Me: The Zone series by James Rouch. Set in a near-future (for the early 1980s) war between NATO and the Warsaw Pact. The war has turned into a stalemate after the Russkies unwisely put East Germans and Polish units in the front line who rebelled on the first day, giving NATO a chance to stabilise the line. The war is now confined by tacit agreement to a devastated swathe of Germany called The Zone, a slaughterhouse where anything goes. The books follow a ragbag unit of American, British and German soldiers, misfits who get given all the shittiest, most dangerous jobs. Some horrifying scenes of gore-porn traumatised me when I picked these up as a kid but they're surprisingly well-written with interesting characters.'

'A collection of three first-person accounts of Sierra Leone, Chechnya (during the second war) and Bougainville. I'm in the middle of the Chechnya part and it's a dark comedy road trip with a day-by-day account of getting into the country while being escorted by a Mos Eisley tier group of Chechen mafia wearing tracksuits and leather jackets, a half-dozen very mean-looking Chechen... hockey players (which they told Georgian customs... yeah), journalists, a nutty American evangelical who is going to fight, and an American mujahid Bosnia war veteran with a prosthetic leg who is going there to be martyred. Focuses a lot on just the travel logistics, who you have to pay, meet, and what it's like to kill time in dingy hotels full of Chechens in Georgia, and other strange characters who are along for the ride. I think he meets Basayev later in Grozny during the siege but I haven't read that far yet.

Russians were bombing everything including inside Georgia to prevent people from clearing the snow off the road into Chechnya, and also setting up traps on their side of the Chechen border to hand reporters and aid workers over to gangsters to shoot them. Also nailing markets in Grozny with Scud missiles and slaughtering hundreds of people.

It's not in the story, but I have a hunch the author was basically freelancing for the CIA using journalistic cover, which is why nobody in these countries ever shot him (that'd be a bad idea). His book "The World's Most Dangerous Places" was popular with the CIA. The mujahid actually had a CIA handler who recommended that book to him, so he sought Pelton out, but he apparently told the agency to go fuck themselves. He wanted to die there and then have Pelton pull his wife and kids out, but by the time they were in Georgia, they learned they had already made it out, so the mujahid bailed on them. This is the guy, later spent time in prison in Mexico for bounty hunting and died of sepsis:

Yeah sure Eastern Block cuntries had little love for the basedviets but, from what I've seen, soldiers more or less always do as they are told. Case and point, all those East Germans that got shot by their own border guards when they tried to make a break for it. The idea of a revolt by PACT forces is probably nothing more than a western cope. At most they'll just sit inside their own barracks.'

Interesting story of a former marine who volunteers for the IRA and witnesses the retardation happening within it. Any fuddlore you could think of was believed by ira members, but this was before the internet so.
>They believed that body armor and helmets were actually bulletproof
>Helicopters were invincible
>What the fuck is sighting a rifle
>logistics and training was awful since there was no unified institution within the ira
>buy any gun from an american gunstore and throw it on the boat to Ireland
>Martin McGuinness refusing any idea that wasn't his
Turns out the south armagh brigade was the only competent unit in the whole resistance and was willing to learn new ideas. Also interestingly crawley dealt with whitey bulger during his reign, who was sympathetic to the ira but was also a psycho.'

He does a really good job of placing those accounts into the overall context of the war and a good amount of detail with helicopter flying and their operations.
It covers pretty much every phase of the war, from the recapture of New Georgia, the rushed formation of the invasion task group, the air and naval battles and the main offensive on the islands themselves. Highly recommended'
