What stops manufacturers from simply taking a proven design like say, an AK, and just slightly altering it to fit a desired caliber? I imagine you'd need to fiddle a bit with gas pressure, spring tension, barrel materials etc. depending on the cartridge, but isn't that much simpler than designing a new gun from the ground up? At the end of the day you just need something to hit the primer and something to cycle the next bullet in, why reinvent the wheel?';

>What stops manufacturers from simply taking a proven design like say, an AK, and just slightly altering it to fit a desired caliber?
That sort of thing is very common. You can buy AK's in tons of calibers, including pistol and shotgun calibers. And likewise for nearly any other proven gun design. Break-action doubles exist in every caliber from .17 rimfire to 4-gauge. Pretty much every bolt-action rifle is a knockoff of the Mauser and again are available in everything from tiny pipsqueak calibers to 20mm. ARs are available in a billion calibers including shotguns. All of those guns exist in both long gun and handgun versions.

>but isn't that much simpler than designing a new gun from the ground up?
Sometimes simple isn't the point and new things have to be done in pursuit of a goal. If everyone just stuck with "what just worked" we wouldn't have today's tiny carry pieces and everyone would be carrying broomhandle Mausers.'

Patents. If those patents are expired or don't apply, then there's absolutely nothing, which is why everything "new" in the last 50 years has been an AR or AK derivative. The AR and AK themselves used design ideas from earlier guns, too.

>why reinvent the wheel?
To make something better. We've pretty much converged on the optimum firearm with current technology, which is why everything new looks virtually the same as everything else new.'

The AK has been continuously improved on for the past 70 years because it's a shit design that needs constant modernizing to keep up with the weapons systems of other militaries.
AKs were only ever popular because they were cheap. Now that they cost 2-3x as much as an AR-15, there is no reason to buy one unless you really want a shit outdated design that's hard and expensive as fuck to replace parts for.
The AR-15 is the perfect weapon because it's cheap and standardized to the point where most things just work. You don't have that with an AK.'
