If you take less gear, then you start having to make compromises.
Taking a bit of extra time or effort because you don't have the optimal tool can be critical in situations where you may not have a lot of usable daylight or calories and making that tool can take resources you just don't have. And sometimes you do need that tool to process your lumber, cook your food or build your shelter effectively.
It will obviously depend heavily on the season, area, length of the hike and general conditions as to how little you can get away with.

You just plan your trip where you know there is good wood, small standing dead trees are easy to find. You just rip them out of the ground it's easy. It's also easy to find stumps of larger dead trees and rip them out of the ground and burn the whole thing. It's also easy to rip bark off dead trees. Ring bark some small trees with a knife and they'll be fire wood next year.

Look on ridgelines, the best places to camp anyway. The wind and sun drys things out up there real fast.
