I just packed my backpack took a train out of town to a good on ramp and then backed out. I always wanted to try hitchiking when I was younger but once I got to that dirty highway i just started to feel like this is really stupid especially since I am 26 years old now and should be focusing on my career and have also already driven across the entire US from coast to coast. Is this pointless? Seems like I can already expect what I'm gonna see since I'm so familiar with the US by now. It's just gonna be a shity way to get to Chicago since plane tickets aren't too expensive right now. The only thing I feel like I'm gonna get out of this is that it make me feel more like a man by doing something adventurous.';

If you are not enthusiastic about the prospect of spending hours in close proximity to a weirdo driver, you shouldn't be hitchhiking.
Put Pittsburgh on your sign instead of Chicago, you're more likely to find someone headed there.
You could hop a freight train if you want adventure outside the bounds of normie approved travel behavior.

I hitched all up and down the west coast back in the mid-00's when I was living at a hippy school / commune in northern California. We did it because the school didn't have enough cars. It was a fun way to get around and meet people so long as there wasn't a tight deadline to arrive somewhere, but, when we later bought more cars, we did a lot less hitching.

I think the coolest ride I got was when a former madam picked up my girlfriend and me just outside of Seattle in a V12 Jag and drove us at 100+ MPH the whole way down to our exit in northern California while hotboxing us.

My longest trip was after getting kicked out (boring internal drama) when I hitched solo all the way back home to Dallas with only $20 in my pocket. It took about a week, but thanks to cool people I met on the road and experience gained at the school, I still had some money left when I arrived.'

If you want adventure consider doing partial parts of the big hiking routes in the US. Pacifc Crest Trail for example. Theres an equivlent in thr appalacians but I dont reccomend it, unless you want lyme disease. Or you could fly to euorpe and follow some ancient pilgramge trail.

I’m a pretty moral, polite person, but I probably couldn’t help myself if a vulnerable attractive woman was at my whim to get to her destination. I’ll leave it at that.

It's not quite THAT bad, but yeah, there are many places where it is illegal, and often will be winked at unless the cops want to hassle you for other reasons ans hitching gives them an excuse. Know the rules in the place that you are.'

People who pick up tend to be oddballs. Grungy punk types, hardcore rednecks, religious types who want to convert you, normal bored people who just want to chat (they do still exist). Men looking for sex apparently exist too, regardless of your gender, but I've never met one.

It's illegal in six states and pretty much unenforceable even in those (just another "fuck poor people" law in the same vein as vagrancy and loitering). That said, rural and suburban pigs will absolutely hassle you anywhere if they see you out in the open and think they can get away with it. It's a big part of why I neither hitch nor bike in public.'

Man you've got some really shitty advice.

I've hitchhiked coast to coast so I can most definitely attest to the fact that it is possible to hitchhike. Only thing is you should be prepared to wait between 1-3hours so don't give up because you don't get picked up in 20 mins, you will definitely get picked up it's just a matter of being patient.

Good thing is that the only people that pick up hitchhikers in the US today are genuinely the nicest people of society and hitchhiking in my experience has been the best way of meeting genuinely kind and interesting people which are hard to come by these days.

But you shouldn't do it because you want to feel more like a man because hitchhiking forces you to depend on others and being a man is about accepting responsibility and being dependable. If you want to be a man learn a skill that can benefit the community or join the army. Hitchhiking is purely for the fun of meeting random people and seeing different parts of the country although I would recommend doing in the western portion of the country instead.'

Unless you’re a women putting out you might find it difficult to find people willing to drive you anywhere. Hitchhiking was big before people knew about the interstate killer. And now we even have Uber so people won’t feel bad enough to stop and help you. Risk is too high. You might get stranded somewhere and have to walk some long miles to get anywhere. But if you’re OK with a mix of backpacking and hitchhiking go for it. You’ll be dirt poor and be careful you don’t freeze to death in the winter months. Another option of transportation is by train if you’re brave enough to ride the tracks, there is a whole society dedicated to stowing away on freight trains.'

I've done quite a bit of hitchhiking in the US but mostly hiking/backpacking related (resupply trips to town or getting back to my car after a one way trip). Some town-to-town trips too but never tried cross country. Never had a bad experience but sometimes I had to wait a long time before getting picked up. The people who live along the long distance trails are used to hitchhikers and are more willing. In Turkey and Laos I was always picked up within the first 3 vehicles, was faster than taxi and cheaper plus met some interesting folks that way. My biggest advice is to smile and pick a spot on the road that is easy and safe for the driver to pull over.'

'I've stopped and picked people up a few times. They've never been people I've wanted to hang out with. They're usually some kind of junkie, drunk or druggie, often an American Indian off his reservation that's been on a 10 day bender until he got a night in jail or ran out of money. Often they'll be hungry and want you to buy them food, or will want a significant deviation from your route. Sometimes they're the occasional hippy backpacker but they're usually insufferable too and will want to do things like smoke weed in my car or make stops so they can buy drugs. I don't pick them up anymore.';
