Why do you give away this secret pencil sharpening :'(

Anyway, 3nj0y Br0: https://lalaragimov.blogspot.com/2013/11/treatises.html

She has a few articles where she peek through those to understand specific issues, like how different authors viewed hatching.

It's good stuff anon, but it can be a distraction from actually practicing. Even if you don't have le secret sharpening technique, you can still control your values well and make master pieces.'

picrel is from his work "Drawing and Sketching in Pencil." I have a physical copy of his "Rendering in Pencil" which consolidates the information in the former and also another work of his on pencil drawing. In Rendering he says the following:
>Types of Points
>2. A second type is a blunt or broad point shown at 2, Fig. 8 [i.e., the point shown in OP]. In making this, the wood only is first cut away, a fairly long lead of full circumference being exposed (except in the brittle, softest degrees). With the pencil then held in normal drawing position (B), the point is rubbed on the sandpaper until quite blunt, after which the end of the lead is smoothed by means of a few strokes on paper. This point will make either a broad or a fine stroke, depending on whether the pencil is held in its normal drawing position as at B, or inverted as at C...'

So he cuts away the wood only on the pencil until its exposed like in pic A, then uses sand paper to blunt the edge like in B.'

>like in pic A
note that A is already sharpened. yes you first just cut some of the wood off, but if you were using a new pencil you would get something like in picrel (which doesn't have to be as long as picrel, and Guptill recommends softer pencils have less graphite exposed, as they are more likely to break). then you grind it down with sandpaper to get B and can use the wide or fine side as desired.'

in Rendering, Guptill shows a sharp knife in his illustrations of materials and how to sharpen a pencil but also mentions a razor blade as an alternative. personally, I have just used a razor blade which has worked well (enough for my liking). I am right-handed, so I stabilize the blade by holding the right side with my thumb and index finger and rest the sharp point of the blade at an angle on the paint of the pencil - the sharp side of the blade is facting the top of the pencil. I push only with my left thumb on the left side of the blade and try not to cut at too sharp of an angle (i.e., closer to 45 degrees than 90) otherwise I'm more likely to chip the graphite right away.'
