I've heard they can be a great place to meet new and interesting people but can also be dens of schizophrenic, meth-addicted debauchery depending on your luck - low level dealers strapped for cash stealing your shit, or mentally unwell freaks publicly masturbating in the dorms etc.

i think this meth dealer stuff or whatever is mostly about american hostels, because america doesnt have as much of a hostel culture. you will be fine in france, it will be fairly normal young people, a few pajeets here and there maybe. ive spent months in hostels and have no bad experiences';
