Stuff such as how Disney ensured animation should be seen as a "family-friendly" medium, the comics code authority destroying the genres of horror and romance which used to dominate and left superhero comics to take over for far too long, and even general geographic factors hampering the reach of comics compared to Japan's metro system and tight cities ensuring manga can be readily available literally anywhere.
I don't know if it will ever get meaningfully better. I see the most interesting and experimental artists now decide to work on video games instead, while webcomics have been supplanted by webtoons and American animation is now bootleg "anime" or absolute trash like Deadendia.
