i would say is a standard. One friend once told me for him, a stick figure that resemble his fav characters is more than enough because he lacks a "critique eye" that allows him to see the flaw in a piece and i believe this is the case for most people.

the two on the left are beg tier and the 2 on the right are really good in many levels, you can argue with me here for hours about what is "good" or "bad" on these pieces but the fact is that is the same character and all 4 got around pretty good numbers, except for 3 that is triple because is obviously superior.

That's why it's good to get an audience that likes oc content, whether it be characters or environments or just unique art in general. Fanart and FOTM has so much competition so that if you're not the cream of the crop you're gonna get ignored, with just how many people you're competing with to win the social media game. Of course, skill matter and subject matter are important as well; having high skill and eye-catching (read: porn) subject matter is going to give you a higher chance of being seen. Though for skill there's definitely diminishing returns, as >>7132744 points out.

It's hard to get that kind of audience though, to be fair. I think the easiest way is to do fanart for other artists' characters, so they put more eyes on your work. You can find an artist you like, find one of their characters you like, and draw it. You don't have to do any extreme dick-sucking, you just need to be earnest about your drawing, and you'll probably get retweeted by the artist. If your other work is REALLY good/appealing, they might give you a follow and retweet any of your other oc art in the future. So basically just keep drawing what you like while interacting with artists that you like.';
