I'm not a fucking brit monkey... But to answer your question, thats pretty simple, because here in germany your paths are basically set at the age of 12. You will be assigned to one of 3 school paths, which directly affects which jobs you are going to be able to take.
If you get assigned to Hauptschule, you'll be jobless and/or criminal. If you get assigned Realschule, you'll get a job right after school and be typical low wage working class. If you get assigned gymnasium you are (unlike the other two) allowed to go to university afterwards, and because it's free most will take that path.

And as you don't really have much contact with people from other paths, basically everyone who took the same path as me will end up in a similar situation';
