Kinda both and depends on the country.
Service issues will have little customization options, unless ownership of gun related gadgets is allowed. America is probably the only country where average grunts can pay out of their own pocket to buy attachments.
Then you have spec ops and pmcs who would normally have full freedom on gun customization. Attachment industry would have caught up with future techs too.'

> integrated power and data
I have my doubts. What data, exactly, would they need to share? And as for power, that’s more likely, but it would still suck to lose power to your fancy smart scope because you accidentally left your IR illuminator on.'

Laser ranger-finder talks to fusion night-vision and thermal scope which talks to electronically controlled trigger. Trigger can't be pulled until it's on target.

I'd think high energy items like lights would have their own batteries but the power/data rail would fuel the control and reporting mechanisms for them.

AI powered C3 yells at Private Schmuckberg to replace his batteries and the onboard round count tells the armory to reorder a barrel, it's going to be replaced next month.

Once this shit is reliable the sky's the fucking limit.'

Link-16+TACAN for grunts, basically
Pic won't go anywhere for top rails, m-lok will probably supplant picatinny for anywhere else on the gun
I'd imagine either in an HMD or a single optic system you'd have ranging and IFF data
PVS-21 was two decades ahead of its time. It'd probably look something like the PVS-21's prisms in front of your eyes feeding you C2ISR data in an unobstrusive HUD that allows passive aiming integrated from a smart sight on the rifle. hyper-expensive Wilcox mount with dual flip - one flip for the data/imaging prisms, another for NODs/NOD+COTI/some kind of multispectral NOD+Thermal

if you can have sufficient bandwidth, you'd be able to feed data from a GORGON STARE UAV or E-8 JSTARS to a command Bradley/Stryker that will have persistent target marking and tracking that would let your HUD give you at least range and bearing to potential hostiles.

the issue up until now has been bandwidth and power, but in 2024 you could do exactly what I described above with a raspberry pi, some XREAL AR glasses, a FLIR camera, and an IR-sensitive FPV camera (and a couple of adafruit gps/compass/accelerometer modules)

nothing's gonna happen with guns other than typical evolution of thermal/NV scopes.

I think you'll see a new mount interface like PCAP or MLOK come along that could do pic's job but lighter and cheaper. Integrated optics and tech may become a thing again once the tech plateaus and you can get something built in that doesn't suck dick. That or maybe something like the VHS where parts can be substituted for either rails or integrated parts fairly quickly'

Shame it died with the XM-8 though it kind of lives on with Mlok in a way. Not the same obviously but it's on the right track'

Guess the mount interface isn't tight enough to hold zero. AFAIK there's no LAMs that mount to mlok either'

Picatinny rail or something similar. The modularity of a rail has significantly more value than some goofy hologram thing. Unless the hologram can be a collimator, magnified optic, vertical grip, night sight, thermal sight and infrared laser and white light all at the same time.'
