I think combat would benefit the most from a tactical layer on which the player has only indirect control and more logistics for the player to worry about. The main principle for me is that the combat with roughly equal numbers and tech should result in a draw most of the time if the battle takes place on equal terms (enviroment factors). The only exceptions should be (semi) rare occasions when admirals outskill their opponent or just luckily use the right tactic (if battles were more like how land battles work in other paradox games). I know this has been somewhat adressed with the emergency jump so ships jump away when they are about to be destroyed but this makes wars largely come down to who wins the first battle.
For all of this to work though it's essential that the ai uses the same strategies and tactics, but also would be able to fight defensively if it can't win offensively. As it is right now the ai will always try to attack a fleet or place were it knows it can win. This means that 'choke' points are only used effectively by human players, if an ai knows it can't win a war it won't try to set up an optimal defence in those systems. Also all ai's fight exactly the same with the only difference be their preferred weapons.

Sending a fleet to the other side of the galaxy shouldn't be a something that is done on the fly and should take preperation. Campaigns that are done with less preperation should be less effective. Maybe fleets could have different formations which you can choose from, giving a battleship a wing of picket ship destroyers that will always stick with the capital ship they're supposed to screen. Have combat be in fases like in HOI or other paradox games, design tactics of which admirals semi randomly choose one depending on their skill level. These tactics could be in the from of long range bombardment or maybe kamikaze attacks."

There is almost no tactics or strategy now stellaris lacks any real sort of strategy other then use 'choke' points, which the ai doesn't use properly. Oh yes early game I would use a blue laser ofc, but it shouldn't take you more than 30 years to get plasma canons.

If you were to go with a 2M 2S destroyer design, you'd probably be able to roll with 100% of those.

It ends up being worse than having more corvettes that are specialized in auto canons - because of the DPS + tracking + penetration values, I've based by designs purely on game data nothing else.

Not my point. When it comes to dealing with high-evasion targets, a UV laser dishes out more DPS than a plasma thrower, even if they're on same level of research.

I might just be imagining things, but I find that enemy ships take damage long before the projectile graphics indicate an impact.

Do that, each projectile does an insane amount of damage except in fight it takes a lot of time for each to reach.

If you normalize its dps it's the same as the one I gave you in the picture so you could safely ignore ROF so to speak - but keep in mind that the projectiles are slow anyway.

Sent it against some angry space farts and set speed to slowest.

You need to create longterm hatreds early and stick to them while not buffing your passive diplomacy in any way, empires should literally be forming alliances against you and instantly declaring war as direct results of your belligerant diplomacy.

Also this is why you make 30+ custom empires available to play against to ensure there will be several competent, consistently strong empires in direct conflict to anything youre playing, instead of leaving this entirely up to randomized generation which generally fills the map with worthless species, xenophiles, low tech mongoloids etc with zero impact past 2250. RNG will have you competing with, at best, 2 capable empires that will have impact by the time its 2400"
