Since I'm a filthy drunk, that good thing was usually a shitty dive bar with a bunch of lunatics inside (which all places have), but I would also do my best to seek out nice nature spots or interesting restaurants or whatever

The only place where I found literally nothing of value, and I really did try hard, was Topeka. The city is tan and flat and the people are all dusty and sad.

Aside from the Eval Kneivel museum, that poor town has nothing going for it. Even the locals would just shrug their shoulders if I asked them what notable things their city had.'

Nothing to really do there besides checking out the State complex, they have a museum and you can walk around the legislative building which is historic, but the rest of the government mall is just marble brutalism.
They have breweries, restaurants, a few quaint hip streets but... That's it, there's nothing around it since Albany is *it* and half of it is crumbling mill areas.

I worked as a photographer and I traveled through Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Delaware. Of the four states, Pennsylvania had so many small towns that were so terrible they seemed like a third world country. McKees Rocks, Chester, Lancaster, Uniontown, York, Erie, Redding, Allentown, you wouldn't expect them to be so bad. They were fucking awful. Every town had a huge ghetto filled with houses that were crumbling. You'd see trash on the streets, cars on blocks, people just wandering around aimlessly in the middle of the day looking drunk and high.

Maryland actually had a lot of nice suburban and rural areas that were all white. The boons all live in PG County and Baltimore, which is the only place most tourists are probably going to see in Maryland. Places like Kent Island, Mount Airy, Thurmont. Most of it is just boring farmland and little towns. Outside of Baltimore, I never saw the kind of nightmare hellscapes in Maryland that I would regularly see in Maryland.'

Aurora, IL. Nobody lives there, only cars. Spent 5 hours there and saw 4 people not inside a car or the businesses I went to. From the outside it looks pretty similar to Elgin, but visiting both, they're wildly different. Elgin was cute, fun few days there.
Miami. There was a lot I liked about it but even more that I hated. You will get hit by a car if you walk anywhere. My airbnb was great though, literally a plywood box not even large enough for a queen bed attached to a small house in Overtown with window bars and a steel fence and two more chain link fences enclosing the property and the adjacent houses from the street. Host was an older cuban guy, he was great, and there were a few long term airbnb residents in other rooms. 15 minute walk to downtown and a metro stop 2 min away for $20/night, great deal. Everyone's a dick in miami. Food was great, metro trains are brand new, biking to key biscayne was sketch af but great views and bill baggs park pretty. cool seeing the architecture and nature and differences from the northeast. Do any men actually do this? I know women do it and I never understood why. All cities are shit. Cities are places you travel to if you have a purpose (like a business trip), not for tourism (possible exception for a couple of genuinely historic cities like Rome). If you travel to a city for tourism, the city itself should be a base for tourism outside the city not the focus of tourism. For example the last city I traveled to was Denver and I only went there so I could meet up with friends who live there to do a road trip to Yellowstone. I barely spent any time in the city and I don't understand people who actually travel to cities so they can spend time in the city. That includes NYC or any other "fancy" city female tourists love.'

Reno was a city when Vegas was nothing but empty wasteland in the desert, the first casinos in Nevada were in Reno which was the main population center in that state until the 1960s. Vegas really only took off when air conditioning became affordable and common in buildings and then quickly eclipsed Reno due to its proximity to LA. Reno isn't really much of a gambling town, the economy is based more on normal things like warehouses and less on gambling but it attracts a ton of blacks and asians from the bay area.'

In Massachusetts, my home state, contenders for worst place ever include but are not limited to Holyoke, Springfield, and most of Worcester and Lowell (although these latter two are improving somewhat; Lowell is barely 50% shithole now). I avoid the city unless I absolutely have to because I hate brown people and homeless. I can certainly imagine. I left the region a long time ago and haven’t been to either (apart from driving through/past) in a lot of years, but Lowell seemed totally alright last time I actually stopped there. But I like Cambodian food and music, so I’ve always had a soft spot for Lowell.

I keep hoping that renewal is around the corner for Holyoke; there are signs that some greedy property developer types are starting to convert some of the copious derelict industrial buildings and warehouses there into hipster live-work lofts and art studios for people that have been priced out of places like Northampton and Amherst, but it has yet to take off in a real way as far as I can tell.'
