When you're new I think pacing matters more than quality.
You could be reading the best book in the world but if you're being drip fed it you might not enjoy it very much.
If your reading speed is ~1 page per hour I think you'll most enjoy reading something wacky, silly, and fast paced.
Occasional gameplay is also nice; it breaks up long sections of reading and can serve as a good test of your ability to comprehend instructions.
Alice Soft is good for beginners because of this, especially their older titles (pre-2010) which have shorter H-scenes.
Obviously the point of reading eroge is the H-scenes but when your reading speed is slow long scenes can drag on and on for hours and it can get pretty dull.

And while I think if you're particularly interested in reading a classic you should feel free to jump in, it's worth noting that part of the reason some VNs are considered classics is because they're well written, and it will be difficult to fully appreciate that until you have more experience.

In any case, if you continue to read both your speed and appreciation will improve quite rapidly. After a year of practice you should be able to thoroughly enjoy any quality VN (barring a few odd corner cases).';

There are some VNs that are specifically written with people who are already familiar with the medium in mind. For example, when people who have read lots of VNs read Cross Channel it might take them longer to notice that most of the Earth's population is missing because they're used to VNs not having characters outside of the main cast. But those are outliers.
Modern VNs aren't wildly different from other forms of Japanese literature in terms of language. You might want to give them a basic heads up on what choices do, H-scenes, etc. And depending on tech literacy you may need to help them install it. But the Japanese itself should be fine. Most eroge are written at about a high school reading level.

Yes, I think that all ages VNs are fairly underrated.
Two of my favorite things I played last year had no H-scenes; Forget me not -Palette-, and Tayumi. (I highly recommend both.)
I agree that H-scenes are a crucial element of romance VNs, but not all VNs are romances. Something like, say, Wish Room wouldn't be substantially improved by adding sex scenes. It simply isn't what the story is about.
I strongly disagree with skipping any part of a VN you haven't already read, including H-scenes. Especially in the case of a new reader, where it could become habitual.
Skipping through a VN is like playing on your phone while you're "watching" a movie. It's disrespectful to everyone.
