>tried to explain to him how boats had these triangle sails, which allowed them to even sail almost directly against the wind, but he told me I am insane for thinking that

>keeps trying to steal our provisions
>is so petty and declared despite going on an expedition to an island with the expressed purpose to stay there for multiple days, he wanted our food to be kept on our boat and only relented when we threatened to go back to the ship

>our threats against NPCs never work, they are seemingly connected to an NPC hivemind and play hardcore game theory, where they know long-term the players lose if they kill NPCs
>keeps giving us a reason to hate NPCs, who would otherwise help us, like a noble lady settled her debt with us with the information that another rich noble lady has a mansion in the countryside with treasure and we can rob her, if we give the other lady half of it, the mansion was extremely well guarded and we almost all died and swore revenge (she pretends this is a reasonable deal and we are unreasonable)

>the bureaucracy of the enemy state we are fighting is working extremely well, because it turns out we are basically the only pirates in the entire sea, which makes the whole premise of the campaign kinda stupid and implies our characters are really retarded for deciding to go here

Why can’t he just bend the setting a little to make us look more reasonable? Isn’t this basically a collaborative story development? Why is he trying to make our characters into retards?'

time to go offroad
collaborate with other players, when GM isn't around, to mutiny
start doing stupid shit, raid farms for provisions, perform bizarre humiliation on defeated foes, steal every set of panties along the coastline and make a giant flag or sail out of them
when the bounty on your party gets sufficiently high, betray the group, assume another identity and live in luxury

Seems like a good idea. Logistics, mapping, island adventures. Players need to be invested, otherwise it turns into a floating box that opens to encounters, no different to a railroad. Naval combat does not mesh with a D&D system at all. Boarding actions? Wall of Fire on the enemy deck. Long range engagement? Now I have to calculate how many planks get scuttled by Warp Wood and how that effects the speed of the ship and how fast it will sink. Warp wood not enough? There's a whole roster of niggling spells between 1st and 4th level that I'd have to adjudicate on the fly. Sea Monster attacks? Again, they're either fodder or they play smart and sabotage the ship, stranding the players in the open ocean. On ship intrigue? Oh sorry, every personal portal was either glyph warded or fire trapped. You bet your ass the players were running detection spells on all the crew and cargo simply because a day of uninterrupted travel would not be wasted.

I've had similar issues with sci fi games where players have a starship.

It's probably best to sit down and chat with the group before starting a campaign. Before even rolling for characters. Everyone needs to be on board.'

Back when Starcraft was huge, in 2014, a well known e-celeb in the starcraft scene randomly decided to play one of these nerd games. Dungeons & Dragons. Neal, Koibu, was also a Starcraft nerd and was the first guy who replied. That is how Rollplay Solumn happened. I basically introduced the Starcraft audience to DnD. It had high production quality, it was all done virtually. Itmejp basically was the first guy to do it in this way. He inspired many other ecelebs to come on later as guests or do their own show. Koibu was able to become a professional DM after this. The game world he came up with for the first Rollplay was later further developed into a whole world by him. No a very interesting one, because he doesn’t know a lot about history and social customs of the past. Basically he has been riding a nostalgia train. But ultimately his DM style and negotiation over his pay resulted in Itmejp going with Adam Koebel, who despite looking like a SJW freak has a very interesting collaborative style with his players. His career ironically ended when he described a female player‘s character experienced something akin to a robot orgasm, so all of the SJW freaks who he cultivated all this time cancelled him. From that day on he completely disappeared of he face of the earth and he had a very lucrative career and even developed his own system.
Now they are all doing their own thing.'

Neal and Stephen tell it differently. They, with Adam, had agreed to bargain collectively and secure a good deal for all three for future Rollplay shows. Adam backstabbed the other two with a deal that left him as the sole DM.

>Adam Koebel
>Interesting DM Style
Have you SEEN anything he's made? Swan Song meanders nowhere for 50 episodes before ending in a time loop that goes back to episode 1. He's allergic to punishing players, and the PCs always fail upwards.

Neal's setting might be dull, but at least the PCs have to earn their success. Stephen was the best of the three and got fucked over even harder, he's not got a successful DM streaming career to keep him relevant in the nogames space.'

I was giving an abridged version. But there is no reason why every paid GM you interacted with has to collectively bargain with you. If you like someone better, it‘s completely okay to just play with him instead.

Stephen was cool, but his campaigns were cursed by bad luck and always ended too soon. But yeah I liked him best too. Adam at least tried to make it interesting.. Sure maybe some things are a miss, but he takes a risk to make it interesting. You can also tell in Court of Swords he learned about Eastern mythologies and incorporated them to make it interesting. He is really creative. Just compare his shadow world where people exist eternally and eventually forget and reinvent themselves with Koibu‘s shadow/demon world in Frozen Frontier which just had masses of random demons eternally fighting each other with the only interesting thing being that they are seemingly zealous, but abandoned by the Gods.
I am politically the exact opposite of Adam Koebel, but I never noticed him being annoying with it. I‘d be his friend and play with him and probably be the only guy who is „meh“ at his „roleplay rape“ of another player and has his back. He is an interesting person. Koibu on the other hand would be infuriating to play with. The constant rule lawyering, because he forgets his own rules and if you don’t pay attention he does absolute unfair, unfun bullshit. These moments will stick with you longer than his normal DMing skills, which are average, passable, not great. His reputation as a hardcore DM is very overrated. Making boring things tedious isn’t fun or good roleplay. I love how Adam Koebel just simply came up with „montages“ to solve that problem. Now you can say it‘s cringe to act like Dungeons and Dragons is a tv show, but I don’t care.

Obviously you and all of the other players should be getting as drunk on alcohol and/or high on marijuana as possible while playing, because your GM is clearly an idiot, and the only reason to gather with these people and "play" this "game" is to enjoy camaraderie together, using the "game" as merely a prop or vehicle for interaction, and so you should treat it like going to the bar to get loaded and swapping outrageous fish tales while drinking.

Frozen Frontier was his best campaign and even that had severe issues.
Tides of Death started interesting as a concept, but too quickly devolved into PCs turning into murder-hobos and then randomly deciding to be revolutionaries with no real motivation or plan. But it wasn’t even the PC‘s fault they turned murder-hobo, because Koibu explicitly created the threat of a brutal bureaucracy, which would put them in chains simply for being shipwrecked survivors without papers. It was too artificial of a motivation for them to turn into liberators.
Frofro also had more interesting players. The German guy (I‘m German too) was extremely uninteresting and played his character like a bland piece of paper. Pokemon guy on the other hand intentionally played a very simple character, but he did that relatively well, maybe he wasn’t confident to aim higher. But Frofro on the other hand had phenomenal players, who played unique and interesting characters. I have never seen Neal give so much leeway to anyone before, when it came to inventing new magic.'
