My first battle in the HG2 tourney.
I had a relatively easy time since my opponent used a big bazooka. This game only uses hitscan for energy weapons, so rockets are relatively easy to dodge (and my Jager is built for speed).
My next match is against a guy who has deeper understanding of the game's [boilerplate physics], aka a speedrunner. So I wonder how that one's gonna go'

Does remind me a bit of the Assassin from Battletech, which is noted as having such a cramped cockpit that pilots will develop back problems if they pilot it for too long. I think the only mech with a smaller cockpit in Battletech would be the Stinger, which has such a small head that the pilot is actually standing in the torso and practically wearing the head like a helmet.'

I use to share a HG2 patch on places like /v/ that I think the repack integrated, dgVoodoo helps a lot but there's been cases from myself where the game would bug the fuck out on menu options or the white cutscene issue on Win10. HG2 is just a picky prick, wish Activision would dump some source code. But yeah if that anon hasn't tried yet then the Repack is where you begin if there's issues.'

Yes, and yes. Mech combat is really good, building the mechs is fun and flexible, and a lot of the crunch is setting agnostic so you can flavor space/colonies/planets however you choose. Only real weakness is the pilot mechanics are near nonexistent so things are pretty much freeform RP with light dice rolls if the situation calls for anything other than having a mech punch another mech.'

my group ran it for about 6-8 months last year. one of the systems strongest features is that it is based off of the dungeons and dragons rules, so its very easy to get into for groups that arent hardcore mech enthusiasts, you're basically playing a mech flavored DnD character

the RP mechanics are a bit lacking but its actually not too bad if you take advantage of the "create your own" part of the skill triggers instead of just using their pregenerated list.

the talents system is robust and build defining but easy to use. the mechs offer a lot of flexibility in build variety and some mechanical depth regarding damage and repairs without ever getting bogged down in bean counting or over-simulation. there is a decent selection of encounter variety and prebuilt enemy variety and the GM can also make custom mechs using the player mech rules pretty easily for recurring/boss encounters. hacking is handled in a very streamlined and concise way, functionally filling a role similar to spells, and the game doesnt really have a lot of special attacks, just different weapons and a flexible action economy that balances damage output with heat

the setting, if you want to use it, is a kitchen sink setting, with everything from space cowboys and truckers, shadowy mega corps, a galactic federation, stargates, dune style noble houses and peasant revolts, extradimensional entities and runaway AI. everything. it does stay pretty light on aliens though so if you're looking for a mass effect style gallery of aliens you will need to invent your own.

where the game is most lacking we found was specifically out of mech combat. out of mech RP? not that big of a problem, but out of mech combat was very rules light and hyper lethal. everyone is basically 1 shot. i suppose in a way thats realistic, how many people can realistically survive being shot by a rifle? but it didnt make for good gameplay. the mechs are definitely the star of the show'

Overall, it's not very intuitive to try to do two systems at once, so i'd recommend against it.
I would instead recommend that you go for a system that tries to treat the pilot-scale side of things decently well, and to that end you should check out Mecha Hack if you don't mind it being rules-light. ChromeStrike also has pilot-scale, but I don't know if it's sufficient or not.
Mekton is another one to look at; you can do a lot with that system and i've heard that it's pretty good if you like crunchier stuff, but I don't know if it has pilot-scale or not. I think it does. I'm sure you can make ship-type vehicles, as well, if that tickles your fancy.'
