GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by those who pay attention to file extensions.
Never post direct links to the archive anywhere.

If you're wondering where to start:
The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

What actually got called 'war-hammers' would generally be basically picks, often with a hammer head (LTC2) opposite the spiky bit.
Short-handled metal-head mallets / mini-mauls (the sort of thing that gets portrayed in fantasy art) are best represented as maces. They might have a different name, but it's an angular mass of metal (or sometimes stone, or wood held together with bands of metal) on the end of a stick, so the effects are going to be basically identical. Yeah, I added the optional rule to allow for more differentiation between casters. The original goal was just to get a fast, simple way to make magic into a viable option for total GURPS newbies in a rules-light introductory game, and I think it does well in that regard, but for ongoing play it's much more flavorful if specific characters are specializing into specific types of spells.

You can make 'lasers' which generate coherent ionising radiation (GURPS calls them x-ray
and gamma-ray lasers, sometimes they are known as XASERS or GRASERS). Making someone homosexual is probably a bit more complicated than just fucking up their genetics (although that could explain part of it). Targeting organs which manage hormones might have a chance (probably more effective in some species than others, best bet for humans might be to turn offspring gay by screwing with pregnant mother's organs), and extremely subtle brain surgery by someone with very high TL neuroscience could plausibly change pretty much any aspect of your personality. Such brain surgery could maybe be carried out with some kind of coherent radiation beam, so I guess you could class that a laser which changes people's behaviour. As a power, probably something like 1 point burning attack (armour divisor 10, radiation).
>>92618445

There's a bunch of different explanations, none of which really seem to explain the phenomenon well by themselves.
If it's a contagious disease, how does it affect so many different species? Why has nobody identified the pathogen?
If it's cultural, how come it affects different species? If it isn't cultural, how come it is more common is some cultures than others?
If it's hereditary, why isn't it incredibly rare given the massive impact on fertility? Why is it becoming more common, even though gay fertility is being reduced by acceptance of homosexual lifestyles? Why can nobody find genes associated with it?
If it's an eusocial adaptation (gay-uncle theory) why does it do such a shit job? Why does it appear in species without group child-rearing?
If it's a trauma-reaction from childhood abuse, why is more common in less abusive cultures?
If it's chemical (hormonal) why is there no detectable difference in body chemistry?
If it's just mutational load, why are gays not generally low-IQ, stunted-growth fuckups?
If it's just the case that directing instincts at a specific sex is difficult and easily goes wrong, why aren't bisexuals orders of magnitude more common than exclusive homosexuals and why aren't the latter extremely rare? Why doesn't it affect generally fucked-up (high mutational load, mentally retarded) people more?'

>Is it always just GM fiat after something like a Fright Check?
In the base system, pretty much yes. The fright check table has results which give you disadvantages, and the GM picks something suitable for you depending on the source of the trauma and the genre. Horror has some alternative rules, including better-defined lists of disadvantages beyond the simple quirk / delusion / phobia / other mental disadvantage from the FCT, but there's still a lot of GM choice. Mad as Bones in Pyramid 3/103 has a 'mental hit points' system similar to Call of Cthulhu's, but the disadvantages you get from that are even more poorly defined. Likewise, the Shocking Revelations table from Steampunk 1 can give you permanent disadvantages, but most of them are chosen by the GM.
Of course, you can always start a character with suitable disadvantages explained by trauma in their back-story. This is probably more common than trauma in play.'

For all you know homosexuality might be far more common in super-repressive Islamic countries, it's just they know they'll be taught to fly off the top of tall buildings if they ever dare express it.

According to PEW only 19% of bi's are out to all of their friends and family, so it's just likely that since it's super easy to pass as straight (and why not, they're still attracted tot he opposite sex), most do.

Generally speaking SWAT are elite police, who will be more skilled than average infantrymen (who are generally mediocre members of the armed forces; the good ones will be able to get into something more prestigious). Police in general often have more training than soldiers (indeed, a good proportion of them are ex-soldiers), are older, and have a lot more hands-on experience of 'adventure' situations. In a straight-up firefight, soldiers might come off better, but for most other skills the cops will be superior. GURPS SWAT (for third edition) has what looks like a fairly plausible template. Unfortunately, I don't think there is an equivalent 'typical grunt' template to compare it to, but I'm confident most SWAT-equivalent units will have members with higher average points totals than any regular infantry, and possibly even moderately 'elite' forces like RM commandos, US army rangers, etc.'

The difference between 'Heir to Status 4, counts as status 2 for now [10]' and 'actually just Status 2 [10]' seems somewhat academic. Just figure out an appropriate status level (typically one or two below the family head, but bottoming out around Status 2 for all nobility) and take that, with enough of it as 'potential advantage' to get you where you need to go on inheritance.
Social Regard is very much what you have instead of Status when you get treated like a high-status person even though you technically aren't. It isn't appropriate for actual social elites.
Courtesy Status is also not appropriate. Indeed, this is almost the opposite case; you don't have a formal title, but you are still an important person. Courtesy Status is like when the 'king' of some stone-age primitives gets called 'your majesty' by the technologically superior empire who just colonized his territory. Everyone knows he isn't really on the same level as Queen Victoria or whoever, but there's a level of respect due to any 'monarch', no matter how petty.'

WW2 puts a rifleman at 50 points. No idea if that is meant to be 'realistic average' in the same way the SWAT template is, nor whether modern training would be significantly better, but it 'feels' plausible.
For comparison, GURPS Cops gives a beat cop 45 points, a detective or federal agent 55, and a SWAT officer 110. The elite soldiers in Special Ops range from 115 (USMC force recon) to 200+ (SEAL).'

Unhealing (Partial) is typically sidestepped by putting your character in environments where they can heal rather than taking specific actions. Dunking the corpse in a vat of slaughtered animals would trigger his healing.

Now if you did want the healing to only trigger while specifically eating (or, more practically, for X hours after eating) raw and fresh meat, you could theoretically activate it through finely mincing the meat into basically a slurry and feeding it to him, maybe thinning it with some water (or more blood) to help it go down. Unconscious people still have swallow reflexes, and with Unkillable 2 that reflex will probably also extend to "dead" as well (maybe, depends on the setting and specifics). Alternatively, just find a healer with enough skill to win the QC despite the magic resistance. Ceremonial casting with a handful of competent clerics could probably manage it, since excess energy translates into a skill bonus. It'd be a slow process, but it would eventually get the character back up to positive HP.'

It would make more sense to simply give them all some level of Status slightly below that of the patriarch. Only use the weirder advantages where the obvious one doesn't work.
In more detail:
>Courtesy Status for the spouse
Only if they are a commoner or similar 'outsider' who only has nominal status due to their marriage. If you've got wealth, titles, and powerful family connections, you've got actual Status, possibly tempered by Social Stigma.
>Heir to the oldest son
This is fine, but he may need some extra Status of his own (e.g. he could have Status 3 and be heir to a Status 4 title, with Status 2 of his own as a minor noble and 2 in Heir)
>Status from Wealth to younger sons
Could work, but status and wealth
are often a bit 'out of sync' among nobles. The son of an impoverished duke would generally be higher status than the son of a rich count.
>Social Regard to the daughters and perhaps the retired patriarch
It's possible they could have social regard (even if young women and old men don't have it in general, nobility often 'amplifies' the usual level of respect shown to protected classes), but they will also have Status.'

This really isn't how aristocracy works. Having connections is helpful, but just being noble / royalty in a feudal / aristocratic society is a huge fucking deal no matter how much your family fail to assist you, what hard times they have fallen on, or how bad their reputation is. Low tech, martial arts, and maybe fantasy should be good for most settings.
Things get hairy with adapting your magic system. GURPS Magic is like D&D in that it has a massive collection of spells but it functions quite differently than D&D. The Thaumatology book has some more magic alternatives. If you really want to emulate D&D's Vancian magic system, Eggplant has put work into that using GURPS' Sorcery system.
Try to think about how magic should be usable and what you want it to do.'

Gonna assume the basic book is necessary. I wanted my magic to be a bit more involved instead of the 5e style of "I cast spell and negate half the encounter"'

NTA, but the 4e Basic Set book has a lot of spells and the Magic book even more. GURPS spellcasting is a lot less "powerful" than D&D because you have to use fatigue points or cast directly from your hit points if you're exhausted.'

I don't remember anything as gamebreaking as the standard xD&D stuff, and since you're casting from FP (equal to your Health stat, so about 10 or thereabouts). Assuming a HT of 10, if you cast a max power Fireball (3 FP, concentrate for 3 rounds, 3d damage) you're already out of one third of your fatigue points.'

Not that I can find. Closest thing seems to be pistol stocks; make them a combination gadget with some grips, muzzle weight, accessory rails, etc. and you've effectively got the same thing.'

Way more frequent in terms of actual spells vs spell slots, since you get back 1/10 of your FP per 10 minutes (or 5 or 2 minutes, if you've got the right spells/skills known), but by the same token, usually less game-changing - spells have much smaller ranges, and hitting multiple targets is generally far more difficult.'
