I've been looking into Lewis Carroll recently, and hopefully this thread won't dissolve into a pedophilia discussion, but he seemed like an interesting dude. Well versed in many subjects, committed to nonsense, and unexpectedly influential. I've read the wonderland stuff, and I want to get my hands on Sylvie and Bruno.

I know little about the Tollbooth, but I'm open to exploring. What is there to like?'

It's similarly into logic and word games like the Alice books.'

Phantom Tollbooth all the way. Absolutely giga-based. It is a purely righteous parable about restoring order and cultivating virtues for their own sake. The demons on the mountain are probably of the most realistic depictions in fiction'

Correct. Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass are both essentially perfect children's books, their organizing sense of dream-logic is exact, and they are delightful to children and adults on multiple levels. The Phantom Tollbooth is trying desperately to be Alice in Wonderland, but it is not dreamlike but Monkey Cheese lol! wacky. Kids don't like it as much, adults find it grating and childish.'

This isn't true but the best children's literature is as legitimate as Moby Dick or Karamozov and better than whatever pretentious doorstop novel /lit/ is pretending to have read today. You have to appeal to both children and adults, without pandering, and if you think it's easy read a random popular children's book and explain why it is unreadable. Carroll, EB White, Lewis (Narnia), Dahl, and a very few others are unironically great writers and true artists.'

I'll go a bit off the beaten path of Tolkein/Lewis and go, for young boys ages 8-12 (or younger if you vet the stuff carefully and read it aloud with your son):
Haggard
Stevenson
Richard Hughes
Kipling
Frances Hodgson Burnett
Baum
Kenneth Grahame
Pullman
Le Guin
That's the stuff I grew up on that I reread and still enjoyed, I think.
As an aside I'm fond of the Little Prince in particular'

"Children's" books should teach life lessons in a fun and appealing way. "Adults" books are often nonsense telling some dramatic story. This is why my 12th grade teacher threw out all the curriculum and replaced it with uncensored fairy tales, myths we had to translate from Latin, and "The Little Prince". The latter work was honestly more important and influential to me than any of the "classics" I had to read in school. Every 17 year old needs to read "The Little Prince"!'

I think it speaks to innocence and virtue that had been stripped away by outside factors in adult life. the Redwall series fucking kills every modern fiction ive come across yet. Not nostalgia, i started reading them like 6 years ago. It reminded me of the first time I read Treasure Island and the Hobbit. (also having a simple, straightforward story without cynicism or masturbatory grandstanding helps)'
