Don't get me wrong, later books have their good points, but the villain alone makes this one GOAT'

I'm sure the book was fun enough, but you retards are really too easily impressed. Throw in a bit of racism and you're simping like teen girls at a boy band concert. It's ridiculous.'

Live and Let Die is fun but it was never among my favourites. Not sure why. It doesn't do much wrong.

A few random thoughts:

Best Girl: Tracy (OHMSS)
No contest. “Angel with a broken wing” is the ideal female archetype and I'm not ashamed to admit it. (OK, now I think about it, all the Bond Girls except Gala Brand fit this archetype. I don't care. Tracy is the best.)

Best Villain: Grant, Klebb & Kronsteen (From Russia With Love)
Normally you want just a single figure but they’re all so deliciously evil.

Best Villain Scheme: Moonraker
“Bio-warfare via hypnotized girls” (OHMSS) is cute but "blow London up" is more spectacular.

Best Action Sequence: OHMSS
Bond skis down the mountain to escape and Tracy appears out of nowhere and rescues him with her 1337 driving skills. (Do people still say 1337?)

Best Travel Writing: Live And Let Die
Can’t argue, the Harlem thing is done well. I prefer the Bahamas (Thunderball) or Jamaica (Dr No) though. IF was a much better travel writer than espionage writer.

Best Incidental Vignette: Bridge Game (Moonraker)
Maybe this is just because I play bridge. The little digressions are definitely the best bits of the books. The gypsy fight in FRWL, the golf game in Goldfinger, the centipede in the bed in Dr. No... so many good ones.

Best Opening: OHMSS
Evocative bit of travel writing (summer evening at a French seaside resort) plus intriguing mystery plus deftly-handled flashback... it's got it all.

Best Ending: Casino Royale / OHMSS
I just like tragic endings. If you want the cliché “007 gets girl” then probably Dr No. (Nymphomaniac child-of-nature, what's not to like?)

I suppose overall OHMSS gets the top spot for me. Of the short stories, Quantum of Solace is the best I suppose, but I like The Hildebrand Rarity. (Which of them killed him?)'

Can't argue with most of this.

>no glamour
You're right, the tone is much more dour. That's surely because it's set in England. A case of "It's OK to let your hair down in exotic far-off lands, but back at home you have to behave properly."

>diverting the nuke to kill Frenchmen
Would be funny if he had redirected it onto Paris. But he makes it go off in the North Sea and blow up the enemy submarine, doesn't he? No Frenchmen Were Harmed In The Writing Of This Novel.

>kino bridge card game
Best chapter in the franchise.

And you forgot . . . .
>best kino early chapter-ending moment of ominous foreshadowing —

It was a few minutes to six and there was thunder about. The sky threatened rain and it had become suddenly dark. Across the square from him, high up in the air, a bold electric sign started to flash on and off. The fading light-waves had caused the cathode tube to start the mechanism which would keep the sign flashing through the dark hours until, around six in the morning, the early light of day would again sensitize the tube and cause the circuit to close.

Startled at the great crimson words, Bond pulled in to the curb, got out of the car and crossed to the other side of the street to get a better view of the big skysign.

Ah! That was it. Some of the letters had been hidden by a neighbouring building. It was only one of those Shell advertisements. 'SUMMER SHELL IS HERE' was what it said.

Bond smiled to himself and walked back to his car and drove on.

When he had first seen the sign, half-hidden by the building, great crimson letters across the evening sky had flashed a different message.

They had said: 'HELL IS HERE... HELL IS HERE... HELL IS HERE.''
