Speed was set too high. Cutter got hot, then got dull. Dull cutter stopped cutting and started rubbing, turning the motor's output power into heat. This is one of those things like submerging a running car. You need to look. It could be you only need to dry everything out or you might have gotten water in the cylinder and really fucked the engine.

In this case it didn't stop spinning in an unusual way so I imagine the worst damage was avoided. The stepper motors that control the cutter could still be out of whack or the stock could have gotten so hot it welded to the lathe.

Judging by the housing for the lathe the shape it's in I imagine these guys make stupid mistakes a lot."
