My boss was right next to me when it happened because he was training me to set up a machine that I haven't done before. He never told me the screws had to be extra right on that part though, so I don't know. If he lets me work on that machine again I'm going to tighten those screws so fucking hard. Unfortunately, life is all about trial and error. I had an internship where I was absolutely awful at and I would just keep getting scolded week in week out. Then I learnt from that experience and became acceptable. Now at my current job, I have exceeded all expectations to say the least. As long as you show you're hardworking and you're willing to learn and improve, they won't hate you so much. You just learn about what to look out for as you work. That should be the official line you push, and I'm sure your boss would agree. I doubt they would interrogate you over it, or otherwise give you a hard time unless they were massive assholes, but this is work we're talking about so there is always a minor risk. That being said, don't profusely apologize, and don't even acknowledge it happened unless directly asked by a supervisor, and in that even refer back to the official story.
