been there, on my expereience i would sumarize it to:

> find your reason to learn, without it learning is pointless. what are your favorite artists? what do you wanna become? pro? hobby?

> start an influence folder and save the stuff you really like for future study, it will shape your style and give you a reason to continue. (no hoarding)

> learn general art fundamentals, a book, a video course, formal education, whatever but get a solid base, avoid bad teachers.

> learn about figure drawing and character design.

> learn about backgrounds and composition.

> don't forget to create a realistic schedule that involves personal and deliberate practice. don't chew more than you can eat (time and skill wise) and keep a good flow.

> when you are good enough, transition to whatever discipline you wanna pursue. animation, comic, illustration, 3D, ...'
;

If you want to draw characters, draw characters. Try to draw somewhat realistically, the people who only draw heavily stylized art usually progress very slowly (this is from personal experience). This doesn't mean that you can't draw anime art, anime art is fine, as long as you try to draw 3-dimensional anatomically correct characters. Always draw with a reference, this doesn't mean you need to 1:1 copy your reference image, just use it as a guide for how your pose/body should look. Your drawing should be challenging to you, but not so challenging that you don't even know where to start. Critiquing is important too, analyze your drawing after you finish them and look at the things that suck about the drawing (be specific, "everything about it sucks" isn't helpful) so that you can improve those things next time. The most important thing really is, just drawing, if you draw for 1000 hours, you'll obviously be a lot better than you were at the start, but I've seen people who still suck after 7 years of consistent practice, that's usually because they didn't do the things I listed above, not because they didn't have the art talent gene.'

I suggested something that might interest you because it is easier to practice drawing what you like/want to instead of burning out drawing 1000s of shapes like a dummy.'

I'd rather do shapes because there's less shame in it.
If i were to draw something i enjoy i immediately would have to open up a window into my soul.

Why would i open that up on a shitty ass drawing that's guaranteed not to be good in any way shape or form.'

lower your standards, draw a freaking spongebob or some meme shit for fun instead of an overwhelming anime/movie character. trying to get an accurate drawing is still practice'

First off, don't be discouraged if your drawings are ass. Everyone starts there, so just accept that whatever you put down is gonna suck for a while, derive enjoyment from the things you do get right and your progress, rather than bring yourself down because of what you are missing.
Practice some fundies, but don't get stuck in this phase, I'd personally recommend Brent Eviston's beginner course, or you can go through your favorite beginner's how to draw book. You want to develop 2 skills early on: how to copy accurately, and how to put down lines the way you want them to, in the shapes you want them to (and basic understanding of 3D forms and perspective).
Once you kinda get this (again, don't get stuck in this phase), just draw. Try to make some form of complete drawing, and post it to /beg/ looking for advice. Let people tell you which parts suck the most, then go train those areas before coming back and trying again. Be humble, assume everyone else knows better than you and don't die on a hill about how your shitty doodle "actually has a well drawn face you are just crabbing", that's how you stay a permabeg. If someone says "your hands suck" it means they suck, go study hands for a while (do master studies).'

This is a good choice but by week 2-3 he should bail and pick another course. Either huston or villpu/hampton videos + books'

'>find your reason to learn, without it learning is pointless. what are your favorite artists? what do you wanna become? pro? hobby?
Pretty much animu and manga as cringe as that is. Pro would be a dream but it's just absurd to dare think that i'd ever reach a level sufficient for that.
>>7152646
>start an influence folder and save the stuff you really like for future study, it will shape your style and give you a reason to continue. (no hoarding)
Probably a bad sign but i don't really consume all that much art. I used to be more into it back when still had a twitter and i'd just follow dudes on there. Nowadays it's literally just manga stuff and the occassional illustration that somehow slips into my algorithms. Should work on that.
>learn about figure drawing and character design.
Do you need to to gesture first? Or do you just rawdog figure until it clicks?

>>7152722
Gotcha! I have a lot of humility and shame so i shouldn't pick fights with people over my stuff.
The hardest part is just doing it day in and day out because i get demoralized very easily.'

whatever, don't drop your interests if you like them. your taste refines with time anyways. try to follow more art people on twitter or other sites for diversity.

>Do you need to to gesture first? Or do you just rawdog figure until it clicks?
I don't know your level, but it's important to get decent fundamentals first. you learn the comparative method (accurate shape drawing from reference) and then transition to constructive method (volumetric drawing from imagination).

if your copy skills are very low figure drawing is kinda useless.
in the end gesture is just a tool to capture a pose quickly from ref or imagination. after that you can build the character over it with the comparative/constructive method.'

Unironically try drawabox. Don't do the prescribed amount of work though, just do the exercises in small amounts up to the 250 box challenge (do not actually do the challenge). Then switch to drawing something that interests you while warming up with a few intersecting shapes. Personally I started with drawing heads. Focus on proportion and getting big shapes placed properly as well as thinking in 3d. If you have a tablet it can be useful to trace structure over photos and then copy what you traced free hand. I did a lot of that as well as drawing the proportions then dragging them over the photo reference to see where I was off. Asaro head is useful. You can draw some anime if you want but you should definitely attempt realism most times. Don't branch out too much or too little. Keep a narrow focus to help memorization, but don't get stuck just doing shit you mostly know. Like it's good to stick with heads for a while and the same angle many times in a row, but once it looks remotely passable do other angles.'

This is going to kill you. Draw just to draw. "I'm not good enough" is the motivation/passion killer. Just draw it anyway. You literally don't have to show anyone. If you don't like it, tear it up and throw it away.

Easier said than done, of course. As a total beg, I struggle with this, too.'
