DN isn't a masterpice but still is pretty ambitious project. the plot's premise of doing crime without being caught, the mindgames and Light fucking around with rules in the Notebook were pretty interesting; also the character writting was really good (mostly male ofc). I think now Ohba and Obata are just out of creative juice after putting so much work that they struggle to exceed fan's expectations after their magnum opus';

So many doujins have probably been lost to time now, since nobody ever scanned them and they will never be reprinted.';

Ultimately I don't know much about the second-hand doujin market (any smarter anons please weigh in!) but I get the impression there's a strong flavour-of-the-month element to prices and to what attracts bidders at auction. I got all of these at opening bid if I recall. Print runs are low, but I imagine the survivability rate is high compared to tankos and magazines and etc. But I might be completely off-base here.

The Santa L image was a dead-end for me, but a poorly upscaled and edited version has been frequently reposted online. I'm guessing it was only ever posted to the artist's defunct website in low res, or nobody ever scanned it if it was printed. Same with pic related.

I can tell! This is real dedication. Years and years ago when I was doing scanlation we had this very ambitious plan (which went almost nowhere in the end -- many such cases) to cover all the obscure pre-fame works of this one mangaka we really admired. A very fun challenge trying to track down all her early doujins, done under different names and etc., at the second-hand retailers. You remind me of that a lot.

I saw some old discourse about how "uke!L" is overdone, but from what I've seen there seems to be a pretty even split in both doujins and fanfiction. That makes sense, since the two are framed as equal matches by the narrative.

In fact, I think I see more fics with L topping the last decade of AO3 fics. Maybe it's one of those cases where a trope was so over-done people got sick of it and pendulum swung hard in the other direction.

Since Light is kind of an evil bastard and completely full of himself, I can see the appeal of humbling him and making him take the D, especially from a law and order standpoint. But I prefer seeing their relationship as reciprocal, and I can't image Light relinquishing control in any consensual scenario. I feel like L would let Light be in charge just to see how much of his Kira-side he lets slip. Besides, L gives the impression of being kind of lazy, and he doesn't have anything to prove (unlike Light). And I think it's kind of hot when the younger man is topping.';
