Post and discuss /diy/ projects, ask questions regarding /diy/ topics and exchange ideas and techniques.

    Please keep in mind:
    - This is a SFW board. No fleshlights or other sex toys.
    - No weapons. That goes to /k/ - Weapons. The workmanship and techniques involved in creating objects which could be used as weapons or the portion of a weapons project that involves them (e.g., forging steel for a blade, machining for gunsmithing, what epoxy can I use to fix my bow) may be discussed in /diy/, but discussing weapon-specific techniques/designs or the actual use of weapons is disallowed. Things such as fixed blade knives or axes are considered tools, things such as swords, guns or explosives are considered weapons.
    - No drugs or drug paraphernalia (See Global Rule 1). If you want to discuss something that could involve such things (e.g., carving a tobacco pipe from wood) that's fine, but make sure it's /diy/ related and doesn't involve drugs or it will result in deletion/ban.

Pic related is a good idea of the worksite. I have the idea to get a metal plate, cut a circular hole with tin snips or similar, and then adhere the plate to the wood (in two cut sections). I am soliciting general technique tips. Haven't had the actual problem for a while but I want the hole plugged up anyway as a further deterrent.

Is the general idea sound? What's a good adhesive to stick a metal plate onto wood? Is there a preferred metal relative to a certain glue? How can I go about cutting/stamping the plate and getting the hole right? The tin snips I have on hand would produce a crude cut on an appropriately thick material, I think.'

If this were 2020, I would have already made an offer without a second thought.
However, due to inflation and interest rates, I'd have to mortgage the property, and my monthly payments would be 50% of my current income. I don't imagine rates are going to come down anytime soon, and I've only seen 2 of these Goldilocks properties pop up in the last 5 years.
In contrast, I already have 70% equity in a suburban house that I have built up myself and have numerous creature-comforts that would take some years to replace. Remaining payments on a cash-out refi are ~9% of my current income.

Planning to build on the west coast, Anchorage Alaska, or in a few options in Russia. Foundations are the most expensive thing to build, so I could take care of that to cover labor costs. I've made a number of bows using various woods before, familiar with the process generally. However, one thing that always stood out to me is the lack of innovation in the field. When it comes to bow construction, the back (ie the side facing way from you) is always under tension. In traditional style composite bows, sinew is used. Carbon fiber has replaced this for obvious reasons.

The issue is that I am completely unaware of anyone looking into what would be an ideal material for the belly of the bow (the side you see facing you). This side is under compression when drawn. Some research suggests that phenolic resin has been used successfully by custom bowyers, but surely there are other materials that would surpass it in compressive strength:weight ratio.

For reference, my goal is to build a manchu style composite bow from modern materials.(Pic rel)'

Naturally, lots of the content I watch often happens to be made by engineers (or engineering students), and seeing them go about making things sometimes makes me wanna kms. You've got a team of 5 dudes making a rc car, each bro i would assume assigned with his own task, trying to calculate every single thing that could possibly be calculated around said rc car before they ever dare to assemble the real thing. Listen I get why the methodology exist and I'm grateful for it, I don't want our buildings or bridges or commercial airliners to be eye balled, but following this workflow whilst trying to create something new is grating to watch. What happened to trying shit out? That's what the OGs did in the early 1900s and it looks a lot more fun than how we're going about it today.';

Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) are how poor-fags (<7f plebs) can design a complex IC and test it out QUICKLY at home.
You could design a fairly complicated IC for a small project and use the FPGA as an ASIC-lite (with a flash-storage PCB) or to use your design to get an actual IC etched yourself or in a group-funded chip print. (Like https://tinytapeout.com/)
The basic process is: HDL -> Yosys -> nextpnr -> FASM.
You can also use vendor software from Xilinx etc, but it is very locked down. I would argue it's more convoluted as well.

    >Open Source Toolchain
    https://f4pga.readthedocs.io/en/latest/getting-started.html
Icestorm - Lattice Ice FPGAs, ice40 is very cheap and lots of dev boards.
Trellis - Lattice ECP5, relatively cheap with more power
X-Ray - Xilinx 7 series, Much more money, but lots of advanced features. Not 100% functionality supported with FOSS.

    >Verilog/VHDL
Both work, Verilog is said to be easier to learn but VHDL is strongly-typed and harder to make shit code with.

String comment = 'My parents have an older house they bought recently that was added onto over the years by prior owners who weren't the most professional. Some hacky stuff was discovered, but up till now the hot water heater had worked fine.

Hot water goes out so they call a contractor, he finds the lower heating element is heavily corroded and says its time for a new tank, parents agree. A few things about the old tank and power setup: It went 2x30Amp circuit breaker -15 feet-> emergency shutoff (see pic) -> tank. While the old tank wasnt heating water it did have voltage running to it. I ran my non contact electrical tester over it and got the beeps. I barely know how to use a multimeter but I managed to find 120/240v on the upper/lower elements. So it had power but wasnt pulling amps.

About the attached pic: No idea what caused it but clearly that black wire on the right overheated and cooked off the insulation. After cutting back the wiring to where good insulation was and attempting to reinstall it I noticed the threads that screw need to go into were stripped or fucked in some way. Re-using that box without replacing the body there is asking for another overheating scenario.

Fast forward and the new tank is installed but it too has voltage but wont pull amps and heat water. I disconnected from that emergency shutoff box and direct wired to the new heater. Still not pulling amps. The breaker hasnt tripped all this time. It's clearly letting voltage through.

I dont know what I need to test here or how to best do it. I have basic hand tools and a multimeter, even if I don't know how to use it to its fullest. Help me /diy/ I dont want my parents to be without hot water over the weekend + however long it takes to find a decent electrician in TN.'

I turned off lights in a room, but I noticed one bulb was glowing red faintly on both ends in the dark. I looked at it, and it was for sure glowing red. So, I tried to unplug it. It wouldn't unplug, and was stuck, and I tried to force it and felt something snap but then thought what the fuck am I doing? I might electrocute myself doing this and stopped trying to force it to unplug. So, I went to the circuit breaker, and found the circuit the lightbulb was on and turned it off. And then, I went to unplug it, and it easily unplugged. It was weird how it just easily unplugged when it wasn't coming out earlier when it was still on.

Can someone explain to me what happened here? The issue is resolved now because I've removed that thing and have no intentions to ever try to use it.'

String comment = 'anons im having trouble selecting ideal transistors for use with an RF amplifier design < 100mhz. It seems that the tradeoffs are just too great- you either have low impedance gain or high impedance gain, and you either have low current and low noise but also poor handling, or high current and higher shot noise. rBB is a big part of this and is rarely documented, because it's usually lower than other noise figures. beta is sometimes very high but this isn't necessarily a good thing. have been reading a bunch of documents

pic related, this shit pisses me off
whether it's nexperia, onsemi, nxp, zetex, or infineon, choices for good transistors designed for HF are limited and most offer shit noise figures or require end users to test tons of models to characterize what the mfg didnt think important

trying to design a loop amplifier based on wellbrook and has:
good linearity from 5nv to 500mV, positive gain from 100khz-10mhz(used a LPF 2nH capacitor for this)
consumes under 100mA(ideally under 30mA) of current, powers off 3-5V bias-T power insert
    really good, low noise figure

have had some good results with phemt but biasing them while keeping self-oscillation down is hard
a few good jfet exist, but the square law behavior is not desirable

learning transistor behavior has been a giant pain in the ass and it feels like nobody designs transistors anymore for HF
its all crap they designed decades ago'

2- make a small frame that would use these mirrors (2x200) since we're not experienced in the telescope making business
3- scale it up to 2x300 or 350mm.

My biggest concern is finding good secondary mirrors, since they'll need to be bigger because lower on the light path.

Any diyer experienced in the field?'

Am I right to assume the thick wire running into the bottom is the controlled load feed? And to switch it over, you'd disconnect that wire, cap the wire, and then run a regular feed wire into it?

Find uses for old urine in this thread. Stories welcome.

    Piss Jug FAQ

    Why use a piss jug?
    >It does WONDERS for my sleep, as opposed to getting up and walking out to the bathroom.

    What is the chemical formula?
    >Human urine consists primarily of water (91% to 96%), with organic solutes including urea, creatinine, uric acid, and trace amounts of enzymes, carbohydrates, hormones, fatty acids, pigments, and mucins, and inorganic ions such as sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), chloride (Cl-), magnesium (Mg2+), calcium (Ca2+), ammonium (NH4+), sulfates (SO42-), and phosphates (e.g., PO43-).

Why does piss have a suffocating odor?
    >When the body breaks down proteins for energy, it releases fixed nitrogen that has to be dealt with. The body turns it into urea and excretes it. Urea and water form an equilibrium reaction with CO2 and ammonia. "CO(NH2)2 + H2O <--> 2NH3 + CO2" Therefore, when urea is dissolved in water it slowly converts to ammonia, giving piss its suffocating odor.

Does piss fertilizer build up heavy metals in the soil?
    >According to one anon, yes. But the study was in China and referencing farmlands that are flooded with sewage. If the heavy metals aren't present in the food or water source, it is fairly unlikely to occur.

Ways to dispose of old piss
    >Turn bath tub facet in cold. Dump each individual bottle into the running water and let it go down the drain.
    OR
    >Dump on the compost pile. Don't allow piss to sit for long periods as it will form amonia.

    Whats the best piss jug?
    >Nalgene Bottle. Milk jugs, tea jugs, gatorade bottle, detergent bottle, folgers coffee container.

    Uses for old piss?
    >Putting nitrogen into compost. Fertilizing Compost. Making Struvite fertilzer. Keeping away animals. Dissolving sticklac (raw shellac with the dye and wax).'

My idea is digging the holes out for the 2x4s, first putting cement in and throwing in some kind of metal seat or holder that I can slip the 2x4s in and out of. They would be tight enough to hold them strong, but wide enough to fit maybe a wedge of some sort to make sure they don't shift while I'm exercising on them.

Is there anyway I can patch up or remedy the hole to at least make it look like nothing happened to it? I was thinking some kind of industrial putty and maybe smoothing over it before repainting.'

From what I read, the straw itself acts itself as an insulator and a surface through which the hardened lime cast forms into solid loadbearing walls around the bale.

Straw itself does not degrade like hay and if done properly it should be next to impossible to set on fire due to the fire-retardant properties of lime plaster'

So a little bit of choppy choppy, some indicating in, and welding, and I have the right length driveshaft and saved myself some coin.

The reason for the thread is once I cut the end off to shorten the tube I found this rolled up cardboard inside. What is the reasoning for this? Is it supposed to help dampen harmonic resonance or was it in there for some other reason? I have shortened several driveshafts and this is the first time I have ever encountered rolled up cardboard in the tube.

I ended up with about 0.07 thousandths of runout at the end. Had do do some tacking, then indicating, cut a tack, tap it in, re-indicate, etc. for a bit to get er all nice and true, but it runs smooth as silk at 70 down the highway now, whereas before it was bad at 20mph. The old center ball on the double cardan was completely wallered out and even the splines on the slip yoke were getting worn and sloppy.'
