Worthless faggots like you could never understand being a man. Shackleton was a gigachad of epic proportions. He asked for men to join him for an adventure that they may never return from. He risked a cold miserable death in a cold forgotten ocean to save his men. He is the textbook leader for when in crisis.

The Brits used to be the most badass people on the planet. They may have not reached the south pole first, bur the hell they went through in the attempt, and their antarctic and arctic expeditions are examples of the pure power of an unbreakable human spirit. Teams of men man hauling boats across the arctic, being kept alive by little more then their pride, crossing the most uninhabitable land known to man just for glory of doing it. Sure in the end most of them died in some of the expeditions (not Shackleton's), but that was a known risk to take.

Anyone who can equate an expedition like Shackleton's to meaningless glory cannot call themselves a man.'

This. Dude expertly handled leading a group of men in the most horrific conditions imaginable and managed to keep them together and sane enough to come out alive. He knew how John Franklin fucked up and lead his men to death in a similar situation before them and did a great job at keeping the same thing from happening to his crew.

Luckiest part of that trip was that they made it across the Drake passage alive. Otherwise, they continually got fucked over by the weather and wind pushing them away from their destinations and causing maximum suffering, but managed to push through.'

>Although Cornelisz had left the soldiers, led by Hayes, to die, they had in fact found good sources of water and food on West Wallabi Island. Initially, they were unaware of the massacres taking place and sent pre-arranged smoke signals announcing their finds. However, they soon learned of the killings from survivors fleeing Beacon Island. In response, the soldiers devised makeshift weapons from materials washed up from the wreck. They also set a watch so that they were ready for the Cornelisz' men, and built a small fort out of limestone and coral blocks.
>Cornelisz seized on the news of water on the other island, as his own supply was dwindling and the continued survival of the soldiers threatened his own success. He went with his men to try to defeat the soldiers marooned on West Wallabi Island. However, the trained soldiers were by now much better fed than Cornelisz' group and easily defeated them in several battles, eventually taking Cornelisz hostage. His men who escaped regrouped under soldier Wouter Loos and tried again, this time employing muskets to besiege Hayes' fort and almost defeating the soldiers. However, Hayes' men prevailed again just as Sardam arrived. A race to the rescue ship ensued between Cornelisz' men and the soldiers. Hayes reached the ship first and was able to present his side of the story to Pelsaert. After a short battle, the combined force captured all of Cornelisz's group.

So much so that they're planning to build a replica on the nearby Beacon Island (which historically speaking, is a FUCKING LAME move) only because Beacon has seasoning fishing villages and you can actually catch a boat there. Beacon Island is also where the crew and passengers landed and were massacred, so it's a nice historical site for the wreck's story but NOT where the fort was. Anyway. Because you live in a former English colony your history lessons lean heavily towards "shit the English did." You were never taught about Russian exploration and conquest of the east. You've never heard of Zheng He. You've never heard of the Mali Empire. You were never taught about Mansa Musa. And this is because they happened without the English involved. Which is fine, because there's a lot of history, not all of it can be taught K-12, so some filtering is to be expected. But just because you've never heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.'

There was an expedition that took hundreds of photographs (when glass plates were still used).
The ship became icebound so they headed out on foot, with makeshift sleds made from lifeboats.
The captain ordered all of the glass plates destroyed so the crew would not be tempted to "smuggle" them back on the sleds- which would have been unnecessary weight during a life threatening trip.

Many years later the ship was located, fully intact, including the smashed glass- which is a shame because all of the work those men put in could have been recovered.

And I don't remember if it was that voyage or the OP, but one failed expedition the captain didn't want his men to lose moral by thinking they were going to be stranded for many months so he forbid them to hunt more than they needed to store food when game was plentiful and when winter came the men were digging bones from previous kills out of the snow to eat the marrow because everything had migrated.
They slept in sleeping bags with fellow crew mates that had died days earlier because they were too tired from hunger to take the bodies out of the tent.

Lots of cool (shitty?) expedition accounts from that era'

That was Shackleton. He had a neurotic fear of his men becoming demoralized and made some retarded decisions when they were stuck on the first ice floe (Ocean station iirc). You're getting the second part conflated with another expedition, cause nobody died in Shackleton's trip. Though, the sleeping bags that Shackletons' men were using were made out of reindeer hide and were slimy and rotting by the end of their expedition, so they had to share sleeping bags and toss out the ones that were too rotted.'

Henry Hudson was a pretty badass but ruthless explo'r and he was literally obsessed with finding the northwest passage to get to the Pacific via the Arctic. For over a decade he commanded some of the most important and daring expeditions in North America, starting in the late 1500s.

Finally one summer he breached the far north ice flows and discovered the gigantic sea that is now called "Hudson Bay". By the time they oriented themselves to this gigantic landscape their ship got icebound - luckily they were an experienced crew and anchored the ship in calm water relatively close to shore. They abandoned the ship for the winter and survived on land in what could only be indescribable hardship. This is not a green landscape even in summer, and in winter they had to try and survive off whatever was on the ship and aggressively fishing the bay for protein and fat. There was much disdain and turmoil amongst the crew, and many died of malnutrition and acts of violence.

After months the ice began to melt and what was left of the ragged, angry, malnourished crew were able to make their way back to the ship owing their lives only to the graces of God. And they STILL had to survive the depressing spectre of a 3-4 month journey back to England ahead of them, through the open and violent north Atlantic and without adequate supplies.

Aaaaand then Hudson said nope, we're going west and we're continuing and we're finding dat Northwest Passage.

The crew immediately threw him, his teenage son, and a few loyal bootlickers onto a wooden paddle boat and set them adrift amongst the spring icebergs while the ship sailed back to England with fewer mouths to feed.'

Written historical record ends there for Hudson, although Inuit oral tradition maintained for over two centuries tell of and old man, a boy, and two crazy men arriving at a seaside village in dire straits. The old man (presumably Hudson) died quickly of waste and disease, and the two crazy men were said to have murdered each other on shore. The Inuit were so perplexed as to what to do with this possibly diseased boy that they kept him leashed to a tree outdoors like an animal until he died of exposure at the end of the rope, likely naked and frozen.

The crew got back to England and were immediately put on trial for mutiny and possibly murder. None of them were executed and they eventually were all released, not because they were innocent of mutiny and murder, but because they were the only living souls to hold the maps and knowledge of Hudson's bay and the possible Northwest Passage.

Nightmares and suffering all round, but once again the interests of Big Exploration win over justice.'
