>TQ

Alright. Here goes nothing. I have posted about this character before but I'll try to be objective about it since it isn't my character.

>Dr. Silas Atwater, Clan Kiasyd
>Born poor around Leeds, got into University on a sports scholarship but made a hard pivot into archaeology while there.
>Got married, but had no kids when the Sabbat came by. He got embraced.
>So did his wife, but both of them had their memories altered to think the other died. He was embraced by a Kiasyd, she was embraced by a Harbingers of Skulls.
>I genuinely don't remember his embrace date, it kept changing. I think it was somewhere in the interwar period?
>He defected to the Camarilla as soon as he knew what it was, and hid under Mithras's skirt to avoid being ashed for it.
>Went to Washington D.C. (where the game was set) looking into some weird occult stuff.
>Also he knew martial arts and fought exclusively with his fists.
>Kept going off on his own hour-long sidequests, usually trying to stick his nose into whatever fairy stuff he could. (This isn't mockery I swear, it's something the character actually did.)
>Actively avoided Camarilla social stuff because he was embarrassed by some Toreador when he first got to D.C.

Nightmare Mode: He reunited with his wife towards the end of the game, and it was actually handled very well. No rushing into each other's arms and having a freakpire make-out session, it was awkward. Stilted. Their last interaction was agreeing to return to their old house back in England, he dropped her off to get smuggled back into the U.K. and said he'd join her when he was done with business here. As much as the character made me want to tear my hair out playing with him, that ending was actually very well handled. '

>Tell us about your snowflake character
Okay the most special snowflake character i ever played

remember that one loresheet in v5 that basicly allowed you to play tremere salubri fusion? way way back in a dark age game i played what was basically a unholy tremere lasombra fusion

the story was that my character as a former tremere mage who traveled to venice before the whole house got turned into vampires, hit it off romantically with a lasombra vampire and got fascinated with the abyss, got ghouled, but managed to flee one night as to not get embraced... only to be embraced in the next tremere chantry anyway which pissed off the lasombra so much that he demanded the right to adopt my character which the prince granted

according to my st back then this was enough to take the aditional discipline merit with obtenerbration, and the well adopted into grace merit and because i still needed to get points to take those merits i took the aditional clan weakness flaw with the lasombra flaw to stay on brand

so what we had was a tremere with obtenerbration who most people didn't even know was a tremere and i also got abyss mysticism thrown in by my st despite not even asking for it

the character however was a pain to play because i couldn't handel spying on the lasombra for the tremere, spying on the city for the lasombra while playing the main story with the coterie which was about the giovanni taking over venice

for some reason i don't quite get however the rest of my group really really likes the character and she has made cameos as a npc in other chronicles, one of which i wasn't even a player in'

Don't remember that one. Care to remind?
>who can't get rid of the Sabbat.
The Sabbat has (had?) an Embassy in Paris. For most of Villon's reign, it wasn't seen (or at least presented) as a problem to be dealt with, funnily enough.
One might say hubris at its finest... or was it?

That said, I agree, "Anarch is just a phase" is in and off itself a rather shallow sentiment. I love how Brel's mocking it in "Les Bourgeois".

>>.92574543
Always bothered me all the knowledge Setites are supposed to have that isn't allowed to travel outside the strongholds of the clan.
One has to assume the existence of "unliving clan treasures", members that are old, powerful but basically glorified prisonners of the clan, who possess tremendous out of clan and clan-specific knowledge in thaumaturgy and necromancy among others, and whose existence is justified by their capacity to teach, so that the clan may trade.
Always wanted to make a "liaison" character - one that has to go outside to bring/trade the goods and as such needs to know just enough to be able to make the trades, but no so much yet that he has to be kept in check in a very nice freely offered stronghold haven (not yet at least).'

Talking of that, V5 with its Ministry (well it's global, but the Ministry formulates and advocates it, so they make for an easy target) of elders talking through their blood could open some interesting power-gamer venues. Suddenly old "forgotten" powers are popping up in young clan members that aren't being taught by a tutor, and it becomes a problem to be dealt with by those that want the knowledge to remain strictly esoteric.

But letting both Anarchs and Sabbat have an actual territorial hold on your Domain as a European Prince is a massive L, plus according to Victorian Age Vampire, Villon was maybe fucking Vykos and possibly not even realizing it.

Villon's just one of those canon characters that annoys me, he's let every single possible threat into his city and somehow hasn't been deposed/destroyed yet. He strikes me as a massive incompetent. Unlikely. Generation has a universal origin since otherwise some Clans would have significantly lower Generation on average than others. Even if they don't talk about it, there are vampires still around today who were Embraced by people who knew Caine, and their childer are still around too, and yet there isn't provided any credible alternative to their origin. M5 and Wr5 are two splats I am terrified about. Part of what made Mage so beloved was the change in how they portrayed the Technocracy and with Paradox's handling of all antagonist factions being "you can't play this anymore" I worry we'll never get to play with our Void Engineer Space Marines again.
Wraith 5e worries me for different reasons. As jank as that game could be, the writing for it always gave me the impression that the writers really cared about it and loved it. White Wolf managed to write a really, really good book about the Holocaust of all things and treated the subject matter with a care and grace that I don't think we ever really saw with any other splat. Paradox playing around with the underworld makes me terrified we'll either get the most watered down take possible, OR it'll go full "cult of fenris are all werewolf nazis now" and write something so braindead that it sinks the brand again for decades.'

I think that in comparison to a lot of other franchises, VTM has had a harder time staying relevant. In part I think that's because honest to God the last mainstream video game that garnered any sort of attention came out 20 years ago.
And you can say what you want about video games, but the video games help make the series a lot more relevant. There are now countless people running D&D sessions because they found out about D&D through baldur's Gate 3.
Warhammer 40K, Cthulhu, d&d and even pathfinder have had games and other forms of media to help renew interest in the series. VtM has had a few offshoots that have mainly been short visual novels that get little to no attention from the mainstream and a kinda shitty RPG that came out a bit ago.
Unfortunately with bloodlines 2 looking like dishonored 3 and not bloodlines 2, it's probably not gonna get relevant again'

'First attempt at creating a Discipline for Calnbook: Caitiff, the Nebulation Discipline from VtM Bloodlines expanded out to five dots. I have never done anything remotely like this before so I have no idea whether or not it's balanced.

- First dot is basically just a boost to stealth and a limited ability to move through narrow spaces.
- Second dot is more or less literally Fog Cloud from D&D
- Third dot allows a vampire to immobilize and silence a target and, if they need to breathe, choke them. It lasts for only 1 turn.
- Fourth dot is verbatim copied from Mist Form (Protean 5). Couldn't think of anything to change and it felt weird not to have the ability to actually assume a misty form in this Discipline. I am wide open to suggestions here.
- Fifth dot allows the user to summon a fog cloud that can envelop a whole city, which is in-line with what some of the fifth ranks in Koldunic Sorcery can do, except those usually allow for inflicting large amounts of damage via earthquakes or lightning storms; this just blocks vision, lets the vampire walk/run (but not attack) faster, and slightly reduces damage from fire and sunlight to all vampires (not just the user) in the area.

Thoughts? Wide open to suggestions, especially for the 4-dot power.'

There is some of that. Most of the V5 player base looks at the KJ and Liabon the same way the V20 one looks at the Gypsy book. It wasn't something made out of malice but it still sounds bad.
In terms of rules it's just that other versions of the game have done some stuff better like CofD combat styles or V5 rules for Influence.

I originally had exactly that - you activate Fog Cloud but spend a blood point (along with the willpower point) to make it bewildering as well as occluding. However it seemed strange to have a Discipline that hitherto had been focused on actual, physical fog to suddenly veer into mental effects.

I suppose I could knock out vaporous form and bring back the bewildering fog for the 4th level power, but…

It doesn't help that the White Wolf merger and the never-released MMO was basically spectacular brand suicide. It's kinda depressing, nothing else really stepped in to take its place - the Onyx Path stuff sure tried, but was never big enough to find the foothold, and arguably diluted the brand more when it was all also called WoD - and now this whole TTRPG ecosystem has risen up that's very oriented around the style of game and style of play emblematic of D&D, so WoD is a hard sell. Requiem LARP, new player comes into build a Gangrel. Darkfyre Phoenix, on a quest for vengeance against the VII for killing his beloved Daeva girlfriend Blaze Phoenix. The ST apparently talked him off the ledge and, though he wouldn't ever use a non-edgelord name, they did talk him into a 'normalish' character concept of a wandering monk type hunting for the killers and interacting with Kindred society to do so. Guy apparently came to three sessions; first and second as character ,third with girlfriend in tow and they wanted to do Weird Creepy Shit with her rescue. They were denied, and never came back. To make matters funnier, that was the dude's legal name, as he'd had it changed.'

Looks wise that means that they always look like however they decide to manifest, within the confines of their Title(s). If they have none, then they are as dead and destroyed as a Gentry can be. However all their former Titles are still "them" in a way, so if one of the Titles they held at some point in time is abandoned, lost, or otherwise unclaimed, they can return through that.

CCP fumbled hard by hoarding the license for the MMO that didn't even get made, the whole IP could have been revitalized if they let other devs go buckwild on the IP.

Paradox theoretically has the better model of how to handle vidya, but in practice it's been a failure. They haven't attracted much talent, and I think it's for two reasons.

One, the WoD IP comes with a lot of baggage and not a lot of benefit. Perverts, weird LARP groups that embodied every negative stereotype about goths in one, and even an actual murder that can be tied to the IP. And of course like anything licensed the IP holder gets a cut. What you get for making WoD game is a bunch of names that oldfags and some terminally online loreheads will enjoy seeing, as well as the feeling of being part of a larger universe. These are good, but the cons far outweigh the pros, especially when you consider that WoD can't really copyright the stuff people enjoy about it besides names. You can't copyright vampires that have a secret society puppeteering things from the shadows. You can't copyright magitech glowies. So if I want to make an urban fantasy game, there's a lot of reason to make my own setting instead. Which isn't helped by

Two, Paradox's terms for making a WoD game are restrictive. If you're an inexperienced indie, get fucked, you have to put it on Itch.Io only, and it must be WoD5. I can't know the terms of the studio level deals, but I'm pretty sure they're also WoD5 only, with Earthblood only getting away with being W20 because of how long ago production started. So you as the developer are stuck with the smallest and least developed version of the setting, that is very polarizing among the fanbase you want to court.

It's just not a good deal for any Dev. I actually wanted to make a Hunter game of my dreams with some friends, but seeing the terms made me reconsider and realize it gains very little as an artistic endeavor and frankly, doesn't even make good business sense.'

This is something I’ve discussed with my table before. Is the True Fae truly their Title? What happens if another Fae steals another Fae’s Title? Is it the same Fae, in a sense?

The schizophrenic nature of how “conscious” or identity-aware a True Fae is can be a maddening topic. I’ve had players who just assumed the Fae aren’t actually conscious beings, just infighting narratives that have a hyper-sophisticated background to support them, in the form of the Wyrd. The Wyrd can inspire itself and make more stories / Titles. They aren’t beings more so than “beings”, or “living” manifest ideas/narratives that have dangerously tangible presences to them.

Reviving a True Fae may just mean having a Fae acquire its Title, or story. But even then, you have cases of Fae fighting each other for their stories, implying the Wyrd may as well be a schizophrenic “mind” of sorts itself, having a mental battle. Putting in my two cents here, but I think what really hurt World of Darkness in the ‘90s/2000s when compared to D&D and CoC might go back a bit further than you think. Namely…it ended.

I mean on the one hand, good on White Wolf for not only having a metaplot, but actually advancing it and reaching an end-point with Gehenna, Apocalypse, Ascension, And the Rest. It definitely went a long way towards making the oWoD feel like a living, changing world. And having The End Times actually arrive and play out…like imagine some other setting doing that, like 40K but The Emperor actually wakes back up and duplexes Chaos into submission or something. Asmodeus actually wins the Blood War.

But on the other hand, it ended, and then White Wolf made the attempt to replace all their game lines with more than just a new edition - edition changes happen all the time - but brand-new, ground-up rewritten lore that was in some cases radically different from what had come before. It’s pretty easy to see how they’d lose a huge chunk of their consumer base from that, and I don’t really feel like NWoD ever really caught up to where OWoD was at it’s height. I have nothing to back it up but I know that I, for example, thought that say Vampire the Requiem had some pretty neat ideas, but it just didn’t appeal to me the same way that Masquerade did. In fact I think I recall feeling that Requiem was at once doing too much and too little, but that’s a discussion for another time.

Anyway, point is that while everything you’re talking about definitely played a part in World of Darkness falling by the wayside, I think the inciting incident goes back to 2004.'

As someone who didn't grow up with oWoD, I find that some of the time nWoD does it better, sometimes oWoD does it better.

I think they felt trapped by their own metaplot, and that they needed a hard reset, not just a new edition in order to do all the new ideas they had. Which I think was the wrong choice, but hindsight is 20/20. Making a new edition that was sort of a "soft reboot", with a return to 1e style lack of metaplot could have backfired even harder, or maybe it would have been a good compromise that the old fanbase liked or at least tolerated, while also allowing them to actually change things about the setting they didn't like, and adding their new ideas to the setting without having to destroy everything that came before.

For example, while Masquerade has an undeniable charm to it that even I prefer to Requiem, Masquerade and the whole of oWoD has this problem where there isn't much left a mystery. Every monster has to tie into one splat or another. There are no weird anomalies, only mysteries contained in a splat. What I like a lot about nWoD by comparison is that you can just have more stuff in it. In VTM, you only have Vampires and the region locked Kuei-Jin which were extremely polarizing and mechanically weird. In VTR you have Vampires everywhere, but also a lot of other vampiric undead like Aswang and Jiang-Shi that can interact with Vampires in interesting ways, not just play "fucc u gweilo".

Ultimately, I think the metaplot and looming apocalypse was the original mistake, since it forced them into a corner where they felt like they had to end the setting in order to do anything new.'

They are all of their titles, but also the "player" behind them as their "PC"
>What happens if another Fae steals another Fae’s Title? Is it the same Fae, in a sense?
Unless the Gentry remakes the Title it simply takes a part of itself and puts it in the freshly claimed Title. Think of it like a different actor playing an established role in a tv show. The character stays the same, some quirks and apearances change. If the Gentry remakes the Title then it's a new "person" or "object"

They are, from their perspectice, the only sentient forms of live in existsnce, to them everything else is worth nothing more than a dream. They are concious enough to haggle, bargain, beg, fight, etc., but do so for reasons beyond human understanding or for reasons that seem suicidaly retarded. They just want to be, and to be they need Titles, and in turn the Title determines what the True Fae can and cannot do, allowing them to pass the time, have fun and experience Glamourous existances instead of being all-knowing, all-encompassing and without a way to exist as """"individuals"""".

>Reviving a True Fae may just mean having a Fae acquire its Title, or story. But even then, you have cases of Fae fighting each other for their stories, implying the Wyrd may as well be a schizophrenic “mind” of sorts itself, having a mental battle.

Cont.
That's all existance and reality boils down to the Gentry. A game to pass the time, get angry, have fun, enjoy the moment, etc. Like how we play RPGs to do things we otherwise couldn't or play catan / monopoly because we enjoy the anger ensuing from those games. Again, from their point of view, everything that is not Gentry (or an Entitled Changeling) is just as real as a dream is to us.
They are maybe the worst antagonist to fight because they don't realy care about winning or losing, just that they have fun while doing so. And unlike the G-M, elder vampires, etc., nothing realy matters to them as they only care about their Titles, which are very difficult to destroy and only a retard would want to destroy. Like sauron if he could just make another one ring after his defeat.

>>92582398
>Not unlike the Supernal or the God-Machine, which aren’t explicit entities either, more so than occult infrastructure.
I like to think of the True Fae as part of the actual out-of-the-game players that sit on your table and are hideous meta gamers only interested in having a good time. As in, they are actual players in a meta sense with their Titles as PCs.
Unlike the G-M they realy have a clear higher goal and don't even hide it. Get more titles and win. That's it.
To us it might seem like a pointless game as there are infinite possible titles, but the Gentry are also infinite, so them getting an "archievement" just to brag and smugly ascending is very much in character to them.
The better comparison would be the Wyrd, as that is the force most interested in stories being entertaining. Gentry just want to have fun and play their game of immortals'

My friends exclusively run it because 1. it's the newest VtM and old = clunky and outdated, and 2. there's an app for making characters, which is admittedly nice to use. No idea what it does differently, mostly because I've never had the chance to play any other edition but also because we barely used any rules but hunger and skill rolls. Quite frankly v20 is the same theater kid bullshit but I think it's infinitely more preferable just because it embraces the kitsch of a roleplaying game where you play a brooding edgelord vampire. Mechanically the only thing that keeps me from v5 is the genocide enacted upon unique disciplines in favor of combo disciplines, something that was completely unnecessary.

>b-b-b-but powergamers!!!
If you're powergaming at VtM not only are you a fucking retard you're someone who wouldn't enjoy VtM in the first place. VtM and the ST system were designed around drama, without any actual drama you don't have a chronicle. if one of your players is powergaming, grow a fucking pair and tell him to kill himself, it's really that easy.'

In V5, you get one power per dot; the various different powers are choices you can make when you buy a dot. The design is there to prevent samey characters, or allow people to take stuff for flavor or to take things that aren't Always Optimization Based. You don't have the option to purchase powers again, though you can take lower-level powers as higher-level dots, which can be good as most things scale with your Discipline dots.'

Tristan was embraced by one of the Seven but his sire was reluctant to have his Childe diablerize him as this was during the Dark Ages & shit was hard on Clan Salubri, before anything could really be done they became separated. He still fell in with the Tzimisce against the Tremere but the one who taught him Vicissitude was his lover instead, they still talk occasionally. Still killed & replaced a newly turned Tremere in the city.

That's not how it works. It's a merit. The layout can be confusing, but each level is distinct and self-contained. You can buy only the 4th if wanted. It cost 4 freebie point, which is the main if not only way you can pay for it, at charatcter creation.

I've ran it two times over twenty years (three if you only count the Last Supper which I once ran with 13PCs and three DMs). Some of my best memories with the game. The Last Supper is a great introduction. Short and dense, but can be a very intense with the right crowd. Nuova Malattia, if players can stomach the bait & switch is an incredible skeleton of a campaign that is the exact contrary, very spread out and diffuse. Needs a lot of work - so many NPCs to create to pull it off. The two others are rather mediocre but doing the job between intro and conclusion. I remember some funky mistakes (the Thames flowing backwards if I'm not mistaked).

Boarding School (great territory for a vampire; dangerous material depending on players), local neighbourhood society with an unusual but very unrelated-to-vampirism theme ("The Society for the Protection of Dromedary"), a Salon with local intellectuals, local gang with an esoteric twist, "tupperware parties", truck food that has a developed a recurring crowd and hides something more sinister...

This is same as when people want to force religious dogmas on other people who aren't from that religion at all. I get it's a taboo for them, so being respectful when you are in their presence is neat and good.

But why should other people abide to their dogmas? Hell, I don't even know which native-american people has the belief of Wendigo. I doubt I'll find one of those people joining my games.

This came up when I was researching the True Believer Caitiff (which was actually my favorite of the ones I’ve made - it was fun to make the high-humanity born-again religious vampire but from a Muslim rather than Christian angle like usual). The short version is that Islam has a recurring theme for all of their rules: if following the rules would cause you undue pain or hardship or even kill you, then you are free to ignore them. God understands.

- You can hide that you’re Muslim (even faking the worship of other gods) if you’re some place where being Muslim openly might get you hurt or killed.
- You aren’t expected to undertake the Hajj if you’re not financially or physically able to do it.
- Zakat charity isn’t expected of the poor either - they can give Zakat by being kind and courteous to others, by doing good deeds when possible, rather than giving actual money.
- If you’re diabetic or injured or menstruating or pregnant or otherwise put in danger by fasting, then you don’t have to fast during Ramadan.
- If you miss a daily prayer, just make it up the following day by doing the prayer you missed twice.

Islam is unusual among religions in that it is *explicit* that every single one of its rules is secondary to your health and well-being. *God understands*.

In the case of vampires, the very verse you posted says:

>But if someone is compelled by necessity—neither driven by desire nor exceeding immediate need—then surely your Lord is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

A vampire literally can’t subsist on anything but blood. They are compelled by necessity. So even though blood is ordinarily haram and najis, God understands, and won’t expect the vampire to abstain entirely, nor risk frenzy. Or at least that’s how a vampire might justify it.'
