincloth)? Is it the sort of thing you can find in any sports shop next to football kit or do you get it from a more specialist place?"

When are you going? a lot of the interesting nightlife for me personally is during the end of the year, when they illuminate the autumn foliage near Kiyomizudera and other places.

I'd recommend going to Potoncho for socializing, an alley near Kamagawa river as well, since its super popular, so there's a lot of people and establishments that are friendly to tourists.

As for how daunting these bars are, you'll just have to look around for places without a cover charge (which might be further from the more touristy areas). The vast majority of patrons are more than happy to have anyone in their bar."

I'm looking to escape my life for a little while (just 2 or 3 weeks) at the end of the year, and I would love to just hole up in a small-ish Japanese town, rent a room, and chill out for that time. Can anyone recommend any small, comfy towns where I could escape the city and the bullshit? I know that most of Japan would fit this bill, but was just wondering if anyone had specific recommendations, based on their own travels."

> I would love to just hole up in a small-ish Japanese town

Look in the Hida area if you want to get away. Takayama is probably the biggest small town I would recommend to anyone. The express train and hida train stop at a shitload of small cities up and down the line, Takayama has enough to keep you entertained at night and things to do. Don't do small towns unless you KNOW what you are getting into with smalltowns. This includes
>nothing to do during the day than talk with older people running small stores
>walk around and what not during the day, but this will get boring after day 5
>nothing open during most of the day aside from a gas station
>1-3 train/buses stopping in, miss one to go somewhere and welp stuck doing the same thing you did the day before
>2 maybe 3 ramen shops open in town that everyone coming back goes to so usually hard to get a seat

takayama avoids those since it is big enough to be in, has hostels with bike rentals all over, or airbnbs with people willing to get a license there. Kiso might be good but with the new airbnb rules that hosts must get a license, many of the smaller places outside hubs are doing it anymore. Not sure your budget so any small towns that have hotels/places to stay can ramp up quick"

Not him but also keep in mind JET is one of many companies that do this, met people who do private teaching in small schools and the school also does english reeducation for company employees. With any English teaching job in japan keep in mind you can be put a great deal of places, just because you say "would like to live in tokyo please!" doesn't mean you stand a chance, vs the 500 other applicants that put that down. Want a job, you get to go work in Goto because that's where they need someone or someone with your qualifications, so take it or don't call us we'll call you when we need you!

Good news is some of those small places you can actually live fairly well compared to some more expensive areas, bad news is you can be stuck somewhere with not much to do."

Hey, I'm >>1432334, my gf is from Hokkaido so I've visited a few times. If you haven't already, you need to try Hokkaido soup curry, there are a heap of great places in Sapporo to find it. I think it is my favourite Japanese dish and nobody has heard about it. Also you'll find some great crab donburi.
I spent about 10 days in Hakodate alone my last trip and they have some local food, there's a restaurant chain called Lucky Pierrot but they just sell mostly western meals like burgers. Each restaurant has a different theme and they're highly touristy since only Hakodate has them. Hakodate is known for it's squid so definitely have some squid dishes like ikasomen. Another local food from Hakodate is pork yakitori, Hokkaido doesn't have much chicken so they use pork in their yakitori. You can also get dirt cheap donburi at the Hakodate fishmarket, like 400yen.
Also, try ikameshi, it's so fucking tasty, it's basically a squid stuffed with rice. It is a local food of another small Hokkaido town called Mori, theres nothing to do there so don't go but you can find ikameshi in Sapporo or Hakodate.

Pic related is some soup curry I had in Hakodate."

I'd negotiate for higher, citizenship sponsorship, reimbursement for all travel needs, or make sure there is some kind of living assistance; something over taking a 180k cut. There was a discussion about living in japan in the last general, link in the OP. Have you been for extended timeframes, stayed in tokyo more than a week, attempted getting around during rush hour, going through the processes of life there?

I love japan for vacation, but when I was thinking about working there and spent an extended time doing some work + living, it was tiring. Tokyo itself is very depressing city to live in after the 2 week honeymoon wears off of being in it. Getting up at crack of dawn to be to work ontime, staying in for extended hours compared to the US, "totally not having to go out" after work for drinks, trying to get the last train home. Not my kind of thing, I like hanging with my coworkers from time to time after work, but having required "non required" after work nomihodai is not fun after the 3rd time."

Kek. Older-ish Japanese women are well up for it. 30-45 is the sweet spot. But I think that is the kind of the case many places around the world. 30s and 40s women are slooty as fook.

You could check the TEFL general although it is generally a lot of some troll calling them all losers and then a shirtstorm erupting. From what I have heard through others here, JET is good pay for ESL and good work life balance.

JET is not a company. It is a government sponsored program.

Well Tokyo is a lot less expensive than NYC, the rent several times less expensive, but that is still a massive paycut. at 250k even in NYC you are probably coming out more ahead than 70k in Tokyo. My friend who lives in NYC makes 150k, and that is pretty much akin to 50-70k middle class standard anywhere else in the country. SO at 250 you're still doing pretty damn good.

Programming I assume?

>70k in Tokyo is eh

Lol what that is pretty damn good for Tokyo. Tokyo is not an expensive city really at all. It's like people still think it's the bubble economy and on top of that the financial crisis didn't happen or something...
You can get a solid apartment in a nice residential area of the city for between 800-1000 bucks a month. There is no reason to live in Roppongi or somewhere like that. Everything is accessible and the trains are so good."

For kyoto, yeah i'd say you could go a second time, depends on how long you were there last time and what you got to see. I only spent a day there on my first trip and will spend 1 or 2 more this next trip coming.

Loads of places, lots of which get mentioned Ta ton in these threads already. Himeji is a easy daytrip on the bullet train and has a ridiculous castle complex. Nara is an hour or so out from Kyoto/Osaka, another temple city with a giant park with herds of deer you can feed and interact with. Mt. Koya is another temple village about 90 minutes south of Osaka, it has a massive Buddhist cemetery and is famous for temples you can spend the night at like a ryokan.

Or there's places you could stop over at in between Tokyo and Kyoto. Stay overnight at Takayama, take the bus to Shirakawago for a daytrip, and continue on and stay overnight in Kanazawa."

The general rule of thumb is to buy tickets six to eight weeks out or so but prices are generally going to be a complete crapshoot. I've been tracking flight prices for an October trip since new year's and I've seen them fluctuate anywhere from 950 canuck funbucks up to 1650. In the end I just pulled the trigger on an open-jaw flight for 1200, I've been cutting on my spending for months anyway so not waiting for a 200 dollar drop that may or may not ever even happen isn't a huge deal for me.

Best I can suggest is to shotgun-blast your possible options. Track round trips +/- a couple of days (helps a lot to schedule your trip over a statutory holiday so you can use an extra vacation day to return on a Monday instead of the weekend). Also look at open-jaw flights, sometimes they're significantly cheaper and you might also save a good chunk of cash on rail travel by not having to backtrack to Tokyo."

Drinking is a social norm, doesn't mean you have to get drunk or what not. It's expected to socially drink, not uncommon to see drunks in some areas mid day in full business suits, and breaks the ice.

It's an ice breaker from the up tight social structure that japan has, many cities are very depressing to live in IMO. Concrete dungeon/jungle, pushed around like cattle, work long hours, expensive living, and tons of working; beer helps break out of that gives people an excuse to get out of that "expected normality". You will find people to talk to without drinking, but hell of a lot easier with a beer to share."

JR pass is JR only, buses and trains. However a JR pass is only really worth it when taking the bullet train lines, OR going very far distances on JR lines. Often the JR pass is going to pay for itself if you are doing Tokyo->Kyoto-Osaka->tokyo, as a round trip train is about 10-12k yen(100-120 bucks)

Pasmo works on JR lines, and metro, Suica as well IIRC. Keep in mind there are also metro day passes ~600 yen. Usually I do pasmo because a metro station is often closer that spits out one than a suica card"

Which mountain was that? I wanted to do maybe a day hike and see the peaks, but all of the hiking seemed more intense than that. I was looking at shiroumasan and was thinking I could just do like half the hike and still get some good views. What do you think? How often to buses go up into the alps? This was in gifu lots of the mountains were still snowcapped in may. The one they were talking about was Mount Hotaka, there are some other great rides up to the others as well. Based out of Takayama.

This was a bit north of takayama, in Hida, can still see some snow in the background. My phone sucked at zooming, and it also looked like this in various other places I visited around gifu. Can probably go through my phone find some more photos, had an issue with my memory card so not sure what I have/don't have.

I found out just by chilling with some locals in Takayama, bar tenders, and stuff I saw in the hostels I stayed."

Teaching in Japan varies greatly depending on where you are, who you are working for, how much you genuinely enjoy teaching, what stage of your life you're at, etc etc so I really can't recommend it one way or the other. It's definately a young mans game if you're doing the lower-level shit like ALT or eikaiwa work. If you own an eikaiwa however, you can make very good money, enough to support a family. The only people I know who do that though are married foreigners who have the spousal visa and support to open a business in Japan. Teaching at university is also good, but these teachers typically have proper teaching degrees, masters in linguistics, or doctorates, or whatever - higher levels of education than the bachelors you need to be an ALT. Keep in mind that teaching is what a massive chunk of foreigners in Japan get stuck doing. It's a double-edged sword - there's always a demand for English teachers, but there's also plenty of willing young rubes who will work for shit pay in shit conditions in shit locations. There's a very high turnover.

First you should just see if you like Japan enough to remain after the two years or so of living there. Living there and visiting/knowing the culture through media is very different of-course."

What? You are buying a voucher to exchange at the station in japan when you get there. Do not buy in japan way more cost.

1. Buy the voucher off that site
2. go to the JR station in Narita airport, or JR voucher exchange at Tokyo station(quicker usually)
3. fill out the required form that indicates when you want to activate it, confirm passport info, and understand the rules of use
4. Receive actual JR pass to show at ticket stations for use on bullet trains, and other trains.

don't get a railpass to get around Tokyo. Also don't get one for the N'EX. Get a one week railpass instead and use it on a round trip to Nagano and Osaka/Kyoto and back.
Ginza and Akihabara are contained in Tokyo. Also skip Ginza (what is it with people wanting to go to Ginza for some reason baka) unless you're a chink looking to shop.

Akihabara is one day max, depending on how much of a weeb you are.

On my first trip (which was also 3 weeks) I did:
>1 week Tokyo (including climb to Mt. Fuji and daytrip to Kamakura)
>2 nights in Hakone (one is probably fine but I found enough things to do in 2)
>4 nights in Kyoto (incl. daytrip to Nara)
>2 nights in Osaka (although one would have been fine)

If you feel overwhelmed easily Tokyo's probably a bad choice to begin with.

At the very least be willing to be flexible. Give yourself lots of options for daytrips or taking a 1/2 night stay somewhere further out so that if by week 2 you feel burnt out on Tokyo you have alternatives. There's loads of relatively quieter places easily reachable from Tokyo."

Depends on the onsen, an increasing amount of them are fine with tattoos, and if you're staying in a smaller ryokan they'll often have an in-house bath that can be privately reserved. Typically they'll have a relatively clear indication at the entrance if they don't allow them.

You kinda have to just look up where you plan to go ahead of time. I have an overnight stay booked in Kinosaki for my upcoming trip and AFAIK the town's baths all allow tattoos."

2 weeks is fine you'll be able to take in really everything on the tokyo loop without issue. You'll more than likely be able to do most the "hot spots" or things to see in a week and a day or two.

Personally I'd plan 8 days in tokyo, use google sheets to make an AM/Afternoon/Late afternoon/Night, itinerary. If you group things you want to see near by other things like, akihabara->ueno or Shibuya->shinjuku, you can knock two places out in one day with ease. I'd plan a day trip to Nagano(bus is cheap), Kamakura(cheap on the JR line), or somewhere close out of the city. You really get to see a lot of cool beautiful things just buy going out of the city a little.

There are a lot in tokyo that allow for you to come in with tats, they are just ultra touristy places. So if you are assuming to see anything like your weeb fantasies lol"

Lol what? I live in Tokyo and the big nice touristy onsens I have been to definitely do NOT allow them. I know La Qua in Tokyo Dome City does not allow them. Neither does Toshimaen.

On the other hand my local bath house in my residential neighborhood that absolutely no tourists would ever see or go too allows them. Like literal Yakuza guys with full body tattoos go there all the time. Some of them even have the pompadour hair. It is just like my Beat Takeshi movies and Chinese cartoons."

It's a simple google man. There are plenty that do, they are by no means common compared to others, but they exist to get that sweet sweet tourist money.

Some have regulations on sizes and depictions of things though. They are by no means impossible to find, they just completely will be catering to tourism, and probably not the best quality of places."

Go to the drunken clam from family guy, then just walk around, you'll find something nice, there is a cool weeb all you can drink bar that has a giant eva outside it. Drinks are like 1500 yen for an hour

Osaka is fine as a tourist I actually wish I could have stayed longer. If you want a more stereotypical yakuza japan, osaka def has that. It wasn't hard to spot them at after the sun sets.

>Best question is how long do you have total, that helps a lot in terms of time to spend at each place
It's my five-year sabbatical so I have four weeks paid time off, plus my company gives me $5000 to do whatever I want. The real doubt I have is how long I'll want to be by myself in a foreign country, but that's my problem.

So far I've thought of a day and a half in Hiroshima to visit Miyajima, the Peace Park, Hiroshima-jo and to try okonomiyaki. Next I would go to Kyoto, and I'm working on my itinerary for that now. The things I know I want to do are climb Fushimi-Inari at night and eat at Nishiki Market. I also found a bike tour online that sounds like a good way to get some direction. Then I was thinking of leaving Kyoto one morning for a day trip to Nara, taking a walking tour around Nara Park including Todai-ji, and going to Osaka that night. Stay the night in Osaka and eat around Dotonbori, and the next day do another bike tour and go to Universal Studios Japan for the Evangelion ride, because I'm a huge faggot for Evangelion. Maybe leave Osaka that night for Tokyo, and that's as far as I've gotten.

My main issues right now are deciding where to go in Kyoto (most of the temples/shrines sound very alike to me by their descriptions) and logistical stuff, like when the shinkansen between cities runs. I've looked at the JR schedule but I'd might as well be trying to read sanskrit. I'm really into videogames and technology so I'm also going to be hunting for arcades in Kyoto and was thinking of taking a tour of the Mazda production line in Hiroshima.

I know you didn't ask but it helped me to type all of this out."

Going to assume you're planning on doing all of this in one go ya? 4 weeks in japan?

First I would land in tokyo, spend maybe a week going around it getting all your tech, video game stuff out and catch up from travel. Spend a weekend in tokyo so you can do some festivals and what not. I'd grab a JR 2 week pass then have it active on your last day in tokyo. Then do the following.

2. 2-3 days in Nagano, the mountains are nice, the old town is great, lake gero is worth seeing too. Olympics held here, few hostels to stay in though. Matsumoto is cool for the bird parks. Very quite town. Then do Nagano->takayama
3. Do 3-4ish days in takayama/hida, really old town tons to do, hotsprings onsens out the ass in gero, cheap wagyu(not kobe style but close enough and half the price)
4. Take a train to Osaka, You'll probably want to stay here, there is a mini akihabara called nipponboshi with some really neat stuff to fine. Osaka is cheaper, has more things to do at night, and is easier to bounce between Kyoto/Nara/Kobe. Trains to Hiroshima/Nagasaki are departing regularly from here as well, you have a 30 minute head start from Kyoto. Spend like a week and some change here depending. Nara is a day trip, Kobe is a day trip. Not much to do outside the main attractions like deer part, beef, etc. spend like 10 days here?
That will leave you with little under a week at the end to go do anything you missed or what not.
I'd head back to tokyo, you can do day trips to Kamakura, some places in Chiba, or revisit anything you missed, may caught your eye. I would save everything purchase wise for the end of the trip so you don't have to constantly lug shit around.

Additionally you could fly into nagasaki, activate a JR pass then snake up through Japan to tokyo or even to Sapporo, seeing the entire country; though northern japan doesn't have all that much to do"

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==1434444 && dateTime=="07/14/18(Sat)19:09:54")

If you want to be flexible with what to do in Kansai what you could do instead is stay in Osaka and play things by ear. That's where the main rail hub is so if you get tired of Kyoto earlier than you thought you can easily just decide to visit someplace else the next day instead.

Also if you're an evangelion fag, there's a specialty EVA shop in Hakone that apparently sells unique merch unavailable anywhere else. Not sure how much of a detour it'd be if you're not planning to stay there overnight but the shinkansen between Osaka and Tokyo stops at the main point of rail access."

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==1434450 && dateTime=="07/14/18(Sat)19:13:35")

Thanks for the advice. I won't be spending all four weeks of my time off out there (going to make time for friends/family closer to home) but I'm going to keep all of the places you mentioned in mind. Gero Onsen sounds especially neat, so I'll be doing research into that tonight. I was wondering where to go for an onsen experience, Dogo Onsen is in the same area as Miyajima but might be an ordeal to get to and Hakone seemed like an obvious choice for its proximity to Tokyo.

>I would save everything purchase wise for the end of the trip so you don't have to constantly lug shit around
This is why I was planning to start my trip in Hiroshima and end it in Tokyo, since I can see myself buying a lot in Tokyo.

This place is on my list, but I've only heard it called Den-Den Town before. Good to know its real name.

>if you want to be flexible with what to do in Kansai what you could do instead is stay in Osaka and play things by ear
This is a great idea, my only concern is where to stay if I end up climbing Fushimi-Inari at night and it's too late to get back to Osaka that night.

>Also if you're an evangelion fag, there's a specialty EVA shop in Hakone that apparently sells unique merch unavailable anywhere else
I already had my eye on Hakone for onsen, but if there's an EVA store there then I'll definitely go."

Osaka is just generally more known for being a foodie/nightlife town. Like others have said it works great as a base for taking daytrips to other parts of Kansai, visit Nara or Kyoto until everything closes up at 5 and take the train back to hit up the food stalls and bars within stumbling distance of your hotel. Accommodations can be a little cheaper than you'll find in Kyoto too."

Those, any brand does fine. They just make it so that most of the force on your foot is taken in there. You avoid blisters.

Osaka is more business-y. I prefer to stay in it over Kyoto since I can do stuff after 6pm, if you've been to tokyo then osaka will kinda feel like tokyo part 2. Nah osaka is cool.
You've got the castle and gardens around it, the aquarium with ferris wheel above it, the even bigger (second biggest in the world) ferris wheel on the waterfront area, Dotonbori is really cool to walk around at night, nipponbashi for all your weeb needs, plus its got more to do at night than kyoto.
It works great as a base for the area, do day trips to kyoto, day trip to nara and then spend time in osaka for a couple days, then at nights you have more to do than if you were staying in kyoto."

It depends. Some have English menus, some don't. If the one you go to has a completely Japanese menu, just pick stuff and random and say "kore wa onegai shimas." It's a good way to try new food. By the way: 魚 means fish. That should help.
Go to a store and buy some cheap Japanese t-shirts. The fabric is a lot more breathable. Western t-shirts are all thick cotton material. Also, get some anti-perspiration deodorant.

If shrines are your thing, try renting a bicycle or something. A 10 minute walk to the station is agony, but a 20 minute bicycle ride with cool wind is nice."
