--------------------------------------------
Greetings, unusual summons, and welcome back to Magical Girl For Hire Quest! Currently, you're on a mission as a kid's summons to help him pass his final exam so that he can become a full summoner. You're currently known as Kyria, a triple eyed, fairy-like summon constantly expounding magical energy, and after spending a very curious day out at the circus on his day off (with you getting some interesting objects as a result) you find yourself in the position of waiting for your client to awaken.

It’s nothing major- simply seems like you’ve awoken an hour or so before his usual time. Meaning that you’ve got a bit of spare time to do as you like. The sun is just cresting over the horizon, from the looks of things. You could take this time to do a bit of study yourself, or maybe take a look around the campus, see if anyone has news to share. Or get the both of you up early, maybe get Lysan into the habit of morning warmups.

More of the quest. Problem is, I don't want to pay you to put your other hobbies and free time on hold to please me and a couple of others. I would never let anyone aside from my boss use money to tell me what to do, in my spare time no less.
Like, how much patreon bux do you need to decide it's worth shuffling around your schedule or saying no to your friends because strangers pay you to entertain them? I don't know you or how motivated you are by money but once it enters the equation, so does stress. It's real easy to burn out our give up because you feel like you're not receiving enough for what you do.
Oh and for everyone's sake, please don't answer these questions.

I guess that makes it some kind of ethical issue for me? I could spot you a few dollars in a tip jar but setting up a monthly payment? Nah. That gives me the right to expect certain things from you, in time, quantity and quality and suddenly we're having a business exchange and not simply playing a game together. That's a disaster waiting to happen.

I think it's similar to the paid GM debates you see on the virtual tabletop forums, and that's one hot potato"

There was also this:
>Something’s bugging you about it, though...as you turn the book end over end, you can’t help but squint...it feels like something might be inside of it- if only because it feels like the back cover might be heavier than the front. You’re not certain, but…"

You decide that going back to To Rend the Beyond would probably be the most beneficial for you in the long run. The information on just what it takes to summon a creature and how to manipulate it...you don’t think it’ll be incredibly useful, but you never know where insight might come from. If nothing else, it might prove to be just what’s needed for the test.

There’s a lot to go over here, however. The basics state that the plane is that the dimensional plane where summons come from is a nexus of raw mana call The Stream, so named because it is theorized to be a continually moving source- you’re reminded of the leyline style of magic sources that you often come across, only instead of smaller streams, it seems like this might just be one big river that constantly changes shape and direction.

Summons themselves are essentially souls that have found their way to the Stream, and tend to retain facets of their past personality, but only the strongest retain their memories of who they were before they became summons. The idea disturbs you a bit, you won’t lie, but...you guess you can deal with it.

Summons are basically done by the summoner casting a minute portion of themselves into the Stream, and waiting for a summon to be interested by it. Kind of like using bait to attract a fish, you think. It’s why some summons can be belligerent- there’s nothing technically forcing their obedience; rather it’s simply that most relish the chance to be in the real world again. It’s also why it’s uncommon for people to summon the same summon twice in a row. For that, you’d need both something that the specific summon is interested in, and a way to attempt to notify that soul directly- which is relatively unique for every single summon. Summons made in this way are called ‘Binding Summons’; since they are attracted by something they desire innately, the summon is ‘bound’ to the summoner, the remaining core of their being willing to do anything until they can have the thing- which is often never.

Hmm…wonder what else you can find out.

Might as well take a look into just what these Bonds were. You had a vague idea, but they seemed to be important, nonetheless, and different from Binding. As you flip across the pages, you get an inkling of an idea. If you look at it a certain way, this all kind of makes you wonder if you could do something vaguely similar to Lorelei’s clone thing or Izumi’s weapon shaping...only maybe with calling other people. Something like a temporary summon, perhaps? What’s the term...puppets? Not sure. Well, it’s an idea, nothing major. Maybe you’ll talk about it more later.

Aha, there, Bonds. Seems like Bonds are essentially the link between Summons and Summoners, and the strength of the bond is essentially how much mana that the Summoner can feed the Summon consistently. They need this flow to perform most of their skills, it seems, and is usually invisible to the naked eye. However, it can be measured, and seen if the bond is strong enough. Bonds require the summoner and summon to be mentally and emotionally synchronized to a degree; they say the reasons are ‘currently unknown’ in the book, but the more they understand each other, the stronger the Summon is. So friendly summons and summoners will have a stronger bond and can thus access more of their power than summons that are frosty to each other. Bonds also serve a more tactile purpose as they can allow a summoner to know just how damaged their summon is, and other functions mentally.

Huh. Wonder what that would make you.

As you continue reading about the various levels of Bonds and how they work (and how the higher level bonds- which are stated to be ‘only that which a relationship like a dedicated lover can reach’) you hear a groaning from the bed. Seems like Lysan is up. You flip the book closed, hearing a subtle rattle. Oh yeah! There WAS something in the back, wasn’t there? You check the back cover at Lysan swings his feet over, and poke a small hole where you’re sure the sound comes from. Inside...is a strange ring. A gold band, with an inlaid gem. Red, with a stripe of yellow running down the center of it- a variant of cat’s eye, if you recall the term right. You touch it, and interestingly enough you can see the thing glow subtly as soon as you do...you think something might’ve fluctuated, but you’re genuinely unsure. Other than that, however, nothing happens.

“Huh? Whatcha lookin’ at?” Lysan asks sleepily, still rubbing out his eyes.

>”Just catching up on some reading.” Pocket the ring. It’s technically your book, so the ring is yours, too.
>”Well, a couple of things, but at the moment, this.” Show him the ring. It couldn’t hurt...hopefully.

You shake your head. “Just catching up on some reading.” As you subtly pocket the ring and close the book, you move to casually get up. No reason to make him suspect anything’s off. It’s yours, he doesn’t need to worry about it. You’ll give it a scan in a bit. “Had a good night?”

He nods. “Yeah, sleep helped a lot. I just hope the test won’t be too bad, but...I think I can handle it. Whatever it is.” He grumbles out the last part, and you can frankly understand why. Not knowing what exactly the tests will be on gets rather old rather fast. “You ready for the day?”

“As ever,” you announce, and he nods, headed to freshen up. As you do, you’re quick to scan the little ring.

>Created: Estimated 250 Years (Local) Ago
>Apparent Function: Mana Construct Container. Readings indicate current object holds mana construct entity. Release method unknown.

...what. Your heartbeat quickens as you read the simple and clear wording. There’s something IN there? What...who?

Before you can gawk too much, the door opens, and steam billows out as Lysan dries off his hair. You’re quick to put both the ring and the FutureSight away before he turns to you properly. “Alright...let’s do this!”

Yeah, here’s hoping.

It doesn’t take you very long to get to the usual place- by now everyone seems to at least be somewhat used to your presence, even if many are still giving you cautious stares. Ms. Tandal is there as usual, and this time you can see a very small, nearly translucent crow on her shoulder. “Greetings, and I hope you all had a restful day off. Now we resume testing, and today’s will be the Test of Mind. Unlike the Test of Sync, which judged the bonds between Summon and Summoner, the Test of Mind judges the Summoner’s general knowledge of the pact between Summon and Summoner, as well as their logical thinking capabilities, along with the Summon’s capacity to respond to those judgements in a timely and concise manner. Any questions?”

Several hands go up. Hell, you’re tempted to ask yourself.

Miss Tandal blinks once, then sighs. “It is a ‘call and response’ manner of test. A hypothetical will be given, then the summoner and summon shall both answer what they believe is the best option. Occasionally, minor demonstrations may be requested. NOW are there any questions?”

>Any questions?"

Thinking about it, you’ve got nothing to lose, and to the surprise of many, your hand goes up. “What’s to stop us from just agreeing with a plan and showing how it works?” You ask. “That doesn’t seem like much of a test.”

Miss Tandal looks at you in slight surprise before a small smile of all things shows on her face. “That would be true, were this a simple test for a grade, where there is a collection of correct and incorrect answers. However! This will not be graded, but judged by a collective of experienced individuals, as I would have stated at this point regardless.” She nods in understand of your question as she claps twice. “Take a seat, and as soon as the other judges get here, we’ll begin.”

“HEY! MADE IT!” A familiarly loud voice yells. Aside from Proctor Lucia, you notice that another lady, with long, platinum blond hair down to her knees and a thin, supermodel-esque figure stands next to her, at least a head and a half taller. Two men are right behind her- one tanned, buzzcut, and with a face long scarred by what you think are burns on the right side. His eyes are calm, but flinty, and you can tell he’s seen battle before, interestingly enough- his eyes scan the room, locking onto you for a couple moments, and his neutral expression dips into a frown briefly before restoring itself. His stocky build is sure of itself, and you can see muscular arms that belie the strength that his slight belly seems to mask. The last fellow is a slightly older man, the wrinkles of age just starting to show, but his salt and pepper hair is still full, and he seems jovial at the whole situation, as though he wants to break out into a laugh at any moment. None of them have summons with them at the moment.

“Well, speak of. Class, you should recognize proctor Lucia, but along with them are Instructor Vanita, Namui, and Cordin,” she mentions all the individuals in turn. “They, along with myself, will be the five judges for this Test. We will all ask a single question, so do your best to answer as ably as possible. Now, as I said. The test begins.”

There’s a real undercurrent of nervousness at this point as kids and summons go up- it’s simply 5 adults sitting at a table, while the summoner and the summon sit facing each other. One by one they’re grilled on ‘What would you do if...’ and ‘considering this law, how would you approach this situation?’ type questions. At times, the students are told to get up out the chair, and then ‘If you would, demonstrate for us an example of your actions under the following circumstances…’ That was unique, because then the crow on Tandal’s shoulder would caw, and there would be some sort of minor, glowing illusion that they’d have to interact with.

It seemed like the crow was smarter than it looked, its wings moving in unnatural ways for a normal bird- and you swear it outright CHUCKLED at some of the responses or demonstrations.

It’s as you’re musing over the judges that you finally hear it. “Summoner Lysan and Summon Kyria. Step forth, please.” Lysan takes a deep breath, looking towards you briefly before you both step up, and take your seats.

So far, you’ve noticed a vague pattern with at least some of them. Lucia, the Clarity test proctor, seems to appreciate answers that lean more towards protectionism and heroics. Vanita, the modelesque woman, seems to value simple practicality, but you’ve seen her grimace at some of the more brutal solutions. Namui, the large fellow, seems to appreciate no-nonsense behavior as well, but also planning and by the book tactics. Cordin, the older man, seems to value unorthodox tactics, however, and occasionally laughs at some of the bolder thoughts put forth.
Tandal is a stone face the entire time- you THINK you’ve caught her mouth twitching a few times in regards to any plan that seems timid, but you’re honestly unsure. Regardless, they always seem to take only a few seconds to deliberate quietly after all the answers have been given, Tandal giving a final ‘Acceptable’ or ‘Unacceptable’ along with a quick review why before sending them on their way. There were eleven before you went up.

Six of them (Iris included, it seems) were found Acceptable. You think you’ve found the test most people are going to fail at…

“I’ll take the first question,” Vanitas says, to approving nods. “Let us presume there was a situation in which an individual is requesting a nearby summoner’s aid- you- due to an altercation which involves a government official. This government official has not admitted to any guilt or wrongdoing, however, he has brought forth his state-granted summon to defend himself. The individual has not physically harmed the official, but he HAS threatened him. However, the summon has physically begun to approach the individual beyond reasonable distance and has stated his intention to incapacitate the individual so as to remove the potential threat. There are no nearby guards. How would you resolve the issue, if you choose to interfere at all?”

Lysan hmms at the question- you have to admit it’s a dicey one. “I suppose what I would do is try to keep them both from hurting each other, really. Try to get Kyria in between the both of them and see if there’s anyone else I can call for help to resolve it? It’s a government official, so it’s illegal to try and restrain them since I’m not authorized, but you said beyond reasonable distance, which means that the aggressor is the summon...so yeah, I’d just try to keep things in a holding pattern.”

Blinking once, Vantia turns to you. “And you, Kyria? How would you interpret those orders, or would you suggest an alternative course of action?”

>Given the scenario above, how would you choose to resolve the issue?"

You have to think about the situation. Lysan mentioned that you couldn't simply restrain the official fellow- but the summon might be fair game. So in that case...

You find yourself falling back into your usual mercenary habits before you know it. “I would...likely place myself between the summon and the individual, and use my talents at the creation of barriers to impede the summon's progress.”

There’s a couple of surprised looks at you for that one, Lysan included- ah, right. You’d been hiding precisely what you could do for some time. Although, you get the feeling they were expecting something else...regardless, you continue. “At the same time, I would place a spherical barrier around the individual to prevent harm to them, as well as to prevent them from being able to harm the official. This would have the result of making any threats that the individual had uttered to be moot, eliminating the threat that the individual poses to the official; I would be sure to state as such to the summon in order to attempt to have the summon stand down from it's aggressively defensive posture.” There. That sounds like a pretty safe way of handling the situation.

Vantia blinks once, her eyes wide, before nodding. “Very well. Thank you for your answer. Next?”

Cordin snorts, a wry grin on his face. “I’ll go,” he says unceremoniously. “Alright, say you’ve gotten on at a major...hmmm...let’s say you made it into a major guild. Officially recognized and everything. You’re in...let’s say you’re headed for a day out, perhaps catch a game. You’re in the arena, everything’s looking good...and then!” He slaps his hand. “Suddenly, yells, shouting- something’s exploded, caught fire! The guard are there trying to get everyone evacuated, but you spy someone suspicious at the top of the stairs, in the VIP booth. You’re positive they had something to do with it, because they turn and run the second you make eye contact. Whaddya do?”

Lysan grimaces at this one. “Ah...I mean...well, part of me would want to go after him, of course...but I think I’d want to focus more on getting everyone out safely. I think the best option would be to go to the nearest guard, offer our services to them, then tell the guard about what I saw later once everyone was evacuated.”

“Hm. And your take on things, Kyria? Any wisdom to offer, or suggestions?” Cordin asks.

I think these are those trick first aid questions intended to provoke action and the correct answer is to not act unsafely.
Lysan got H.I.S., Heroic Impulse Syndrome heroic idiot stupidity and sent us away. Remember the two laws of escort quests.
1. The escortee is an idiot and wrong because they trusted a PC.
2. Never leave the escortee alone they will die to an angry squirrel.

Hm. Thinking about it, you can understand his reluctance to interfere, but as you begin to speak, something occurs to you that makes you hold your words. “Hmmm…”

Cordin leans forward a bit, slight grin and eyes curious. “Yeah?”

“I think…” you start slowly, “...that I would disagree with that course of action.”

Lysan looks surprised, and Cordin and the rest show varying amount of curiosity. It’s Cordin who speaks, however. “Oho? And why’s that?”

“Well, we aren’t versed in the guard's evacuation plan, are we?” you ask retorically. “I think we'd be more of a hindrance than a help in trying to direct traffic flow. My suggestion would be to go after him. Especially since, well…it sounds like a distraction. The attack seems too well-planned.” Your eyes are closed as you imagine the situation. “I’d say that the noise and chaos are a distraction. The man is obviously using it in attempt to cause instability. Why? I’m not sure; I’d say because he wanted to reach a high valuable target- possibly for assassination. Especially if he was in the VIP room.” You nod, feeling a bit more sure of your summations after you audibly sound them out. “I would suggest Lysan and myself pursue the suspect. It also has the benefit of potentially getting my summoner out of the areas with fire, explosives, and crowd panic. I would be able to better keep an eye on him and defend his person if the individuals I had to pay attention to were reduced. Perhaps encase him in a protective sphere if needed.”

Cordin guffaws at that, and even Lucia gives a snicker, although Vanitas seems entirely unimpressed, and Namui visibly frowns. Tandal, of course, reminds entirely impassive.
“Well, then! Alright, sure. That’s it from me.”

“Then allow me,” Namui speaks up. His voice is rough. “Hmmm now...what- ah. Alright.” His voice raises a bit as you both pay attention.

“There’s been a situation. Let’s say you have been sent out to investigate a valuable trading caravan that should’ve made it to the city by now. You find much of the caravan sinking in a nearby swamp, and no individuals remain. You can tell they were beset by thieves, as you can clearly see that a number of the villains even now are making away with many of the valuable goods that would’ve gone to the people."

He leans forward, as though trying to menace you both. “Tell me, what would be your decision on how to handle the situation?”

Deja vu...with some slight differences.

Lysan grimaces, but his face is resolute. "I...I'm not sure. I think I'd want to pursue the thieves, 'cause Kyria's strong...but then again, there might be some stuff left in the caravan that'd sink if we didn't get it...I think we'd go after the thieves, though. We've got the right to arrest if they're criminals, after all, and I trust Kyria to keep me safe. We arrest the thieves and recover what we can."

He nods. "Mm. And Kyria, then?"

>How would you elect to solve the issue?"

Wait. We can SEE the thieves?

Haha. Capture the thieves and force them to rescue the sinking goods. Strike at their leaders and take them captive if they try to scatter.

At the very least, if we can capture the leader and drive off the rest then we can still rescue the goods while also disrupting the thieves and we can torture the information about their organization, how they transport store and fence the goods etc

Ultimately itself the choice between saving this Caravan, or saving future Caravans AND lives by destroying the thieves, so I would prioritize capturing the leader above all else.

If we have to make a choice and have to write one or the other off, then it would be better to merely trail the thieves until we find their base or have the opportunity to get reinforcements.

It's not our job to fight them. Information should be enough. But we would if there was sufficient benefit."

It’s not long to answer this one. “Truthfully, I’d agree with Lysan on this one. I'd also go for the thieves.” You can see a grin come from Lysan as you explain it. “After all, the goods in the swamp can be recovered later on, especially if they’re metals and the like. Compared to what the thieves theoretically got, its worthless, isn’t it? I mean, you mentioned that the goods that we can glimpse on the thieves are noticeably valuable, correct? Either way, they’ll be going slower due to having to haul their ill gotten cargo- easy prey. I don’t doubt we could eliminate the thieves, recover the goods, and perhaps even dredge up the caravan if time permits.”

There’s a bit of silence, but nothing more than a ‘harumph’ from him as he leans back. “Alright, then. Next-”

“That’ll be me!” Lucia pipes up. She’s actually slightly less loud at the moment. “Okay, so, can I say something about your answers?”

“No, Lucia,” Tandal interrupts before you can say anything. “That’s the rule. No inference before the final grading.”

“Yeah, just-!” Another noise from Tandal has her sighing (yet still smiling) and shrugging. “Okay, sure! Anyway, my turn! So, here’s my situation! Might be slightly different!”

“Remember to keep it down, dear,” Tandal says with little heat in her voice.

“Right! So!” She takes a deep breath. “Let’s say there was this really manipulative man who conned a young woman out of her money thanks to their summon, who remained hidden. You know they were conned since you witnessed him unknowingly reveal the summon and the con to you, but no one else noticed. What would you do?”

Huh. That one’s a bit more open ended.

Lysan has to think on this one a bit longer than others. “I would...I mean, I think the best option would be to report it, though I might be biased...but I dunno if there would be any proof. Maybe I’d just try to catch up to the woman and tell her, or maybe treat her to something as a consolation prize?” Interesting. You’d have thought he’d have gone after the conman after what he’s said so far.

Lucia tilts her head a bit. “Yeah? And the other half says…?”

Hmm…

>What DO you say?"

Hm. It’s hard to honestly answer this one, actually. It’s too simple, too basic. You know you wouldn’t really do anything, but that might not be the best option...then again, perhaps lying would be worse? Eventually, you decide to give a little of both choices, shrugging slightly. “I suppose I’d agree with him. We wouldn’t be able to do anything without hard proof. Either way, I’d prefer to just stay near Lysan.” You adjust yourself in your seat- not much longer now, at least. “I mean, to be frank, she could turn violent for whatever reason- people have gotten enraged for less. Not to mention that, as far as we know the girl could be in the scam and just playing the victim.”

“Really?” Lysan interrupts. “You think so?”

You can just offer a shrug. “I think it’d be smart to stay near you regardless of what you suggested. About the worst I’d suggest would be reporting it to the guards. Aside from that...” You make a wavering motion with your head, indicating your neutrality on the issue. Lucia’s eyebrows are raised a bit, and she opens her mouth to speak, before Tandal once again beats her to it.

“Very well. As you can surmise, I’ll have the last word. And this is not a question, but rather I would like a physical example of your actions, given a particular circumstance…” Ah. Here we go. “If you both would get up from your seats? Thantos, if you would prepare situation R?”

You get up, and the crow’s eyes glow quickly. Although she says nothing, the crow creates an interesting scene. There’s a scene in which there’s a clear hostage, although the hostage’s face is covered by some sort of shawl. They’re held by an equally faceless individual at swordpoint. The man seems jittery, and the hostage nervous. “Now, they’re all gonna die, starting with this one! Unless you give me your summoner in exchange...then I won’t kill them!” Says the individual, muffled, yet understandable.

“Wha- miss Tandal?” Lysan looks at the teacher aghast, who holds his incredulous stare with one of her own.

“I felt it apt for the...type of summon you’ve brought forth, Mister Lysan. Now, then. What will you do in this situation?”

“I ain’t got all day!” The phantom yells.

“Why...uh...dangit!” He turns to you. “Kyria, I know what you’re like, but...we can’t!”

> “You can’t. I can.” Shoot through the ‘hostage’ to secure his death and protect Lysan.

I mean I guess the "right" answer here is to be diplomatic and stall? Calm down Jitters and get him to lower his guard before we pop him off.
But since they made this simulation just for us and Lysan is frozen up, may as well go for the quickest solution.
We could always try to emphasis the futility of hostage taking by shooting the hostage first, and making direct eye contact with the proctors. That might be funny.
...
If the hostage taker has accomplices offscreen as it were, and it seems likely given that he said
>"Now, they’re all gonna die, starting with this one!-
Then shooting in past the hostage will result in the other hostages being executed.
Thankfully those people aren't rendered and are safely ignored!

Yep. That's usually what happens.

But rule number 1 is never give them more hostages.

The second rule is for every concession you make, they have to do something for you.

And mostly it's just a matter of waiting then out. When he said they don't have all day, well we do.

Pretty much the general rule for hostage situations is that you don't attack until they actually kill a hostage. You have lots of options up to then, shutting of power and water then negotiating to restore it. Negotiating for food delivery.

Quite honestly if you're in a hostage taking situation in the first place you're pretty much screwed because when you kill a hostage you don't have them any more.

And if we do start fighting them then they'll have to choose between fighting back or escaping instead of worrying about hostages.

So really then having a hostage is at best a delaying tactic. Unless we let them take our summoner, at which point they can kill him and dispel us."

Killing the hostage is the immoral option, giving up Lysan is the stupid option.

If they're willing to kill the hostage, they're willing to kill Lysan, so it just gives up our ability to threaten them.

Maintaining the stand off however only benefits us because they either eventually give in, or they kill the hostage and we kill them all once they do.

A cruel, but effective solution would be for us to wound the hostage enough to required medical aid, then flip the script and tell them that if they don't surrender, the hostage will die and there won't be anything holding us back.

Still super immoral, but if they're not willing to surrender then it's just a matter of time before they kill whatever hostage they have anyways.

"Rolled 4 (1d5)

“Then hush,” you say. Hostage situations, whether real or faked, weren’t a great area for you. At least, in terms of public perception. You knew that, and mostly were fine with it...except for situations like this, which were thankfully rare. It’s not about JUST you, this time. So, then...wonder if you could try a bit of finesse. Pointing a finger at the man, who flinches, but doesn’t cut just yet, you try to speak up a bit. “Do you think I won’t just kill you after you kill the hostage? You’re doomed either way. This is futile.”

You can’t afford to look at either side now- no matter what Lysan or the proctors are thinking, you’re committed, now. “You ain’t that tough!” The hologram yells. “An’ it won’t matter if I’m dead if-” you see the thing’s wrist tilt, just a bit. That’ll have to do.

Suddenly, a single pip- a tiny, insignificant, finger-sized magi-beam lights from your pointer, and in an instant it flashes against the man’s lower forearm, through and behind it, traveling upwards a bit as it impacts the far wall, leaving a small trail of soot. It’s just an illusion, and so the hologram takes no damage, but you believe that the situation was clear enough, considering it now seems to be paused.

“W-what the?” You turn to see Lysan gobsmacked, and unsure. “What did you just…?”

“That would’ve cut his arm off,” you supply, looking from him to the panel; the crow of which actually has its head tilted, almost as in curiosity. “I hope that’s considered acceptable.”

“We shall see,” Tandal says, but her face is impassive beyond that. “Thantos?” The crow, seemingly shaking itself out of it’s stupor, crows again, and the hologram fades. “Thank you for your efforts. If you would please hold and return to the waiting area while we converse. I believe there’s...a great deal here to overlook.”

“Y-yes ma’am,” Lysan says shakily. You merely nod before you walk back. “I don’t know whether to be mad, shocked, or amazed,” he whispers as you take your seats.

“You didn’t, so I did,” you remark evenly. Although you can’t blame him entirely- kid isn’t even grown yet. “I’d thought about simply shooting through them, really- but I figured you’d make that face, and it’d ruin your chances of passing.” You add on as he gives a horrified look. “My first priority is to protect YOU. Not anyone else.” His face falls as he considers that, but you don’t say anything else to prod him.

It’s a long few minutes.

Ignore this roll. No, seriously."

"“Mister Lysan and Kyria?” Finally. Let’s see what happened…

As you both walk up, it’s clear Lysan is nervous as all getout. In fact, you’d say that he seems more prepared to have failed than anything else. All of the teachers- Lucia included- have absolutely straight faces, as though they practiced the exact same expression and are getting to try it out in public only now. “Mister Lysan,” Tandal starts. “Overall, we have reason to believe your bond is rather thin. Your summon seems to show little more than lip service in terms of verbal respect towards you, and seems to undermine your authority on more than one point. In fact, in some respects, it’s almost as though YOU are the one taking orders from HER.” Lysan winces, frowning a bit.

“Not to mention, she’s pretty bloodthirsty, if you ask me!” Lucia continues as she glances at you, her voice not above an eight for once. “I like how you were willing to go to help folks out whenever you could! That’s not common!” And then the smile returns to her face. “But even during the situations she said she was willing to protect you, she usually did it with offensive maneuvers instead of defending you outright! The only time she was willing to ease up were when you didn’t seem to be in any direct danger!”

“And even during THAT she was rather coarse and heavy-handed,” Vanita adds on. “The art of subtlety is not her strong suit, clearly. Although she did at least give a basic attempt at diplomacy...and she saw not to escalate an issue where there was no immediate physical danger,” the lady admits with a tilt of her head. “You, boy, at least took the dangers into account more often than she.”

Namui nods. “She was direct in the situations she was given, and although she counteracted you on some issues, it’s clear she has experience in such that she draws from. I, for one, found those suggestions...well, mostly understandable. MOSTLY,” he warns. “I can appreciate acting to get rid of a threat before it has a chance to inflict more damage. Waffling around, I don’t know,” he says as he fixes Lysan with a look.

“And it seems that she can get a touch clever about such actions, when the mood strikes her,” Cordin follows up. “Although I think you were a bit dull, boy, I can appreciate your desire to keep the peace. You need a bit better reaction time, I think, to keep up with your summon, but I like how you thought the situation through.”

“And although you might have faltered somewhat on the last ‘question’, I will admit that you were placed in extraordinary circumstance; one that even professionals struggle to successfully answer all of the time,” Tandal admits. “That said, I’m not so keen on your summon’s answer to it, although effective it may be.”

Hmph.

Lysan takes a moment to take it all in, looking away briefly as he internalizes all of the comments. “Sooooo...did we pass?”

They look at each other briefly, and Tandal looks at you straightly. “By a vote of three to two…”

“PASS.” They all say.

“YES!” The boy’s actually on his knees now. Good grief. You quickly lift him up, and the two of you walk out of the gymnasium before he starts cheering again.

“Heeey, you look happy!” A familiar voice sounds out as someone collides into his back- Nerisa again. “Guessin’ you passed?”

“Sure did!” he says happily- almost doesn’t seem to mind how Nerisa’s hugging him from behind. “It was close, but I did it!”

“Awesome!” she cheers. “Knew ya could! Sooooo then. How’s about a little victory jog, just the two of us!” Lysan’s eyes goggle at that before she giggles and sets him down. “C’mon, we’ll actually head down to the yogurt place my mom owns! My treat, and we can talk about tomorrow, too!”

“Oh!” Yeah, that got his attention better. “Well, I guess…”

“Hey!” Oh, huh. Iris, too? “Glad you made it out of there. Hey Nerisa,” she offers quickly, before turning back to Lysan. “So, I heard there’s something goin’ on in the park, some kinda dance-battle demonstration! I thought it’d be cool if we went!”

“Huh? Oh, yeah, I heard about it- I wouldn’t get your hopes up,” Nerisa interrupts. “I heard they’re all flash, no substance. Waste of time.”

“What? No way!” Iris scowls. “Well, I want to see them anyway. And if they are frauds then we’ll call them out on it! C’mon!” She starts to drag him away, before another tug from the opposite end stops them, causing a squawk from the hapless boy.

“Whoa! We were gonna go for a jog, though! Y’know, mental prep for tomorrow and all.” She lightly tugs him back, and you get a chill down your spine…

Iris scoffs. “Oh, come on, you can jog any day, this doesn’t happen all the time! We need to make the most of it!”

Bellbelle looks between the two worriedly, but makes no move to stop her master, before glancing at you. Lysan seems to be more focused on not getting his arms dislocated to voice his thoughts, however...

>Nope. No. Nuh uh. No way. Kid’s on his own for this one.
>Hmm...well, strategy is important. Plus, she asked first. Get Iris off of him.

Well, all things considered, that dance-battle thing sounds curious enough. You take a gentle hand towards Nerisa. “Perhaps we can go jogging later. Iris is right- this doesn’t sound like an everyday thing.” Nerisa scowls at you, almost looking as though you betrayed her for whatever reason, but lets go.

“Fine…” she scowls. “I guess I’ll talk to you later or something.” Without further fanfare, she walks off, her steps far less light.

Iris, for her part, frowns only briefly at the receding girl before regaining her smile. “She’ll get over it. C’mon, they shouldn’t be starting for another hour. We’ve got time to get there!” As she practically drags him along, you wonder what you’re getting into…

“Wait, you had to rescue a HOSTAGE?” Iris asks incredibly as you walk. “How’d you solve that one?”

“I didn’t,” Lysan admits. “Kyria just kinda...shot him. I mean, she tried to talk to him!” he quickly amends. “But afterwards, she kinda did this thing and, if it was a real life situation, his arm would’ve come off...or so she says, at least.” He still seems a bit unnerved at that, but. “Anyway, that was the last one.”

“Yikes,” Iris admits. “Well, at least you know she’s gonna keep you safe, huh? Anyway, shouldn’t be much longer.”

Indeed, it’s not, and as you arrive, you can see just what’s going on there now. There’s three individuals- two human and one VERY long-legged lady you think is a summon- in a quickly made ring, and they all seem to be dancing...but now that you see it, you’re aware of what the situation is. You’ve seen similar combat styles before; moving to an invisible rhythm, kicks and swipes that resemble dance moves more than anything else. It always seemed a bit too...ostentatious for you, but you’d see it in action a few times. “Whoa!” Iris seems rather taken by it, at least. “That’s so cool!”

“Wow. You sure they’re not acting?” Lysan asks. The way they’re dipping and diving, ducking and weaving makes it look as though it’s choreographed. “They’re just barely not hitting each other…”

True, the lady summon seems to be more enjoying showing her gams off to the audience than much martial display- not that it seems anyone has any problem with it. “Come on, Ly! Let’s find a good spot!” Bellbelle simply watches them go, tittering a bit. “Oh my…”

Ha. Well, seems like this’ll at least be calmer than a day at the circus. Although, interestingly enough, you notice that there’s a few folks that look more dressed for business out here; bystanders still, but they’re close enough to the summon’s ‘corner’, where there’s a little table and booth with pamphlets and pictures. Seems like this is as much advertisement as it is a showcase or training.

>Just relax, walk around by yourself, enjoy the scene...and maybe try not to cause a stir.

“Well, Bellbelle. It seems like it’s just us summons for the time being.” You comment as the two kids find a place to sit. “What about you? You into this at all?” As you look for a place to rest that isn’t too close to them but still in sight, Bellbelle laughs lightly again.

“Oh, not me,” the moth denies. “I just thought it good to accompany Miss Iris along on this. It seemed cute, her determination to get Mister Lysan to go with her.” She faces you, her face doing its best to look sly. “I’m sure you’ve realized that she is attracted to the boy by now.”

You nod; you’d had an inkling for a bit. “Can’t say it’s surprising.” The signs were there if you knew what to look for, really.

But, that wasn’t what you were interested in. Rather, you had some other questions… "So, mind if I ask you a few things, then?"

As you look for a decently far away place to sit, you decide it’s worth airing a couple of them. First and foremost… “So, if you don’t mind my asking, why is Iris so interested in joining that Young Maestros Club? It seems like the sort of place that would look down their noses on her, if they weren’t pretending to confuse her with the waitstaff as a cruel joke.” You’d seen the type, and Iris...not so much.

Bellbelle sighs at this, her antennae drooping a bit. “I’m afraid I’m not so sure why, myself. I’d guess it was financially and socially motivated, considering her current home situation, but ultimately…I know as much as you do about that, I’m sorry to say. It’s rather strange, as you say, but they do have a number of connections to industry and other businesses after all. Maybe she wants to gain access to that...”

Huh. Odd. The two seemed thick as thieves. Why would Iris not tell her own summon about her reasons? Maybe you can swing your next question into figuring out. “Wonder if Lysan might know about it. How long have the two known each other?”

At that, her mood brightens a bit. “Ohoho, those two have known each other for quite some time! At least, according to Iris they have. ‘Since before they could work, she tells me!’

“That’s pretty early,” you offer. “He certainly doesn’t seem to say no to her often. Especially considering Nerisa earlier…”

Bellbelle nods- both in agreement, and in noticing a pair of open seats that were a few rows behind the two. “Nerisa is very determined and competitive. She can be rather...a handful, I think is the best way to put it.”

“Nerisa seems familiar with him, too,” you admit as you both sit down. “Same story?”

“Similar,” she corrects. “They met in the playground, I believe. I don’t know the entire story, but as I heard it tell, they met in a playground- not long after Iris met him, apparently. She says she recalls the conversation Iris had with her about meeting ‘the really strong new girl’. She titters again, the idea of it apparently funny to her.

For a while, the two of you simply spectate the scene- you can see Iris seems to be awed by the performance, while Lysan just seems to look nervous, often glancing between the girl on his arm and the people fighting in the center. Not sure what’s going through his head, but you’re not envious of it. “So, what’s the tournament like tomorrow?” you ask to shift mental topics.

“Oh? Well, the tournament is actually ran a bit differently than normal tournaments.” Oh? “Since it’s meant to be a trial of combat skill, there’s no outright winners and losers. Instead, graduates are scored on a point system, and must aggregate a certain number of points to pass through to the next round. After four rounds, whomever has the highest point total ‘wins’. Obviously, winning gives you a large number of points, but you are also scored for technique and ingenuity in battle, as well. So theoretically, someone can ‘lose’, but if they kept the fight close and proved more clever, they could get more points...I think.” She flaps her wings in uncertainty. “It makes sense to me, anyway…”

Huh. That’s a bit different. So, you might not be able to power your way through the tournament, then… “I take it fighting to ‘eliminate’ another summon is looked down on.” you venture casually.

She startles a bit at that one. “Y-yes, I would say so. So if you could, er...kindly not do that…”

You allow yourself a small smile. “What, think I might be too much for them?”

“Q-quite. You are...rather still intimidating when you care to be.” Hah. Before you can seize on that, a cheer goes up from the crowd- seems like the group just managed to finish their performance- but they seem to be gearing up for another one shortly, much to Iris's excitement as she brings her face closer to Lysan's.

"Sometimes, I wish I had human legs..." Bellbelle mourns. "That looks rather fun." Twitching her own, she looks almost distraught. "I don't think these are well suited."

Hmph. “Well, you can fly. I can’t say that I can.”

The moth turns to you fully on hearing that. “R-really? But I’d thought...with your wings…”

“It’s not true flight,” you admit. Although to be honest, you’d yet to actually TRY and see if your wings could lift you, that still didn’t mean they weren’t temporary. You’re still being (mostly) honest. “Would be nice if I could just soar around whenever I wanted. Kind of seems like dancing, to me...” Yeah...there’s a lot of things you could do with actual flight.

“Ohh…”

“And just the height advantage for ranged attacks? That’d be great.” As you turn to her, she has an...odd look on her face. Pitying? Amused? Not certain. Well, whatever. How are the kids doin- oh? Huh.

She’s getting awful close to him...almost looks more than a kiss, but...hm. Maybe you should get up there just in case. “Beg pardon.”

“Hm?” Bellbelle asks, but you’re off and worming through the crowd already. You can see Lysan stiffen up a bit, and you can’t help a frown as you push through another two people- there’s no way they can be… “Excuse me.”

“Ahh!” The both of them shoot up ramrod straight, and Iris whips her head back so fast she actually flinches a bit and puts a hand up to her neck. “Owowow...where did you come from?”

“Back there,” you say, deadpan. As you take a look at the two of them, you can see that there’s something a...cookie? Some sort of treat in her hand. That, plus crumbs on his lap and mouth...so, she was feeding him? Bold of her. But still, he doesn’t seem to be disliking it- even if his face is completely red.

> “If we get matched together tomorrow, I hope you don’t expect him to take it easy on you.”

Tch. Well, if he was going to put himself out there, you wouldn’t pass up the golden opportunity dropped into your lap, no pun intended. “I was thinking about getting a snack for Lysan,” you mention casually as you lean over. “I see you have it covered.”

They both flinch and look at each other as though begging each to hide the other- to no avail, of course. You allow yourself some internal entertainment at their antics before moving on to actual business. “I trust you are enjoying yourself?”

“It’s pretty cool,” Lysan admits. “I wonder what else they might be showing off soon…”

Almost as if to answer that exactly, you here a small drumbeat from the staging area- one of the individuals that made up the ring is hitting it, looking around for a moment to make sure he has people’s attention before speaking. “And so! You all have seen but a taste of the wonders of Labamcho!” Is that what it’s called in this world? “However, it is not only for defense and as health purposes, but it soothes the savage soul, as well! Even for those not of normal human disposition! Come, should anyone be so inclined!”

There’s an undercurrent of nervousness that ripples through the crowd, though whether it’s due to the summon that they’d be challenging or something else, you’re not sure. You’re not too interested, but maybe if one of the kids might be, could give you some one on one time.

“Lysan, don’t you think you could use a bit of extra exercise?” The look on your face tells what you really mean, and he swallows in nervousness, looking back and forth between you, Iris, and the ring.

Unfortunately, Iris is no salvation to him here, as her face lights up with a devious grin. “Hey, yeah! Maybe you could even call this training~” she singsongs. “Don’t be shyyyy…”

“Uhhhhhh…” he only barely gets up, but that’s enough for the summon to zero in on him.

“Ahh, don’t be shy young one! Come, and let me show you the wonders of Labamcho!” Already he’s getting several friendly jeers and encouragement. While initially you wonder if you’re going to have to say something about it, he eventually rises of his own will and stumbles through the crowd, only to quickly be approached by the dancer summon. “Excellent! And you are…?”

“L-lysan, miss…” he stammers out.

“Excellent, Lysan! Now, we shall go over some basic movements- and of course, the crowd is more than welcome to follow along!” She announces the last bit, which stops a few of the snarkier statements cold as their bravado vanishes like smoke. Iris chuckles a bit at that, a muttered ‘see how they like it’ all that you need to know about how she feels about it.

They initially start with some stretches- a couple not too dissimilar from what you and Nerisa were putting him through. Those aren’t so bad, but when they start moving to beginner forms, that’s when things get iffy. You have to sit and watch him stumble through this and that, and although he’s certainly trying his hardest...well, the summoner lady seems to genuinely bear no ill-will towards him, at least.

“At least he’s making an effort,” Iris giggles. “It’s cute. So, you guys ready for the big tourney tomorrow?” She asks all this without even looking at you, but it’s a question worth thinking about.

A good question, actually, considering what you’ve recently learned. In some ways, absolutely. In others… “If I’m being honest, my techniques are fairly simple. I wonder if that’ll be a detriment?” you muse out loud. It’d be good to get an opinion on it from someone at least somewhat knowledgeable on the subject.

“I mean, if it’s like what you did with Bellbelle...honestly? Yeah, maybe.” she admits. “Since the point of the tournament isn’t just to beat down your opponent, it’s to showcase your bond, how well you perform under a high-pressure situation, your critical and creative thinking skills, all that stuff. They just put it in a way where you summons can beat the bongos out of each other ‘cause you guys seem to find that fun. I think.” She blinks once. “Geez, now I’m thinking about stuff I don’t wanna. Anyway!” She waves her arms like she’s wiping the subject off a board. “It’s super important, think I said that before. There’s a ton that winners and high placers in the tournament can get from this.” She giggles as Lysan is made to do a particular position- twisting his body around while his feet stay planted has his arms waving to keep balance, which he does if only barely. “I bet Lady Long Legs over there and her summon got a good placing. I mean, I’m not sure, but she’s got all the makings of one.”

“Excuse me?” A soft voice interrupts. You both look behind you to see Bellbelle looking on curiously. “I thought I heard my name. Did you need me for something?”

“Oh, nah,” Iris waves off. “Just mentioned you in relation to the tourney tomorrow.”

“Ah, yes. She was discussing that with me, as well,” she mentions, nodding to you. “I hope we don’t get matched early on. That would be...disheartening.”

Iris just huffs. “Pft, no kidding. Don’t worry, though, we’ll be fine!” Soon, you hear a rough panting, and turn back to see Lysan at last finished his public exercise. He’s red-faced (which you aren’t sure is from embarrassment or exertion) and sweating, and as he sits down he favors Iris with a tortured grin as the summoner lady makes one last appeal to the benefits of her art. “So...haa...how was that…?” he pantingly asks.

She pats him on the shoulder as indication. “You were fun to watch!”

“I...phew...I’ll take it.” It’s then that the crowd begins to disperse- the summon lady seems to start to come over, but she ends up meeting your gaze before she takes her first step. She takes a step backwards instead, and seemingly thinking twice of it, turns away to help her business cohorts pack up with a slightly too cheery and loud exaltation of thanks.

Iris and Lysan don’t seem to notice, and while it’s vaguely curious, you can’t find any reason to want to address it. Especially when Lysan insists on heading home so he can get to bed early, and Iris agrees. He’ll need to be in top mental condition for tomorrow, as the competition is slated to start early and last the majority of the day.

But that’s right...there’s the issue of that warning that those stuffed shirts gave you. And if it had anything to do with that other Outgoer, that would be trouble. Wonder if you could look at it any further on your own...you might be able to render the warning/threat null. Then again, it may just be better to just let them think they have you sufficiently spooked and let it be a surprise when they try to do whatever they’re doing. Even if you wouldn’t ‘win’, though… there might still be a way to get points for that whole ‘ingenuity’ thing...

I'm also interested in seeing if all this emphasis on Bond if there's some social Persona style bond bullshit going on. If so, Lysan should definitely try to max ours out before he goes to bed because ours is literally the only one that matters, but be clear we are not a romance path. Not that Lysan could handle multiple romance paths, he really ought to pick between Iris and Nerisa.

Flashback to the new moon knights quest, which is one of my favorite arcs btw. Miranda was diving between swords with sick pirouettes and stuff. We could style all over whoever we're up against, but we'll need Lysan to even pretend to know how to command us."

We don't do this often enough.

Assuming this wins, what should we work on? Something new? Improving something existing? Adding flair to our existing?"

No obvious mention in quest i'm just assuming that if we go to the club we will try to sneak into it.

And summons caugth doing something like that are usually considered rogue summons and so everything is valid to de-summon it.

Either fireworks or sticky mana we need something that will impress and won't make us look like a complete bruiser."

Fireworks are flashy, but don't have much combat use besides being another flavor of our flashbang. Sticky mana without the explosive element is just magic goo, but maybe with some work it could be actually useful. Maybe as a slow-down effect, similar to an ice spell?

But remember that before she was the stone cold motherfucker we know and love, she was a pretty normal magical girl(albeit a little bit more violent than the normal ones).

If i remember correctly, she was a pretty run of the mill MG until Sal found her."
