A Beginner's Guide To Fossil Hunting - Fossil Hunting Trips - The Fossil Forum

classes have finished for the year and work has slowed down so hopefully I can keep this one alive. I've made some amazing fids in the past few months that I have been gone and I hope to see what all you have found since the last thread as well. First fossil of this thread is a Placcticeras sp. about 9.5 to 10 inches in diameter was super stoked when I found it. Upper Britton Formation of the Eagle Ford Group, Denton Co. Texas'

Check the geology of your local river valleys, go for a float down a river and keep an eye out for the banks. Pull over when you see erosion, usually on the outside corners. Claim to be taking a lunch break if the Park Rangers show up. That's how the ammonite poachers do it around here.'

Absolutely this, look up your county geologic map and cross reference it with that of satellite maps, this tends to work the best for me and is how I've been able to find all my spots. Look for sedimentary rock or alluvial deposits as that is where you can possibly find fossils. Alluvial deposits can be a hit or miss but here in DFW with the Trinity River it allows me to find stuff from the late Ice Age like Chamel teeth. The best kind of sedimentary rock to find fossils in are limestone, chalk, and shale. It's possible to find some fossils in sandstone as well but where I am located this is not the case. the partial map provided is a good example of where I hunt, the blue (Kef) is where my ammonites are found and the boundary of the green (Kau) and blue (Kef) are where I find my sharks teeth. The pink, yellow, and orange are all the way from modern to Pleistocene (Ice Age) deposits. I hope this helps you a lot anon - Fossil Anon'

naturally not every fossil is one can bring home, but if it wasn't for privet collectors and hunters the amount if fossils lost to time and that will be never described by science would be immeasurable, Infact the vast majority of find of large caliber come form hobbyists and people that don't know much about the underling geology they come from and as >>2687520 said geologic formations and groups are very large and those that do have fossils typically have a large abundance of them, also for America along as you're not on federal/public land you can take as many no vert fossils as you can carry and vert fossils along as its on privet land or if you have a permit also on fed land. I've checked this creek, and it does have an outcrop of the, the white bank is an indicator of the chalk up stream though that is not the creek I look for the boundary zone in but you're not far I'd say it's a few miles away. If your cheek looking you might find it lol. another thing is that sat images don't do justice to cuts done by streams, creeks, and rivers Thake this description from an excerpt of a paper describing exposures of Kef in the Dallas area, if you are able to find it I'll show you a pic of how steep the cut is compared to the sat pic. "Locality no. 16.-The Britton formation is exposed on the south bank of the Elm Fork of the Trinity River at the point where the railroad north out of Irving, Texas, crosses the river. The Dallas-Rhome highway crosses a short distance above this point. This locality was the site, of Horton's Mill where most of Hyatt's species were collected." note the "Dallas-Rhome" highway is now known as 114 and will be labeled so in maps as this paper was published in 1942. as you asked if you know the rough topography and general depth of bedrock the method of finding locations is great and is what I mainly use to find locations outside of scientific papers.

Is it fairly simple to remove the limestone from the fossil itself? I had researched a method involving acid, but nope’d out as they claimed leaving it on too long could damage the fossil. No pix, at work at the moment. I will try to get some when I get home in a few weeks. Found them all on a hunting lease in Iraan Tx. I also have buckets of broken points/tools as well as a case of complete arrowheads all found in south and west Texas. I'm pretty sure it's lava because we have so much of it here. Some people think this is a second generation imprint of Lepidodendrales, a Late Carboniferous plant. So, the plant was covered in clay or silt, eventually fossilized, then exposed, then covered in lava. Personally, I think a large ocotillo cactus fell into a shallow puddle of lava. This would've happened in the last couple thousand years judging by how little weathering there is on the rock. I found it about 3km/1.5 miles from my house.'

You have quite the collection of fossils anon, keep up the great work. Prepping fossils isn't too hard lots of work though, this is that fellow kiwi I was taking about in my post showing how it's done https://youtu.be/5_KqO3L7cKE?si=kRSx_DA1UpHXtRCc

like >>2722210 said, you don't. This kind of /out/ hobby takes a fair bit of time, form finding to preparing them. That and I don't need to worry too much if this gen will die or not if I need to take a break for college/ life.
also>>2722217 has a point, there are a lot less people that enjoy this kind of topic even on a board like /out/
>>2722755
still better than no fossils anon, also where are you posting/collecting from if you don't mind?

Went out into some "older" rock in the mid to lower Britton Fm. of the Eagle Ford Group today and found 13 crabs/decapods not suer on the species though. Britton Fm. Denton Co. Texas - Fossil Anon'

honestly you could be right about ceramic strainer... I also found parts of vessels and plates and such so it's not completely out of place.
the holes are quite regular, though kind of scattered, as if a kid made it, kinda messy. they all have a slight angle inside of them if you look through the holes, about 30 degrees slant in the same direction... may suggest handmade.'

hard to tell without informations about local geology. does the area have a geological map? the black mineral looks like biotite and the white some feldspar, but that's pretty standard. if that rock is documented in literature you will have better informations'

That's the thing. The feldspar isn't white, it's a pale greenish color. I have other examples of rocks with white plag feldspar and this one is different. I don't think it's discoloration because the green is pretty uniform.'

there's plenty of minerals in the feldspar group https://www.mindat.org/gm/1624

there isn't a clear boundary between different varieties thou, because impurities can be present in any composition and kind, so your extremely pale green could be caused by one thousandth of the rubidium (example) quantity that is usually responsible for the green color of amazonite. that doesn't qualify your stone as amazonite
imho your stone could be just regular anorthite, again i suggest (You) to see if the geological formation that rock belongs to has been described in literature'
