Vietnam 67-68, MACV SOG Recon team

Get dropped in sterile equipment 100+ miles from any friendly support deep in the Laotian jungle or Cambodian plains. No artillery, limited tac air (particularly in Cambodia), and no friendly ground forces at all. Just you, 1-2 other Green Berets, 3-6 Indige, and a hundred thousand NVA around you. Sneak through the jungle and pull insanely dangerous recon and psych missions so top secret that no one knew about them for 30 years after the fact. Night inserts and extracts (very rare in Nam), McGuirre rig extractions (hanging from a helicopter), all the good shit. Every day in SOG is pucker factor 10. 100% casualty rate and more Medals of Honor than any other unit in the war, and that was even with a biased Army command that routinely downplayed, covered up, or just outright denied, anything they did. It's absolutely insane, there is like a 65% chance you are gonna die or go MIA. But imagine the stories, prestige, and just pure fucking adrenaline. These guys actually got to live out the most dangerous game.

NGL that campaign sounds like a lot of fun, Sherman's memoirs of it are really interesting. Apparently they lost a thousand guys across the March due to Confederate bushwhackers and guerillas and scattered skirmishes with Confederate holdouts that tried to slow down the army. Obviously, it didn't work.

My favorite anecdote is when the Union soldiers captured a courthouse the Rebs were trying to burn down and held a mock session of the Confederate senate in it where they surrendered to the Union forces. Sherman wasn't there but he said he laughed when he heard what they had done and thought it was good fun.';
