Current options from basic research give me:
2024 Hyundai Tucson Limited (28MPG, 38.7/80.3 ft3)
2024 Kia Niro SX (53MPG, 22.8/63.7 ft3)
2024 Honda CR-V EX-L (30MPG, 39.3/76.5 ft3)

All should hover around $32-37k

My main concerns are reliability, maintenance costs, cargo capacity, and MPG.

The Kia/Hyundai have the best warranty, but I have a 2014 Honda Fit currently and have had no problems with it so I lean towards Honda out of the gate.

I've got a test drive for the Niro scheduled for next week, local Honda dealer hasn't returned my email yet.'

Used ford escape hybrid, rx350h, highlander hybrid, rav4, crv or even a Mazda would all be better choices than the kia/hyundie. The reason they sell is because they have a warranty for 100k and getting warranty work is a pain in the ass. After that 100k you are likely to notice it fall apart and break down rapidly. My current Honda Fit is going just fine, I'm replacing my old 2007 Ford Explorer, which is a 2ndary vehicle and only used occasionally, so I can limp on with it for 6-12 more months if I needed to.

Don't have easy access to charging as I don't have my own garage and running a charging cable across the sidewalk in a neighborhood is kinda shitty.

So I would have to be a shitty neighbor, deal with 120v slow charging, or be a shitty neighbor AND pay to install a 240v charger so I'm not spending 15+ hours charging.

Also at the sub $40k price point you're basically getting a barebones interior. Not to mention we're not far off from a new generation of EVs that should have extended range, faster charging, etc. I'll likely replace my Honda Fit with an EV in another ~5-10 years depending how the market looks at the time.'

I wouldn't even buy a new EV, desu. Why experience the negative impact of depreiation when you can buy a solid $10,000-$15,000 EV and experience the positive impact of it instead? There's a ton of great low mile used EVs on the market that have lost over half their value. At those prices it doesn't even bother me that its outmatched by newer EVs with better tech.'

The new car smell was also off, I now understood what people meant by saying "it feels like driving an appliance." The safety features almost caused a major multi-car accident. I'm going 85 on the freeway and if you lane change without signaling, it thinks you're drifting lanes. It locks the steering wheel to block you into the lane AND slams on the brakes automatically. Slammed down from 85 to 65 or so very quickly and I had cars swerving around avoiding a huge pile up. There was no way I could readily turn this off. I'll fuckinf never drive a Honda and spit on them, what kind of "safety" feature is that? How much available free time and money do you have to make them honor their "best in class" warranty? Because last time I checked, lawyers like to get paid for their time. And you'll need a lawyer.
Hyundai won't even take care of their "car self ignites no matter if it's hyundai, kia, or genesis" problem. And it's not just one problem that causes this. A leak over the ABS unit does this. Faulty factory installation of the fuel line caused this. The REPAIR for the faulty fuel line that caused fires caused this. Shit, one of the many "don't park your car in or near a flammable structure" recalls was because the tow package wiring was over torqued and a fuse wasn't free enough for them to protect their customers.
And then there is the theft problem. Their solution to their lack of immobilizers in the US was allowing customers to, at their own expense, buy an aftermarket immobilizer. They wouldn't even chip in for installation costs.
They "allowed" customers to do something they could legally do anyways.

I was way ahead of traffic to the point signaling or not wouldn't have mattered. That was the only reason I didn't get rear ended for damn near fully braking on the freeway (the car doing it, not me)

The circumstances were the vehicle's fault and could've been catastrophic. I don't normally drive that vehicle so I'm not going to sit there and go through its settings, I'm merely pointing out a major fallacy in these supposed "safety features." The point, retard, is that toyota liked what tesla was doing enough to partner with them for an early EV that is still just as functional as when it was sold new more than a decade ago. It also happened to carry the Rav4 badging and styling the other tard was gushing over.'

Hyundai and Kia have long warranties because they are shitboxes that will fall apart in 5 years, and nobody would have ever bought them without the meme warranty. However, when your korean garbage car starts falling apart, good luck getting anything covered by the warranty.

Mazdas are well made. They also don't put CVTs into any of their vehicles, I believe. CX-5s are all made in Japan with top quality control. If you want a small SUV that is a great option. CX-30 is a bit cheaper, but they're also pretty small. More like a lifted car imo.'

Parts issues? They're not making 2024s with the 9-speed auto even though they claim it's an avaliable option, I can't see a way to build one with it and no dealers near me seem to have a non-CVT Encore in stock.'

CX-5 is 29.1 ft3 / 59.3 ft3

If you can find a sedan/hatch with similar cargo space under $40k, and without a CVT, let me know.'

Most wagons will get you more or atleast the same boot space as suv's and many larger sedans will have more space than the Fit.'

> Most wagons
None of them in my price range

The only one is the Mini Clubman, which is 17.5 ft3 / 47.9 ft3

All other wagons are $50k+ from Audi/Volvo/Mercedes or have a CVT (Subaru)

As for sedans, while they might have more trunk space than the fit, they don't generally have as much total space since their rear seats don't fold flat for more storage.

The Camry for example has 15.1ft3 in the trunk, and no way to fold the seats flat.

If you think you know something I don't go ahead and tell me instead of telling me "something" is out there when in my research, there isn't.'

Went to the mazda dealer today, test drove:
Mazda3 hatchback AWD turbo
CX-30 AWD non-turbo
CX-50 non-turbo (all trims are AWD)
CX-5 not considered it's just too soccer mom

In general they all fell well put together with good quality materials and handled/drove well, though I wouldn't necessarily describe them as "sporty" (except maybe the mazda3 sort of but not really). Not that they handled bad or anything rather that the ride quality seemed more focused on comfort.'

Surprisingly quick (5.9 0-60 supposedly) plenty of power for merging and overtaking, didn't really feel like you were going fast but you could be doing 90. Less shit boxy than I had imagined, especially the interior, though it's fairly small. Visibility isn't great either. It's basically at the bare minimum of usability for us the missing space from her Alltrack was pretty noticeable. Taller adults probably wont fit in the back seats. I'm also a bit worried it's low enough that if(when) she hits a curb it would fuck something up
>CX-30
Despite not looking that much different than the 3 it had a decent amount more space in the back, and better visibility (there's an extra little window between the rear doors & rear pillar that's not there on the 3). Front interior space was pretty much the same maybe slightly more headroom. It's not any longer than the 3 so the extra space is just vertical. I'm 6'-2" and could sit in the back seat fine. My fiance said this one felt most like her Alltrack overall but more comfortable and she liked it more than she anticipated. The non-turbo is not slow but definitely not fast, basically at the minimum level acceptable for us to not be annoying.
>CX-50
This one surprised both of us by how comfortable it was, both the seats and the overall ride quality, while not being obnoxiously tall or handling poorly. The extra room in the interior and back was definitely noticeably. Overall storage space more similar to the alltrack but more interior passenger room.'

The CX-30 would probably be better as a general commuter (the majority of it's purpose) and is more of the price range we had in mind, but the CX-50 is making me do some soul searching. It's a little bit more car than we need, but it would be a lot nicer for road trips or whatever. It's a newer model though and is gonna be a bit higher price than what we originally had in mind. The extra ground clearance and space is pretty nice, and the interior is surprisingly nice. Forgot to say - the non-turbo trim was kinda sluggish. Probably not unusable for sone people but we would have to opt for the turbo (a decent amount more expensive than original planned budget).'
