of course. Played a lot of it back in the day when it was released. Played quite a bit of it over the last 4 years too.

Wrath of Chronos makes it into an even harder and more extended game.

The XUMP community project just got released too - 12 new maps."

heretic is pretty much doom re-skinned.

Hexen is its own game - a different style. You may not like it if you only like doom gameplay.

That said, some of the 'puzzles' are pure cunt with their switch hunts - it really is some demon toying with the player any trying to make them ragequit."

"These threads are always enlightening as to why Hexen never caught on. I see so many people complain about Hexen's puzzles because they just don't understand how the game works. Hexen isn't about clear objectives or goals, the game doesn't spoonfeed you anything. It takes an approach very similar to Zelda 1; progression requires keen observation and use of logic rather.

The puzzles in Hexen aren't very random or unfair at all. It's true that the few clues you are given are quite cryptic, but that's because the game expects you to pay attention to your surroundings and take note of where certain objects and areas are. You'll frequently be given subtle visuals cues that can help you narrow down what to do next, such as in the second hub area where these panels will light up each time you access a certain area, making it clear where you've already been and have yet to go. But again, if you willfully neglect these clues, you may falsely think the game is unfair."

I dont think anyone ever said it was unfair. It's mostly that switch hunts get boring as fuck. Same deal with a lot of the Ultimate DOOM levels that were too damn sprawling.

Got up to the third hub (Heresiarch's seminary). Didn't finish that, but fought the Heresiarch.

It's long, it's switch huntey and you may have to write notes just in case (I came close to that but ultimately didn't).
But what turns people off the most is the combination of the switch hunting and the dark atmosphere with sometimes monochrome drab levels. It can really bore someone."

"None of Hexen's monsters are fun to fight. Ettins are just slow moving damage sponges. Centaurs hold up their shield forever, and the shooting variety don't even have any distinction. Afrits just spam weak fireballs and die easily. Chaos Serpents are literally recycled from Heretic. Dark Bishops just constantly spam their attack even when you can't see them and you have to literally stand there taking it to the face to actually take any damage from it. Reivers are ok but only appear in like one map in the entire game, and they're spammed so hard you get tired of them. Same with Wendigos.";
