Probably sanded using a sanding block, thus the paper doesn't follow the contour of a curve. My Gew.88 has no markings left on the sides of the buttstock however those stamped on the keel of the stock are clear and legible.

My Romanian Mannlicher Model 1893. Unfortunately it doesn't have the original stock. I have to modify this Dutch KNIL stock to fit better. But for 10% the price of an intact Romanian I felt it was worth it.

Rarity on its own: My G98/40. Not easy to find a 100% matching example in picrel condition with a bore so shiny it causes temporary blindness. I sorta overpaid as a young and eager collector, $2000 in 2012, but I haven't seen one this nice and/or fully matching since. Not to mention only 138,400 of these were ever built and the majority lost on the Ostfront.

Rare for its serial number: My Nagoya zero series also in picrel. It is one of the first 85,000 Type 99 rifles ever produced. I paid $275 last year, some guy at a show had 10 Arisakas at his table and wanted them gone fast. Still on the hunt for an original monopod to complete the early rifle setup.

Rare for it's condition? My Chiang Kai-Shek Mauser because it doesn't look like deep fried dogshit on a stick, and has a shiny but frosty bore with sharp grooves.'

I don't think so, I got my first surp as a 18yo the same day I received my license, it was a 1945 Tokarev TT33 and I paid around 100 euros for it. Knowing how much I abused it the first few months before learning more about proper care of firearms I'm happy that my first surp was such a common and cheap gun.
My second surp instead I would probably not buy again. I wanted to get a k98 and didn't do any research so I got a russian capture one for real cheap but it doesn't shoot that well and it's probably full of fake markings.

My G98 is entirely non-matching aside from the barrel and receiver. It’s missing the front sight hood and the bolt has a chip and is missing a part or two.
I got it for 800. Spare parts for these rifles are basically unobtainium and people will buy beater and sporter rifles on the cheap to rebuild their rifles and sell off the broken arts alon with the now lesser complete rifles. Supposedly back in the day there was a couple gents making spare parts for these guns but I like it’s safe to say they’re either dead or long retired. Numbers wise, probably my Brixia 1913. Only about 5,300 made. When it comes to absolute rarity, I have a rifle cobbled together post-WWI out of a Gewehr 88/05, cut down G98, and a Dutch Mannlicher stock. Overall gun laws here aren't too bad imho, once I get home I could post a pic of what my collection looks like as everything I have can be owned with a basic sport permit.
A quick rundown would be;
We have 3 kind of licenses: CCW license, Sport license and hunting license. (CCW license is almost impossible to get)
All 3 allow you to own the same amount of guns (3 common guns, 12 sport guns, unlimited hunting guns) (semiautos are not treated differently than any other firearm)
Once your license expires you can keep your guns but you can't transport them, a license in a sense is just a title for purchasing and transporting firearms, not owning as if it's just owning you can also get a nulla osta. (but it's dumb unless you just want to keep your grandpa shotty and never use it)
>general culture around guns
It can vary a lot so I'm not the least surprised you feel that way about those italians, luckily I was born and raised near the cradle of firearm culture of Italy near Gardone and here most people I know either hunt or at least are okayish around guns. Things are rapidly changing tho and the closer you get to a city the more antigun and hippy/commie like people become. I honestly have no idea how things are in other eu countries but it is always offputting just how vastly different people can react to knowing you own guns from a place to another. Too often here the mentality is "daddy government needs to regulate everything dangerous". People make fun of the UK for knoife licenses, but here a bayonet is unironically considered a weapon and you need a gun license to own one and it is subject to registration like a firearm. Luckily nobody really follows these dumber rules and anytime you meet someone to buy a bayo or ammo they greet you with the old "oh yeah, it's unregistered"
>more people who like guns or more people who hate them?
Honestly no idea, gun culture is mainly a north italy thing but I fear that the majority would be against guns.'

Weaponsguild is a good place online for how to/hand holdings. Plenty of spare parts, jibs, accessories and more for the Sten online. Mags are cheap and it’s in a caliber that ain’t dead.
PPS-43 kits are cheap but 7.62x25 is dead although you can do caliber conversions, typically in 9mm. If you really want a cheap PPS just get a used PPS-43C. It will likely function better than a kit build if you have no experience.
PPSH-41s are expensive now, are chambered in a less common caliber, and aren’t parts/accessories aren’t commonplace like the latter 2.
There is also other kits like Uzis, Yugo shit, and more but YMMV.'

Since it is bolt action, there is no operating rod to potentially damage by shooting hotter hunting loads. It's also a very beautiful rifle, with neat vintage sights that were carried over from the trapdoor Springfield era. All around it's a beautiful gun and I still take it out all of the time.

I guess the gun needed a higher comb and a fatter underside to make it look good. Hard to say whether he just chopped the top and bottom flat or if those are just covers with a bit of shaving to glue them together. Also I think it's four, look at the grip. Probably strong, just a weird way of doing it. I don't blame the smith though; he already had a good piece of wood with the grain in the right direction and it was already fit for the tang of the rifle. A little overkill compared to what he could've done and made it a little cleaner, maybe, but it works and the stain is matched. Shame about the butt pad being a little crushed but rubber does not age well. Looks like it's been sat vertically on the top edge of the pad for quite a while. Probably kept in a gun cabinet. Likely pretty clean and well kept. You could just use a slip on recoil pad to cover it if it bugs you. Or like $20 for a new recoil pad with some fitting. Or like $3 if you want to find a guy who has a bin of vintage ones...

Either way very minor issues which don't affect function for such an interesting rifle IMO.'

Most of these channels have like 20k subscribers at most so they are kinda irrelevant when idiotic "influencers" get 10M views and subscribers for acting like idiots. I might be getting bitter but I'm starting to believe we're better off without the attention of these kind of people who most like already have preconceived notions about muh scray guns. Its happened a few time near me. Suddenly one day, lots of surp at the store thanks to a dead boomer. Then months will pass and nothing. I feel the older they get and even late Gen Xers in poor health that months of not a lot of stuff will be not as long a gap between large injections of stuff at the store.'

Serial is in the AZ prefix block, so it was made by Terni. Has the side sling-swivel, bottom one was removed at some point, but this too is apparently historically accurate 'cause sometimes the factory just didn't mount them. Anon the first step after buying any surplus should be to look up how to detail strip the rifle.
Especially with old bolt actions you'll have rust where the wood contacts metal, and possibly cosmoline, all of which should be cleaned and oiled thoroughly.
Plus owning a gun and not knowing how it comes apart and back together or what it looks like inside is just... wrong somehow.'
