Welcome to /usgen/
It is dedicated to discussing universal TTRPG system that are to small to have its own general.

/usgen/ rules:
1. We discuss only universal systems and related settings, which didn't have its own general. (So no D&D and no GURPS)
2. If you talk about specific system write its name down to avoid confusion.
3. Player-made settings for existing systems are encouraged.
4. We only discuss universal systems that were published. So ask about your "WIP system".
5. Try to limit off-topic discussions to minimum.

Thread question: Do you own any universal systems book? If yes, tell us which one.'

Own everything made for Genesys, a large amount of Savage Worlds (Core books and tools, everything Pathfinder, all the SWADE stuff for RIFTS and Dead Lands) got a bunch of FATE and a smattering of GURPS.

In terms of the systems I like and use among what I have?
Savage Worlds gets the most use because I got enough content to plug and play stuff easy AND my group is familiar with it.
Genesys is a close second, would probably be the number one but half the group won’t touch it because of proprietary dice. Those that do play it agree it is the best all-rounder system.
GURPS is shit. Too convoluted for what amounts to a basic bitch system and FATE is just way too loose.'

That says that if there's no overall winner, then re-roll the contest according to the established rules. The GM is encouraged to come up with an explanation as to why neither side succeeded; due to the sheer number and variety of potential skill combinations and possible circumstances in an individual contest it would be impossible to provide an exhaustive and comprehensive list of outcomes.
It does not say you should make up a new rule on the spot. The GM describing the situation after the results of die rolls, even if the status quo is unchanged, is a common part of role-playing games (as anyone who plays those games knows).'

>>92637179
FUDGE has two types of actions: Opposed and unopposed. Unopposed actions are used in situations where an outcome of an action is not affected by other characters actions. You just roll against a difficulty and read the dice. Opposed actions are actions where the outcome is effected by another party such as a duel. In such a case a relative degree determines how well you did compared to another character. It's expressed in levels, like you get a good result and your opponent gets mediocre, than your two levels higher from your perspective and he's two levels lower from his.

>Yes but what kind of saves are characters supposed to have, and what are their names?
You don't need "saves". The type of danger and how your players attempt to survive it give you all the information you need. For example, to avoid a dragon's fire by ducking behind cover a character would need to be fast. Slamming a heavy door shut to block the fire would require strength. You'll always have some attribute that covers these situations in your game. What are you worried about? That you're gonna forget an entire category of attributes? It's not happening.

>>92638768
>So am I supposed to invent my own attribute that PCs should use to resist poison gas, for instance?
In this instance you can just use Scale. Poison gases are rated dosage per body weight needed to for a mortality of half, anyway. Everyone has a Scale implicitly, you don't need to think up an attribute to roll against poison gas. Of course, you can have constitution as an attribute, hold breath as a skill (ascetics could also be used), or resistant to poison as a gift if you want to. You can even give a +1 for being ex-military and recognizing the smell, no formal levels needed.'

There are two basic advantages of using universal systems over specialized ones.

1. If your players learn one set of rules, you can use then fore few campaigns without needing to spend time on explaining rules.
2. Most of universal systems are really easy to homebrew.

This cuts to a central misconception about universal systems I see posted on /tg/ from time to time. There's an idea some people have that universal/setting-agnostic systems are "jacks of all trades, masters of none." This isn't true. They're still complete games, and have things that they're good at and things that they're bad at, just like any other system. For example, I'd use Cortex (a universal system) for a superhero game over any superhero system I've come across. It just happens to be really good at that kind of game. I would not use Cortex for a survival-themed game, even though it could be configured to play one--it's just not as good at that as other systems are. Just like setting-specific systems, setting-agnostic systems have strengths and weaknesses that lend them towards being used in certain kinds of games. Sometimes they're better at a particular kind of game than many other options for that kind of game could be, even if those other options are specifically for that kind of game.'

Yeah. I find the "universal" label a bit shit because there's not a universal system, but there are systems good for running specific styles/genres/etc.

What you choose to model, what level of detail, what terms you use, what you use to define a character - those are all important things. Cortex is my go-to for things that are a bit cartoony or comicbook, or have that "unreal" tone. Heck, I've run games I could only talk about on >>>/mlp/ by hacking cortex drama (cut out the six "drives" for a PC, replace them with six important terms from the show I cannot name). Could I in theory have made that a gurps game? Yes. Would it have had the same tone? No, because the mechanics influence tone, the set of things you put in front of players influence what they will think of and how they'll interact with the game.

I do like tearing generic/universal systems apart and seeing what makes them tick, but I also think that renaming things and changing how the game is presented in the form of character sheets and rules rundowns for players can REALLY help to get players on the right page. Sometimes all it takes is changing what you call the stats to change how players see something.

I have no idea where I'm going with this comment either, just that "universal" is the downfall word here.'

Bought the core book and one of the generic supplements.

Never see anyone talk about it (I guess if you like the mechanics most would just play Numenera or some shit).

But considering only our perma dm has more than a couple of braincells to rub together, the fact once my friends make a character I can dm one shots off the seat of my pants is nice. A good chance to give perma dm to play for once. Literally everything can be simplified down to a 1 to 10 difficulty and having the players chuck a d20 at it.'

Good posts. As a Genesys enjoyer, I'd never use it for a gritty/grounded game (in any genre) because it's pretty hard for a PC to actually die unless they're fighting something way stronger than them; serious damage to PCs usually takes the form of critical injuries, which range from short term injuries (concussions, sprains, etc.) to permanent disfigurement/maiming. But I'd happily run a D&D-esque game in Genesys, even though D&D already exists, because I like Genesys more.'

I really should get around to actually trying genesys at some point. Can you tell me, as a genjoyer, whether the star wars force die adds/detracts/etc? The Force Die has two major uses in SWRPG:
1. At the beginning of the session, every player rolls it once, and the resulting light and dark points form the pool of story points. Genesys replaces this with "players and GM each get one story point per player," which is simpler. I don't think the SWRPG method is superior.
2. Using the Force often requires rolling the Force Die. Depending on the setting, this mechanic could be used for some magic that swings between positive and negative (in some way), but I've never felt that was necessary.'

Porting to other genres is the meaning of multigenre/generic. Rules for games are basically something like chargen mechanism + core action resolution mechanism + other core mechanisms (sight, movement, encumbrance, etc.) + genre specific mechanisms, the last of which is how the game is ported to various genres.

The WEG d6 System started as Ghostbusters, was ported to Star Wars, then became a generic system and it works well in all those roles. It started as supernatural comedy where it did well but was underappreciated, moved to space fantasy where it was very popular despite originating as a different genre, and is now fantasy, sci fi x2 (one generic space, one separate game with a defined setting), superheroes and adventure x2 (one generic adventure, one dark fantasy).

GURPS itself, which many people think of as the quintessential generic rpg especially because it has generic in its name, started off as port of a fantasy rpg. When you use GURPS for Transhuman Space you have to exclude the magic rules which are part of the basic set.

Savage Worlds started as a horror western.

Since other multigenre systems started as unigenre so there's no reason that Cepheus Engine and incarnations of d20 starting as fantasy and scifi can't be generic especially given that they have been successfully applied to multiple genres.'

>Can you tell me, as a genjoyer, whether the star wars force die adds/detracts/etc? Is it worth adding that or something like it to other games?
The dice was used for force rolls and setting up initial story points. Both you can do without in Genesys as the developers worked around it. If you ever come across some, get them as they are great little yes/no dice that are asymmetrical (more faces are no BUT the yes faces tend to be doubles).'

Gurps being litigious about muh rules is retarded. It doesn't even make Steve Jackson Games very much money. Nobody is going to license Gurps for their own game because it isn't popular.
Hero Games is even worse because they don't even release occasional splats like Gurps does. If you want your game to be popular you've go to do something besides sit on the ip waiting for it to become popular again. Unpaid enthusiasts who shill for free on /tg/ doesn't cut it.'

What do you mean by doing gear well? Do you want a long and detailed list of possible gear? Most universal systems drop that because it will never be comprehensive enough. Universal or not, I don't think there's a single system with list of far future dentist's tools. Maid RPG has a long list of different items, with costumes as a subcategory. Is that what you're looking for? There's still no dentist's tools.'

Totally agree. I think the latest gengen has already slipped out of the archive so backups will be needed to get the OP recovered.
I was thinking the /usgen/ OP could have an obvious into blurb, then list a bunch of pastebins/rentry links, each game group takes care of its own link.'

I suppose it could use more talents and I prefer being able to improve characteristics besides only during character creation, but it is still the most fun system of dice rolling that I have used. Also it is hard for characters to die, but you can have house rules to circumvent that.'
