The advantage to having mercenaries is that literally no one cares how many of them die, ever. It's always been that way. Now, back in the renaissance days the real issue was getting them to actually follow through on their contracts cuz mercs would cut and run (can't spend money if you're dead!) or they would turn against you if they had a superior force and could break yours, but in the modern era the long weenie of the law can follow you for a very long time on something like breech of contract (to say nothing about the suicidal proposition of taking on the nation that hired you with your 100 or so men). So for these guys cutting and running may mean actual jail time. Plus in many cases the government is also their ride, so you probably don't want to be stranded in Buttfuck, Iraq because you decided to bail on the contract.
