Each torrent contains unique files only: no overlap of video files in one torrent also being in another torrent. Filenames are based on the Base64/MD5 hashes, and I only download a file with whatever hash once. When I started out I was using IPFS, which would have made things simpler because it handles all the de-duplication automatically. I could have downloaded the files multiple times, like multiple months would have the same files and different files. I quit using ipfs for this for reasons. I don't de-duplicate files if there is one video which looks identical to another but the hashes are different - haven't seen that anyways. If you want to actually/properly archive stuff, you should set wget to write WARC files. However, like you said, "size requirement", so I am only sharing the raw files for now. And I am not screwing up the raws by deleting any that "look the same as some other video": not the sort of archive that I want to cultivate. There's enough fucking up raw files across the Internet, due to boorus and whatever no supporting no-derive files and doing other annoying/weak stuff.';

Compression of webm and gif files does pretty much nothing due to the data being high entropy. All of the tarballs are uncompressed, and compressed files are also annoying/slow; I don't compress them for faster packing/unpacking. Two more reasons for uncompressed tarballs: hash determinism, which is less likely when compression is thrown into the mix AND playing videos straight from the .tar file if you have the byte offsets. I could elaborate more on those two points.

I created hashes+metadata files for most of the torrents, so it's closer to "information complete". Those meta files specify which folder contains which files, how large each file is, etc.

This likely indicates that a HDD of mine is slowing down and going to die sometime too soon. I should probably modify the scraper to be less destructive to HDDs. What it does now, which is basically no caching:
- check to see if files exist on disk and if they do don't download it since that hash/file has already been downloaded

I think that does too many reads and this would be better or does less reads and more memory operations (not disk operations):
- check a text file, sql database (*shudders*), or parquets thing that I heard that someone else was using; check to see if a file has already been downloaded or not, then . . .

Other solutions, maybe: ZFS with dedup on; IPFS';

As I understand, ordered from most destructive to least destructive to HDDs:
- write all files for all months, no de-duplication
- (what I am doing) only download not-previously-downloaded files, dedup by checking files on disk

- hours later I see that the computer "soft" crashed
- I restart computer, apply some updates
- I see that qBittorrent finished creating 4chan_gif_2023_09.zip.torrent; I think it finished, if it didn't I guess it would not have written that .torrent file at all
- open qBittorrent, a small window says "Loading torrents \ [Exit]"
- I click the "Exit" button due to realizing that two SSHFS mounts are probably gone after restarting
- qBittorrent not starting after clicking it and waiting for like an hour
- qBittorrent is borked now; if it starts up again I hope I don't have to check trillions of bytes (I hope that fast resume will work)';

The problem was that the computer would work for a while, downloading via qBittorrent, then some minutes later (less than an hour each time I think), it would crash/reboot. Possible causes of the problem, solutions:
- downloading to an SSHFS path, not doing this any more as I set the software and hardware to be more local
- electrical or power supply or battery issue, not fixed
- 15 TB from 3 ZFS HDDs being imported was a problem, not fixed (maybe) and only 2 zpools being imported works fine
- FUSE not being installed or working correctly (not sure if the zfs stuff I am using is fuse-based), I may have fixed this when I was dealing with mounting IPFS as a regular FS via FUSE and the problems and solutions I had there

Other things I was doing which take time (needed more free space):
1. rsync to free up space
2. SKIPPED this step, dammit, I forgot: saving metadata
3. Deleting off of src (keeping off-drive dest)

About step #2: meaning this - running stat on all of the files, lower time resolution timestamps are in the ZIP file though and maybe mtime is perfectly kept in dest to; however, some metadata like create/access/inode/whatever becomes lost (so not a big lose).';

It softly but clearly clicks or makes a bumping sound about every 3 to 4 seconds. Sometimes more frequently. The sound is clearly audible if you are sitting next to it. Somewhat like if you lightly tapped your knuckle on a flat wooden table. Update: if I lift it up and hold it in the air it basically doesn't make that noise, it only makes the same vibration every 3-4 seconds. So it's that relatively powerful vibration plus the surface it is sitting on which makes that noise. I'm hoping that this doesn't indicate a problem. When I first plugged in the power supply to that HDD it sparked sizeably at the outlet (no noise from the spark). I don't think this is a problem, because when you plug stuff into a wall it sometimes sparks. Also the "box" part of the power cord should handle that. It powered down like 30 minutes into the 1-hour-long smartctl test. SMART Self-test log says that the first Extended offline test Status="Aborted by host". Maybe I can change the power-down settings with hdparm. This matters since I spent hundreds of dollars on this HDD.
