Optimus/Convoy is basically in a comatose state in TF: Masterforce, leaving behind a 'transtector' - a Transformer body that needs bonding with an outside will. Ginrai is just a human trucker, though more accurately fits the biker punk motif, who ends up taking on a set of 'master braces' that allow him to transform into a Godmaster / Powermaster, just like it allows others to transform into head masters.

the 'God' in Godmaster in general refers to any divine power - a direct parallel to the western Powermasters, with a mystical tint.
As it turns out, in MasterForce, the Godmasters tap into the trinity of mystical power of earth, heaven and the human soul. Ginrai realizing this and managing to tap into all three is what eventually allows his fully fused form where he merges with the trailer into Super Ginrai and then with the autonomous unit Godbomber into God Ginrai, to defeat the series major antagonist: Devil Z. (Basically a recolored Scorponok taken over by some form of evil cosmic energy. Yes- they did the Megaman 8 Evil Energy plot.)

Iirc after Devil Z is wiped out, something transpires that allows the transtectors to awake again and regain their consciousness, but they turn out to inherit part of their temporary human bonded partners personalities in the process. In Convoy's case the binding was so strong, that the result is basically an amalgemate that actually continues to go by his partner's name: Ginrai, rather than Convoy / Optimus Prime.

Then in Transformers Victory, he ends up mortally wounded and gets rebuilt into Victory Leo - where he in turn becomes a bonding power-up unit for Star Saber.';

At first that was true. But Japan made its own lore stemming from the trademarks Hasbro made starting in 1985, not even a year after its American launch. We had Marvel comics and the G1 cartoon, they had a manga series and countless anime and OVAs. I always use the analogy that saying Transformers is a Hasbro creation is like saying Zoids is a Marvel UK creation; its reductionist either way. A lot of people are accepting the expansive Japanese side of Transformers because they live in an era where its no longer locked behind regional exclusivity.

Depends on what era you're talking about. In the G1 era, Japan outpaced America quickly, and the Unicron trilogy was basically Aaron Archer living in Japan. It wasn't till the post movie era that Japan took a step back in media due to declining popularity. However the Japanese side and the American side gave always worked closely together on the toys, they aren't two entities but Takara/Hasbro are one.';

I guess it depends on your point of view. It became primarily American, but only really in the latter decade of the franchise media. I use Zoids as the analogy because even though Zoids is mostly Japanese these days, its name and trademarks and initial lore came from Marvel UK, much like Transformers. Also like Transformers, Japan made its own lore completely separate from the old UK lore (even though Japan used Sunbow G1 as their springboard). If Transformers continued on the route it was on in G1, it would've become Japanese dominated like Zoids. However, Transformers was always much like a tennis match, Hasbro served and for 30 years Hasbro and Takara went back and forth being the more dominant force. Regardless, Hasbro and Takara will always choose whats best for their respective markets. Unless one or the other steps out/stops owning the franchise, it will always be American and Japanese franchise that practically exists as two separate halves.
