"Dental hygiene is incredibly important, and not enough people take it seriously. I've never had a cavity in my life. Neither did my father, or my grandfather. This might just be lucky genetics, but I remember that in middle school and high school, nearly everyone else I knew had at least a couple fillings. I blame the following:
>Too much sugar. Especially in children's food. It's a big problem that people aren't aware of.
>Not brushing teeth. If you ask, an alarmingly large number of people confess to skipping the toothbrush occasionally.
>Incorrect form when brushing teeth. If you see the average person brush their teeth, they don't take enough time and they don't only do the sides. You need to get the caps of the teeth but people only do the sides.
In the future, maybe we can coat our teeth in a perfect transparent sealant, and surpass nature's craftsmanship. Until then, you need to take care of your teeth."

Truth.
>If you ask an alarmingly large number of people confess to skipping the toothbrush occasionally
Id never publicly admit it, but any idiot would know this by looking in my mouth. This is no longer the case and now I brush twice, sometimes three times a day and floss/mouthwash at night. Recently I've stopped the mouthwash because someone mentioned its actually worse to use this, but I'm not sure. But the damage has been done. I went weeks at a time without brushing for literal years. Id rinse with some mouthwash sometimes, brush when I felt like I'd strive for self improvement for a day then fall right back into it again. I was worthless shit about this.
Fast forward, I'm now in my late twenties. I'm missing 2 teeth, and a 3rd is barely still hanging on. Its loose and I feel like biting something the wrong way is going to basically push it over the edge. It terrifies me because I feel like once thats gone my jaw is going to sit really fucked.
I never had much money, and never had a job that offered dental until recently. My insurance for dental just kicked in as of this month. I moved in with my parents specifically to save money to fix this issue without much other monetary responsibilities. I told them I was in a financial bind and that I needed time to save up money, so even they don't really know. I'm searching for a dentist who can help me with implants, but I feel so inept and now completely terrified of the dentist that I'm not really sure where to start.
The ONLY positive thing in this shit is that all this visible damage is in the back of my mouth. Not a person around me knows whats going on with this or can even see it unless I opened up and showed them, which I never will. My smile looks normal, and thats the only good thing I can say."

Not strictly true. Bacteria cleave the sucrose in food to glucose and fructose. The fructose they ferment for energy. The glucose they metabolise to dextran (what plaque is primarily composed of). The process of converting glucose to dextran produces acid as a byproduct which degrades enamel. These are the bacteria responsible for tooth decay. There are indeed plenty of other bacteria in the that don't need carbohydrates to survive, but these aren't the ones causing much harm."

>Why is dental hygiene very important for overall good health
Poor dental hygiene will lead to infections in the gums, that can, in turn, lead to the infection spreading and blood poisoning.
Furthermore, as quite a lot of stuff will enter your body through your mouth, healthy saliva is what your body uses to kill off several types of bacteria, and fungus spores.
Lack of said quality saliva, combined with sores in your mouth...
images.google that shit if you want, I've had my share.
Also; poor dental hygiene can lead to tooth-aches which will make you grumpy, and possibly ruin your social life

We are in a very similar age. Mind me asking what sort of money you make / hourly rate? I figured its not salary as most salaried jobs have insurance you could get on.
Honestly man, you need that shit fixed asap. Don't be me. I'm being VERY optimistic when I'm pray to god 3 implants will be good enough and I can root canal the other 2. Don't go through that shit. I've been saving like a fiend because its also going to cost a fucking fortune, and honestly probably a heal time I don't even wanna think about.
>I consider my family member's heart murmur more important than my dental issues.
Thats a valid point. But something to keep in mind is you gotta help yourself too man. Server dental issues can cause more than an ugly face and issues eating tasty food. Infections, abscesses, etc can cause some issues in major ways that are actually quite dangerous. I consider myself extremely fucking lucky I haven't had any issues like that, because god fucking knows I really should have.
If you have a kind and willing family, I would seriously think about moving in with them if it helps you save a bunch of money. Open another savings account at your bank, and have a significant portion of your paycheck go into that account. Maybe what you were paying for rent in its entirety. That way your budget mostly stays the same, you can keep helping your family, etc. It will add up quickly. Also see if your bank has any other money savings options for you (credit cards with cash back, etc. Gotta be responsible about that shit though, and don't let the bank upsell you on shit that would end up not helping you after all)"

"Everyone should be doing the following things every DAY for dental health: brush, rinse, floss. Brushing and rinsing preferably twice per day, once in the morning and once before bed.

When flossing, get as deep into the gums as possible and pull up against the teeth. You're trying to free any lodged food in the gums and scrape soft plaque from the teeth.

Invest in an electric spin brush. It makes a huge difference and saves time and energy brushing. Your dentist will confirm it makes a difference on your next visit.

Listerine is the best brand of mouthwash. Others work but it's the best (no I'm not a shill).

Poor dental hygiene can cause stomach problems from excess bacteria going down the esophagus. Not flossing or brushing will guarantee bad breath.

Much of the health industry is a scam but dental generally is not. X-rays aren't needed every time but once a year is smart. The fluoride surface treatment is a meme and it shouldn't be in water. That said, daily habitual dental maintenance is a no brainer. It costs viritually nothing and can save you thousands in future healthcare expenses and quality of life.

.t someone who neglected their teeth, had multiple cavities and minor gingevitus. I used to brush once a day, never floss, never rinse and eat sweets before bed. Since changing my habits, stomach problems went away and i haven't had a cavity since.

The dentist will be able to tell you how fucked your gums are by doing a depth test."

Just for general oral hygiene?

Brush with an oral B oscillating head tooth brush. sonicare works fine but the oscillating movement basically sweeps in a more favorable direction along the gumline whereas the sonicare ones go side to side and sweep perpendicular to the gumline. small head is better, let the brush do the work just rest it on the tooth at the gumline at a 45 degree angle. the main goal of brushing is sweeping the plaque off at the junction of the tooth and gums.

floss at night, "hug" the tooth then you floss, use tom's of maine or some unwaxed floss to better remove plaque bc the slippery ones are easier yeah but don't work as well. something is better than nothing.

use fluoride toothpaste and an OTC fluoride rinse if you think you're at a higher risk

limit snacking, or if you must, rinse with water after at the very least. the constantly acidic environment is the real killer

waterpiks aren't bad but i mean i'm a dentist and wouldn't even waste my money on one.

go in for cleanings if your mouth isn't in the best shape to start with bc you won't be able to remove calculus at home

if you have dry mouth, use a dry mouth rinse before bed or there are these little lozenges you can stick on your gums that release xylitol and helps maintain salivary flow throughout the night

don't do any of the bs like oil pulling, charcoal toothpaste, whatever else is out there. at the very best it isn't doing any good.

oh yeah actually replace the toothbrush heads once in a while too. they wear down. no it isnt a gimmick to get you to spend more money.

there are other manual toothbrushes that work great for cleaning under the gumline. look up nimbus toothbrushes. or any kind that has extra fine projections extending beyond the thicker bristles. they're about 3mm long usually and you can see them sliding under your gums when you brush properly"

also if you floss and it bleeds don't be a dingus and stop because it's painful. if you have a splinter in your toe and it hurts when you try to take it out, do you just leave it? no you take it out and the inflammation subsides and then the problem resolves itself. same with the gums. if they're inflamed it'll definitely be a bitch to floss and even brush (i experience this when i travel for even just a week and use some shitty hotel toothbrush)

but keep at it and the bleeding will subside unless you have more severe problems like calculus deeper below the gumline that can only be removed during scaling and root planing by the dentist"

That’s common, but once you get by that contact it should open up at least enough to fit floss through. "Victims excavated from the ruins of Pompeii (those holes they filled with plaster where their skeletal remains stayed) were put under CAT- scanners and showed that they all had nearly perfect dental health.

>"New research has revealed that despite rudimentary dental care, ancient Romans had better teeth than people today.

>Scientists used CAT scans to examine the remains of 30 men, women and children who were killed in Pompeii when the city was engulfed by ash and pumice from Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. After months of research, their most startling discovery was the excellent condition of the Romans’ teeth, which the researchers ascribed to a low-sugar, fiber-rich Mediterranean diet.

>“The inhabitants of Pompeii ate a lot of fruit and vegetables but very little sugar,” said Elisa Vanacore, a dental expert. “They ate better than we did and have really good teeth. Studying their teeth could reveal a lot more about their lives.”

Aside from flossing, your top priority should be to drastically cut your sugar intake if you want to save your teeth"

Now let's go further from the coast where Pompeii was and enter the city of Rome with all it's wealth, poverty and degeneracy and all that fast food you find in every big city.

>Common people in ancient Rome ate millet, a grain looked down upon by the wealthy as fit only for livestock, according to a new study published in the March issue of the Journal of Anthropological Archaeology. And consumption of millet may have been linked to overall social status, with relatively poorer suburbanites eating more of the grain than did wealthier city dwellers

>Health studies out last week heralded the modern Mediterranean diet, rich in olive oil, fish and nuts, as a good way to avoid heart disease. In ancient Rome, however, diet varied based on social class and where a person lived

>Compared with people living on the coasts, for example, the Romans ate less fish.

>There were also differences among people living within Rome. Individuals buried in the mausoleum at Casa Bertone (a relatively high-class spot, at least for commoners), ate less millet than those buried in the simple cemetery surrounding Casa Bertone's mausoleum. Meanwhile, those buried in the farther-flung Castellaccio Europarco cemetery ate more millet than anyone at Casa Bertone, suggesting they were less well-off than those living closer to or within the city walls."

Denistry is not fucking jewish pseudo-science lol.

Orthodontistry absolutely is though. there have been countless studies and Orthodontists that have studies the causes of malocclusions, but they are all shot down by the Orthodontic Society, because after all, if people figured out what causes malocclusions and how to prevent them effectively, we'd no longer get money by pulling teeth, applying braces, and performing plastic surgeries on faces that weren't grown properly.

Modern orthodontistry has absolutely zero interest in seeing their patients face develop properly, because most people don't understand that it's not genetics fucking fault that your teeth are crooked as fuck,it's due to your palate not being wide enough, which is caused by improper oral posture or soft diets that don't train the facial muscles properly, resulting in mouthbreathing, not closing your mouth at night, etc.

I hope we look back at modern orthodontics in 10 years and cringe at how many teeth were pulled. Having to wear retainers for the rest of your life to keep your teeth straight, seems absolutely genetic doesn't it? FUcking christ. How the fuck would we survive if half the human species had crooked as fuck teeth? So if you get implants, the total of everything together would be 10k?
Thats actually much cheaper than I thought. Is that with insurance or without?
I moved back in with parents to save for this. I have more than that now, and my insurance started as of this year so I'd like to get a move on things.

How long was the recovery time after the pull and graft? I do have an out of country trip around May, and I'd rather not be fucked up for that.
Was it done in one sitting, or multiple visits?

>You can barely see the gap for the last one when I smile
A real fucking gift right there mate.
Mine are all not visible when I smile, I have to really expose my mouth for people to see.
That said, I'm not so lucky in my placement as you.
All of mine are on my lower set of teeth. Back right and back left.
Missing my middle molar on the right side, back left molar, and soon to be middle left molar. Both front molars have damage as well. Its become very difficult to eat as of the past 2 weeks because some more damage has finally shown itself after a long silence of almost nothing changing. Guess it couldn't last forever.
I could post a pic I took back in Dec, though more damage has occurred since."

Also dentistry is also half jew pseudoscience but I think most people are just clueless not malicious.
Cavities can also be prevented with diet and just a bit of oil pulling. I had a ton of cavities growing up, even with perfect tooth care. At 17 I switched to mostly lowcarb with absolutely no sugars, few fruits and very few starches and cavities I had in progress disappeared and all my sensitivities went away, some of which I had had for 5+ years. The dentist looked in my mouth and was like “wow, he has 2 that need to be filled!”

I didn’t connect the dots until I was older but the procedure was 95% him drilling into my teeth to make a hole, 5% him filling the hole he just made.

How helpless are you? Literally just call them and say "Are you covered by X insurance company and if so can I schedule a consultation?" Use them to figure out what's wrong with you, and have them contact your insurance company to determine what procedures you can have done."

I'm 28 and no cavities.

Every time i go in for a cleaning the doctor gets the xrays in and tells me i have two cavities starting to form on the exact same tooth on both sides and immediately try to schedule a drill and fill without asking me if i even want to. I always decline. First time they told me that was age 20. Every time since ots the same story and they never get worse.

I feel that so long as you brush every few days at least or after a particularly sugary or stringy meal youre good unless your genetics are fucked. I have a hard time believing we need mostmof modern.dentistry when we're still finding skulls from thousands of years ago with perfect teeth."

Thats true, but thousands of years ago, people didn't have the levels of sugar in their food and drink that we do now.
I'm the same age as you anon.
I was JUST like you as well with my dental habits, except I didn't even go in for cleanings. I ate wicked amounts of sugar from the ages of 22-26 too. I'm missing 3 teeth now.
I've since heavily cut back on sweets, and drink next to no soda. Soda used to be all I drank too.
I hate whats happened to me, and I can barely eat like I used to. I really think you should reconsider.
Though maybe you eat much less sugar than I did. I'm no dentist, but I don't see the harm in playing on the safe side with it."

"Just had genuine trouble eating a meal for the first time in my life, and stumble on this thread.

What the fuck do I do at this point? I have a tooth hanging on by a thread on my left side, and a exposed root on my right. I can't eat on either side. Eating with the front of my mouth, and trying to not accidentally pushing something back out of habit as I might either feel extreme pain on the right or rip my damn tooth out on the left, whats left of it anyway.
I know I'm a gross disgusting asshole who never took care of his dental health because he was literally too stupid and stubborn to realize how important it was till its too late.
But how do I stop this and fix what I can? I don't want an ugly toothless smile, a misaligned jaw, or the inability to eat solid fucking foods.
Part of me thinks if I just rip this fucking thing out, I'll at least have a little more use of my mouth than I do now, but then I'm also afraid of infection."

Brushing only helps preventing it, faggot. It's not a guarantee. Genetic factors can cause cavities to form in people that do everything absolutely right their entire life."

>Dental hygiene is more than half genetics
This. I basically didn't brush my teeth until I was 11, and even then I only did it about half the time. When I was 16 or so, I'd brush my teeth every time I left the house, which was 3 times somedays and 0 times other days. Now I brush once a day. Never any cavities, never any concerns with the dentist.

I have wisdom teeth that they want to extract but fuck that they said they're growing in straight. Every time I go they mention that they want to take them out, but I tell them that I don't want surgery unless the wisdom teeth are fucking my shit up."

You get the extraction and the implants done separately. The grafts were done in the same visit though. The recovery time after the extractions were never bad. If my extractions were not on Fridays I would go to work the next day. I ate soft food for about a week.

From what my oral surgeon told me, the implant process takes time. You get the post, heal up, get the abutment, heal up, and get the crown.

I pulled up my treatment plans again from 2017 and it looks like each implant would be $3000 at the cheapest. My full total is more like $13k or 14k. This is out of pocket.

My insurance covers implants at 50% but only once every 84 months. Max costs per year are $2k. Insurance is more willing to help out with preventive care and fillings but it's better than nothing.

I'm glad yours aren't visible and I wish you luck with your molars. It sucks not being able to chew like you used to.... I mostly chew with my left side now."
