As far as I'm aware from friends playing, watching FB groups and YouTube videos about it, you can play pretty much anything. I've seen time-travellers, sword-mages, people in 90's fashion etc.

If you'd like, I can try going with you throughout the process of character creation.

it's subjective what counts as good so there are no one good method but there are several ones which will be only good in specific contexts.

As for me, I either try to get a theme for it or one good motivation. And from then on just work out the "skeleton" of the personality, and flesh it out according to what characters I have close contact it, the rest will be shaped during the game and what is appropriate for the moment to have fun and engage in the story one way or another"

Hers: very neat and regal. His: bit strange.
I don't know what the fuck the english name for a chaperon is but I've always liked those that are turban-like. Majestic.
Red hat is nice, black hat seems a bit frayed, blue hat is nice too.
Quality hats.
His is fantastic, but she, on the other hand, isn't even barely hatted. Scandalous.
Good hat.
Not enough feathers.
His looks comfy, but I'm more intrigued by whatever the heck the two guys on the right are wearing.

for my first LARP, I took a personality quite similar to mine and tweaked it a little bit - just amplifying certain traits and playing down other ones; so for example, I played as someone much more emotionally dependent and clueless than myself, amplifying traits like insecurity, need of validation and blind faith, while playing down stuff like my self-confidence, argumentative nature and preference for solitude. now I'm about to go into a tabletop (where character creation is often relatively similar) as a highly racist battle elf who occasionally gets whispers from something not unlike Cthulhu and is quite strongly considering gaslighting the entire party via abuse of the Awakened Mind mechanic - needless to say I'm not actually a racist telepath who speaks to the Old Ones in real life.

Thank you everyone!
I was also talking to some friends that are more experienced and one of them said that they use larps as a safe space to face fears or issues they may have which seems like a really interesting concept (I'm not talking about deep trauma, more like talking in front of an audience or dealing with rejection.) which I find really interesting and would like to play around with.
At the moment my plan is to continue being "me" but to accentuate some bad aspects of my personality and see how I improve them as the character goes along. For example being snobbish or afraid of being wrong, so my character may be pure blood who thinks they know muggles but confidently gives completely wrong answers in the lessons."

that's a pretty standard thing and everyone does it to some degree either unconsciously or not. It's like training some of your skills, you do it with a game until you get better. Though it's best working with soft skills."

If you are the anon asking for soft kit advice in last thread, sorry for no reply (cut off from internet and forgot).

>- What is needed in a well rounded generic "soft kit"?
Quality/authentic materials and well sized patterns.
>- What are some Helpful Larp DIY channels on youtube?
Use generic sewing class and wood working tips trix etc channels for basic workmanship. Its the same basic skills no matter if its ancient, fantasy or modern.
>- Do you make your own larp weapons/shields? If not were do you get them?
Weapons are expendable so I always buy them. Epic Armoury, Calimacil and Forgotten Dreams are some big names.
>- What are some things you wished you knew when diving into quality Larp?
That good quality garbs doesnt cost much extra but their value is ten times higher in every regard.
>- What type event do you prefer/would recommend for newcomers?
High fantasy larps. Much more room for errors in your kit and roleplaying skills.
>- What have you found works best regarding Full/Multi day Larp events?
If you are going alone or in a small group, dont bother setting up camp in the game zone unless you manage to outfit it to a reasonable living standard. I've seen enough misery endured by people who have tried to survive in small milsurp canvas tents just so that they could sleep inside the zone, only to be beaten back by rain or lack of nutrition since they couldnt cook any food."

Braies, hosen, tunic and linnen coif. For what alle these weird ass words mean look at the Medieval Tailor's Assistant, it'll be your best friend from here on.
This is assuming generic medieval fantasy, before making a costume look at the LARP you're attending and hit up a question in the general Facebook group.

>DIY Channels

>Do you make your own weapons
No, I have friends that make them for me in exchange for clothing. Besides that I get them from secondhand sales and German vendors like
Der Silberwald

And Brits like Light Armouries and Medlock.

>What are some things you wish you knew
Sewing takes time, never try and be quick about it. Talk to people, they want to be talked to as much as you do.
Don't be afraid to ask questions online.

>What type event do you prefer and reccommend?
High quality historically inspired fantasy

>What works best regarding multi day LARPs

>-What is needed in a well rounded generic "soft kit"?
effort, time and money. pick at least two.
>- Where can one get quality gear? (USA)
through the magic of internet. but highly depends on what we call quality. I mean the standard larpshops can work, but for really high end quality stuff you will need custom orders from someone.
>- What are some Helpful Larp DIY channels on youtube?
every kind of DIY channale can be useful. I've never encountered any larp channel so far that was good. Though I am VERY picky about that
>- Do you make your own larp weapons/shields? If not were do you get them?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. If no then either from various shops or friends who are better at making stuff than me.
>- What are some things you wished you knew when diving into quality Larp?
winning lottery numbers.
>- What type event do you prefer/would recommend for newcomers?
Doesn't matter the type of the event. What matter is the player base. Also rulesets that working for you not against you.
>- What have you found works best regarding Full/Multi day Larp events?
Slaves. If you have slaves they can set up your camps, cook your food, etc. Though they are kind of illegal nowdays, but the second best thing is having kids, or so am I told"

If it's your first LARP, you'll probably won't be able to create a character that is totally different from you, unless you have experience at acting or tabletop RPGs.
Take some of your personal character traits as a "skeleton" for your character so it won't feel too alien. With this method you'd be able to create a character which is different from your real self.
And it'd be relatable enough.

It's my personal method which I used for creating characters for several deeply immersive LARPs, focusing mainly on mystery, magic and psychology - which is the kind of games I mainly attend now.

In earlier years I rarely bothered with such thorough character creation, as it rarely mattered in combat-heavy games. Just don your armor, grab your textolite or durasteel blade, drink a bottle or two of vodka, then charge and crush some skulls."

two hooks and you place basically a crossguard on them and between them will lie the blade. Obviously it has the problem that it can jump off from the hooks if you are jumping too much but that's what you get if you want to carry it on your back.
There are other methods but this is the most cost effective and most of the others would be tricky for the reason that your sword have to have a penis head.

magnets might be illegal seeing as they'd be exposed metal, but I'm not certain.

hmm, that could perhaps work; I'm now also thinking of some kind of second attachment point on the side of my leg to keep it from bouncing in front of me, but that's probably unwieldy/unfeasible for fighting.

They are a bit thinner than the regular line of weapons mostly since stronghold and RFB weapons are meant for budget options. The swashbuckler that you posted is one of the better short swords. I've handled them on the battlefield but never owned one though but they hold up pretty well.
Epic armory weapons just need TLC every so often in the form of latex spray and cleaning. I've seen failed EA weapons but I've also seen good blades maintained for almost 5 years."

the two point looks like it could be legit if I got the angle right, yeah. thanks.

>why do you need a big sword then?
advantage as a short person, practicality as I only get to properly skirm at one or two events per year (not enough people at trainings), and I enjoy the versatility immensely - it can be used in a shit ton of configurations (1.5 hander, shield or no shield, dual wield). it works out for me, but I'm also in a place where 3 metre skirmish spears are commonplace so maybe we're just weird over here.

you also make a point on the magnets, though I'd need to tear the sword down a little to install those.

thanks for the ideas, anyway - you've given me a few avenues to consider for certain.

I can see how this could work, as long as I figure out operating it behind my back. cheers."

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==10190505 && dateTime=="06/10/19(Mon)15:07:48" && image=="slings-1.jpg")

My own solution to this was to use the scabbard in a way like a rifle sling and carry it over the shoulder, hilt up of course. I can easily draw the sword, no annoying harness do deal with and if I enter combat then I would throw the scabbard in a bush or a ditch before rushing in, and if I don't expect to have the opportunity to retrieve it later I would just sling it back over my shoulders after drawing it.

I don't like back scabbards and advice against them, they make your character look cheap and childish, if not perverse >>10189902 . If you absolutely want to go that route then at least make your own system, preferably by integrating them in to your armor (like custom fasteners on a gambeson that you can attach the scabbard directly to)."

"So I wanna hear you guys' oppinion on something that's been bothering me for a while.

Two weeks ago, I went to a three day LARP focused on fighting in line battles and war (not so much LARPing in the camps, but still some). It was set in the Warhammer Fantasy universe and my group went as a small unit of Ostlandic Halberdiers.

There were so many other awesome groups, people had awesome costumes, and it was all in all a great time. But there was one group. They were elves. Wood elves, to be specific. They consisted of fat dudes in shitty cheap clothes and one of the fucks had jeans on.
Am I the asshole for thinking: "Don't play a character you can't fit?" Like, elves are nimble, light, fast motherfuckers who snipe people from the trees. Most of these guys would have felled the forest, had they tried to climb a tree.

What is your opinion on playing a character, which you obviously don't "fit", if you get what I mean (not a native English speaker).

in some cases it's a sign of early mental disorder. Or just the symptom of not giving a fuck and/or effort.

That said what doesn't "fit" is tricky because nearly anything can be made to fit. I mean even fat people could get costumes which would make them look elf like, especially in warhammer fantasy. Not easy but possible"

>Where I am from, LARPing has always been about playing on what you see in front of you, not what they have to tell you they are with a hand on their head.
that's all good and dandy, but you don't have to be 140 cm to look like a dwarf.
That is as long as being a dwarf isn't only about being short, which is a boring concept.
There are several different aspects a dwarf can have depending on the setting that makes it a dwarf. height is just one of them. If everything else mostly matches up you can ignore the one or two things that doesn't.
Like, if the guy looks sturdy, have a beard, axes/hammers, maybe shields and some kind of heavier armour, etc.
Same goes for an elf, orc, etc.
You have to find what makes an elf/dwarf/wizard/assassin/whatever into what it is. There will be physical traits that you might won't be able to copy (height for example) some physical traits that can be copied (fake beard, fake ears for examples) and there will be the costume part AND the mannerism which is the actual roleplaying. And there will be a several smaller factors too, but the important thing is these together have to reach the "critical mass" so others could say "yeah thats the X thing you wanted to portray".

Problem is, that line isn't finely defined and also pretty much subjective, so there is that..."

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==10191264 && dateTime=="06/11/19(Tue)11:31:41" && image=="0fa.jpg")

It is impossible to exactly copy fantasy races/creatures features, so its for the best to just ignore differences and appreciate the effort that has been made.

That is, if effort has been made. I don't think twice about a buff but polite barbarian, or a grumpy tall dwarf, but boy do I have to exercise a lot of tolerance for an unwashed fat elf who acts like a dark age peasant and cant run through woods for shit. I'm pretty judgmental against people who cant look or play the role, you need either in my book for it to be ok.

For instance, I played a villager after a foot surgery because I couldn't run or carry any weight and thus couldn't properly rp my mercenary role. Its not that hard to make things look good, its about everyone else's experience and not just your own."

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==10191901 && dateTime=="06/12/19(Wed)04:32:01")

Basically this.
Personally, I'm willing to cut slack to most people, and have seen short, slim orcs and thicc elves which I'm all cool with.

However, personally I do like feeling like I 'look the part' with my characters (which fortunately works well because I have the looks for most archetypes I enjoy playing), and I personally feel that using your appearance to elevate your character does wonders (I have a friend who is a ginger and 1.60-1.65 or so. So he worked out to become like insane buff and learned how to fight with two axes and turned from a sadboi goth to a large ham bro and that made him so much cooler) and it's one of the things I like the most about LARPs is that you can use it to make your traits be affiliated with cool characters. Are you upset since there are no fat 'master swordsmen' on TV? Learn how to fight and be that fat master swordsman! (Which might also help you lose weight). Does it suck that you never get to see short knights? Figure how to make the short knight that is you be awesome and inspiring more than any lanklet around.

Depends on the LARP.
Just don't be a character that will ruin peoples good time with their arc or flaws. Taking a mary sue test is also a good sign. If your larp doesn't have dbad rules or has strong possibility for PvP then it really doesn't matter and you can't fuck up cause even the shittiest characters could play major roles.

Just don't be a dick bag and always be willing to put your character stuff to the side so you can allow other peoples stories to nicely braid into yours."

As someone in the midwest I can say independent Larps are taking a pretty good turn. There seems to be a reactionary movement that includes DBAD rules and keeping even none family Larps from getting too edgy. People here in the midwest are so tired of dystopia rising being full of assholes that just want to win, vampire Larps just being a glorified edgelord orgy, and amtgard not having ANY roleplaying.

I'm a part of an independent non-profit Larp that allows children to play but also somehow calls itself "dark". Has a very black and white mechanic for morality and at the moment staff has been told not to make sympathetic villains which I have completely disregarded. They do this to keep people from constantly making edgy "by any means" fringe heroes. It's a weird situation but it's far better then subjecting myself to dealing with dystopia bros and fuckin weird as vamp kids."

Word of advise: don't take on big self improvement issues. I have GAD that I'm finally medicated for but all my life I assumed people hated me and constantly made fun of me when I wasn't around ... so naturally I played a jester. It went horribly because I had a hard time dealing with the idea of rubbing people the wrong way and was way too concerned with having my character be accepted rather then actually making fart noises at players that assumed they were better than everyone else.

That being said, irl I'm a lot better at speaking up for myself now and finding gentle ways of jabbing at people when they are being down right rude. I never would have gotten to this point if it weren't for having a few panic attacks at larp weekends after players openly said they hate my jester character because it was making their "dark, cool, ambivalent, duplicitous" characters have to try something new."

>soft kit
little to no polyblend fabric. Try sticking with cotton. it's okay to have some elastic bands as long as they are hidden. spend money on good shoes. Cheap leather will shrink when wet causing lots of foot pain and cheap shoes will break apart after 2 events. If you are super poor there is nothing wrong with going to the thrift store and getting some simple scrub pants, an oversized cotton plain tunic from the blouse section, and some trim/extra scrap fabric from the sheet and craft section. No shame in turning a bed sheet into a costume for your first larp when you're poor.
>buying gear
most people like to commission people online but in the US epic armory is everywhere for a reason. They make good latex weapons in wide varieties. their costumes are a little over priced but that's just me. DO NOT by latex weapons on amazon or god forbid wish, they will show up as hard as plastic and separate from the core after awhile. Commission or well established companies are really your best and only bet in the US. If you plan on making your own, prepare for failed attempts and hoarding eva foam like your life depends on it. Do no buy the workout mats with the "metal" textured side. sanding them isn't worth it and it's cheaper to buy eva foam in bulk online. duct tape should be a last resort and not the main building material. Same with pool noodles. study your larps weapon requirements like a bible before crafting.

>recommendations for new people
start on team monster if you aren't 100% on the roleplay or volunteer to play npc's if you aren't nervous about roleplay. it can be an easy way to get accustomed to rules, see the standards for character interaction, and get a feel for the tone of the larp.

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==10196629 && dateTime=="06/18/19(Tue)06:54:25")

I would not recommend buying a set of armor for such a low price.
Not only because the quality is shitty, some armor pieces might actually pose a safety hazard if they do not fight good enough. I recall a guy literally breaking his neck (he recovered) while falling with a cheap steel collar and another breaking a collarbone due to his breastplate.
I recommend starting with a gambeson (there are also quite fancy gambesons available, I recommend taking a look at and a helmet (mytholon has some decent ones which can be really awesome if you redo the padding)."

>Trevor Belmont

With your budget and following the other anon's advice, I'd go for:
-Decent pants
-Decent undershirt
-Any Calimacil one-handed/bastard sword that fits
-A belt if you somehow happen to not have any belt

If you'd wanna splurge further after that, I'd go for these optionals:
-Dagger/Buckler, depending on character's vibe and your own preference
>Vest, if you wanna look fancy and the gambeson gets too hot
Possibly in that order, too.

>Replace the padding
What does that mean and how do you do that?"

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==10196641 && dateTime=="06/18/19(Tue)07:32:25")

Most cheap helmets only have foam strips or a cheap leather/fabric insert that is just held in place by some glue.
The open sallet mytholon is selling has a quite good metal shell but the padding consists of 3 thin foam strips.
If you get hit on the head by accident the foam compresses so much the metal will hit your head.
With sallets and kettle hats you can drill or dremel out the rivets and rivet in a leather strap. You can then sew a new padded liner to the leather band in the helmet. Some kettle helmets and almost all bascinets require you to attach the liner through tons of small holes around the edges.
This is a easy tutorial on how to make a liner and a good beginner project since you can easily do it without a sewing machine. English translation is on the bottom of the page."

Yes, seems to work for a lot of people and has the added benefit that it's easier to clean.
Me personally, I can't stand the look of shitty helmet liners and I prefer the helmet and liner as a single unit "ready to go".
A DIY-liner also helps to distinguish your helmet from others of the same type on bigger events."

Character sheets, skill trees, class specific skills, IG downtime professions/skills. Very RPG like in nature. As for skill based, it really comes down to are you good at fighting an enemy (all weapons,do,single point damage to,draw out fights with skill modifiers added for rp flavor, like crushing,for two,handers which can be blocked, but you have to rp the force of the impact by staggering.) That, and how good are you at being convincing. Its RPG like, but the character skills really only either help you in,battle, or open up world interactions. Nothing wrong with stock ware as long as you combine it with some unique pieces of your costume to make your character look unique. Everything doesn't have to be handmade.

The problem with Mytholon's stock wares though, last time I ordered a jacket from them it smelled of curry sweatshop and I never got that out of it, plus its colors were so deep black it might as well have been sold as all black, top it off it was 30C handwash only for a 100% cotton fabric item. Having half your inventory be sub par quality and the other half rip off tier quality is shamefully sad. Their customer service is also shit and you cant expect your order to be shipped in the first or second week after ordering (maybe continental euros have better service?).

There is always a level lower that you can reach in customer service, but for an internet shop of that size that only imports and ship out simple goods like clothes, leather armors and cutlery, and has access to the German postal infrastructure, I think its a tragedy that it can take them a month to ship out one small package.

Hey, this fag here. I've begun experimenting with mail, and I'm interested in making a complete set for an upcoming faire. Probably wont complete the aventaille before then, but are there any resources to how to make or purchase the attire of an Anglo-Saxon warrior contemporary with my helmet?"

2.5k people at last months event and still growing.

The wiki is fairly comprehensive about the rules and backstory but it's coverage of what, how and why things happen in play is a lot more patchy. What in particular did you want to know?"

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==10220807 && dateTime=="07/13/19(Sat)16:26:10")

A/S re-enactor here. Standard questions are how much historical accuracy do you want and how much are you willing to spend on the project? An 8th or 9thC warrior with a mailleshirt and Coppergate style helm is very well off and would have clothing to match.

The Regia Anglorum website is a goldmine of information on the styles of clothing and equipment in the period and contains links to other resources. The Medieval Tailor's Assistant is a fantastic book with both patterns and general advice on how to make medieval clothing and although it is specifically focused on High and Late medieval fashion there are many patterns such as the shirts and kirtles which are relevant to you. I would recommend scouring etsy for good legwraps or puttees since they are a faff to make.

I'm more than happy to go into detail about anything you wanted help with. If you have the skills, time and material then making a lot of the soft kit is a good idea as the cheap "historical" clothing available online tends to be poor quality and inaccurate while the good stuff is often hideously expensive."

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==10220918 && dateTime=="07/13/19(Sat)19:43:04")

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I was just planning on soft kit that would be a good fit for the helmet that I made, although I intend to finish the helmet with the brass fittings and mail work when I am able to. Ill use the resources you suggested and come back if I need any help."

I'm sorry if that's a lot of questions!

-From what I understand, there are like 4 events a year, like Winter Solstace, Autumn Chaos or whatever they're called. Is there any of them you'd suggest more than the others? What are the differences between them?

-Do people fight more in 'lightest touch' competetive rules, somewhat realistic or 'fantasy fighting' like they have in Drachenfest? Also, how often are big fights, and skirmishes/duels?

-What's the community of it like, and what would you suggest a new/foreign palyer do to be liked by them?

I sware I made this reply two days ago... I had originally missed your reply. I'm already buying all the wooden bowls, dishes, smaller spoons, and any costume appreciate fabric I find at the thrift stores, for me. I'm currently at 7 wooden bowls, 3 spoons, I think I finally have about enough fabric for a couple pieces of clothing, and a 5 piece set of enameled cast iron pots. I would want at least 12 bowls and spoons, before I would think of resaleing them. Besides, if I were to set up a shop at events, I'd need the tent, that I'm trying to save for."

"I'm not sure if this is the place for this but my buddy is trying to write his own fantasy LARP and I think he's putting too much work into the crunch of the game. Like his draft rule book is some 100 pages of rules.

How do I very politely tell him that he's putting way too much effort into this? I see more and more people moving to rules-light games. I just feel like he's setting himself up for disappointment."

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==10225322 && dateTime=="07/20/19(Sat)16:14:20" && image=="larpers.gif")

This is the place, dont worry.

I'm the least tactful when it comes to these things, but I would call him up and address the issue head on. When people look for a new campaign to go to, a heavy rule set can be deterring, either because people dont want to invest themselves to learn everything, or that they get the impression that the organizer focuses more on the game system rather than the game itself.

A complex rule book will also attract the bad crowd of mechanics autists. You know those guys complaining on fb about how two-handed weapons should deal double damage and bean bag magic is immersive? Yup, those are the first guys to show up. And at the same time it will make the larp unattractive to older veterans who, like you mentioned, want to keep things simple and avoid complications with ic/ooc rule fighting.

Also people expect a first time campaign to fail if it tries to hard. Your friend better focus on stuff like grander props, plots, quests and perhaps hiring good NPCs?
I know of a campaign that started recently, and the organizer went out of his way to make it as epic and eventful as possible by using EU funding to hire people to act as NPC where it was needed to fill up on vacant factions. Now he got the ball rolling and has started focusing on expanding his campaign, including the rule book."

>How do I very politely tell him that he's putting way too much effort into this?
here is a pro tip: Write your reasoning however strongly you want and at the very end write the words "You fucking retard"
That will take away the edge of your previous sentences"

if(Anonymous && title=="" && postNumber==10225747 && dateTime=="07/21/19(Sun)07:59:28")

I mean, a 100+ page rulebook is not necessarily bad. I've seen multiple succesful larps have massive rulebooks. If most of it is different skills and abilities, instead of "you need to know ALL the rules", I really don't see what the big issue is.

I'd say: honestly and openly tell him your opinion. If he decides to stick with what he's doing, that's just a difference in creative direction between you two."

if(hungarian LARPfag && title=="" && postNumber==10225752 && dateTime=="07/21/19(Sun)08:22:50")

>I mean, a 100+ page rulebook is not necessarily bad.
Like, there is a mathematical chance of it not suck, but so far every 100+ pages rulebook I've seen was shit, so the chances aren't that good.

>I've seen multiple succesful larps have massive rulebooks.
successful larp doesn't mean the rulebook is good. Shitton of successful larps have bad or outright idiotic rules."
