Let's say you need more firewood than what you can find on the ground. There comes the solid knife to chop of smaller branches.

You'd carry a hatchet to process larger amounts of lumber, an axe to cut the forest down. Useful, not essential. Neither's saw for 'le' precision cuts, a tool that can not be sharpened without a special tool if at all. If you want worms you can dig with your hands.

You have no concept of how to cut down a tree.

You shouldn't be adopting a view of the outdoors from movies, anon. Go outside sometimes. Maybe bring a little more stuff than you actually need. After, see what you've used and what you didn't need. Leave the latter at home.'

Fire lighting kit is essential. Ferro rods are small, light and effective.

Sure I'll humor you. Remember you said you'd "carry an axe to cut the forest down"? And a saw for "precision cuts"? Everything about that posts screams "I've never taken down a tree". Obviously retarded things to say, so you've decided to move your goalposts to now include chainsaws.

Even if you want to reject modernity, you'd get yourself a crosscut logging saw. Unless you plan on processing your wood by sitting on it and weeping.'

So you're to retarded that I didn't mean that literally? Of course you couldn't "cut the forest down" with a hatchet, or alone.

My point was that a hatchet is unnecessary for survival. Dry wood literally lays on the ground. Trees are most likely alive, and the wood moist.

Checked. Why do I have to deal with "peeple" like you?

It's good mines say "Front Towards Enemy" xD'

No, I don't think I will. I know a lost cause when I see one.

Google how much firewood it takes to keep you warm for even a single freezing night. Then ask yourself what you'll do about shelter, bedding and the inevitable rainfall that'll fuck up your "dry wood literally lays on the ground" fantasy. You're going to have a miserable if not lethal time in whatever debris shelter you slap together.

You need a meaningful way to process firewood if you aim for "survival".'

If you take less gear, then you start having to make compromises.
Taking a bit of extra time or effort because you don't have the optimal tool can be critical in situations where you may not have a lot of usable daylight or calories and making that tool can take resources you just don't have. And sometimes you do need that tool to process your lumber, cook your food or build your shelter effectively.
It will obviously depend heavily on the season, area, length of the hike and general conditions as to how little you can get away with.
>>2717902
Decent dead wood just works if there hasn't been enough rain to soak it or if it didn't freeze while soaked.'

You just plan your trip where you know there is good wood, small standing dead trees are easy to find. You just rip them out of the ground it's easy. It's also easy to find stumps of larger dead trees and rip them out of the ground and burn the whole thing. It's also easy to rip bark off dead trees. Ring bark some small trees with a knife and they'll be fire wood next year.

Look on ridgelines, the best places to camp anyway. The wind and sun drys things out up there real fast.

I obviously /out/ I'm a completely different biome than you folks but damned if I'd need a hatchet anywhere other than a snowed in place in winter.'
