The idea is to keep debris out of your shoes. Tucking your pants into your socks won’t do shit.

'Snake gaiters protect your legs from venomous attacks.

Snow gaiters prevent water and wind intruding into your footwear and making you cold.

Backpacking gaiters keep everything out of your footwear. If you wear trail runners when /out/, lightweight breathable gaiters are necessary to keep out scree, brambles, thorns, sticks and ticks, fireants, and light rain while allowing sweat to evaporate.

No need for them in the summer on a paved, grass or tight dirt trail. But gaiters are part of a good system under rugged conditions.

They just work, unlike goretex lined boots, which are stupid, although goretex socks can make sense.'

Snow gets caught up in your boots and in the little cracks between your socks and boots. Having an extra layer between them is waaay comfier. It's basically just for warmth, lets you kick through soft fresh snow without worry. I've heard they're good for water crossing in warmer months but haven't tried that, I just use mine for when the snow is above my feet. I consider them essential for snow hikes.'

Hiking to a deer stand early in the morning through the forest, or through tall grass, soaks your pants below the knee because of the dew/condensation.
Then you sit all day in your stand or blind as the water slowly soaks up your pants to your crotch and also through to your socks.
Options:
>wear waterproof pants that don't breathe, causing all sorts of other problems
>wear waterproof gaiters that you can pop off once you're stationary.
Other nice uses of these:
>put animal urine/scent on them instead of your poor boots and pants
>pants last longer if you live in densely wooded areas due to less wear and tear on them
>less shit gets in your boots, from briars to bark to snow
Good talk, son.'
