Starting my AT thru hike attempt in less than 10 days
Did 1400 miles on my first try. Got giardia and shat my brains out for 3 weeks so had to get off trail.
Actual thru hikers, majority has a trail name. I thought it was kinda gay beforehand myself but it's not a big deal either way. People overdo it, sure.
Although I will say, as a thru hiker when a day hiker asks you your name, if that ever happens, I'd usually say my real name to avoid the weird looks and having to bother explaining what a trail name is and all that.
Tldr actual thru hikers most definitely use trail names. And I'll go outside more from April to September than you will for your entire life, faggot';

In my (limited) experience, trail names come in two flavors.
The gay retarded ones like what you're posting about, which makes up the majority of trail faggots.
Or, the slightly personal nicknames. For instance, when I did a portion of the AT, I met a man named 'baby step bill' who's real name was Bill, but he often advised passerbys on acclimating to higher altitudes by slowing down your walking pace into smaller steps. He was quiet, and wore dull colors, enjoying nature on his own. We leapfrogged along the way, with me still getting used to the thinner air and keeping up my long as strides, needing to stop regularly, and him making a slow steady pace all day. By the end, he named me machete matt, because I was a dumb kid who thought I needed a machete. The name felt cool then, but looking back it was kind of silly.
Those are the trail names that are all right. Small nicknames with a small detail or story behind them. People who go "haha my name is caveman because my arms are hairy" need to be flayed and salted.';

I kind of feel the same way about the AT, that it sounds nice in principle, but the more I hear about it, the less I want to do it. The scenery and the mountains are much nicer in austria, switzerland, france for sure.
