Stores can not be that selective, because computers handle reordering, and most of the time, backstock is what prevents them from getting new stock. Sometimes theft can be so prevalent that ghost stock can prevent the computer from reordering shit.
When companies look at McFarlane's wares every year (at trade shows like Toy Fair), they can give input on what characters should be in every wave. They'll also tell McFarlane that they should include 4 Spidermans and 4 Bumblebees in every case, because they're so popular with the kids.
99% of the time, Target/Walmart buyers are self important no-fun businessmen who know nothing about the toylines they're ordering and a lot of the times, its young assistants who made "astounding discoveries"... because they play modern video games, read modern comics, and watch modern cartoons.

I couldn't take pictures obviously, but I'll describe what I saw from memory. No story points for the movie were given, so can't really talk about that.

First, they had three cardboard cutouts for the following characters so you could get a good look at their designs.

- Superman's design looked very New52 (almost exactly like it, except for the movie crest that's surprisingly large on his chest). No red underwear, had a collar with some red accent like New52, and looked very armory (panel separations).

- Lex Luthor was in a golden power armor with a helmet on (fully covers the face, so no look at Nicholas Hoult). Surprised it wasn't purple/green, but it has a large "LL" crest on the upper-left chest area.

- Hawkgirl was in a white body uniform with some black accents, and then from her shoulders up was the traditional yellow/gold coloring. For her body suit, imagine the white track suit she wore in the Justice League cartoon, except for her whole body (full sleeves, and no midriff).

And the materials they use for the torso / bodies somehow feel squishy and brittle in the same shot. these new figures look like what you wanted - a "figure" that looks nice. everything else is a afterthought.

Characters were Superman, Lex Luthor, Hawkgirl, Hawkman (looked similar to Hawkgirl in terms of design), Metamorpho (literally looked like comic book Metamorpho with Anthony Carrigan's head), Guy Gardner (actually took me a while to realize who it was since there was no green. He was in a black jacket and black/white inner suit. Maybe the black/white suit motif is what the JLA is going for, or maybe they're going with the storyline where Guy got booted from the Lanterns? Just speculation), and Krypto (white dog and red cap, very comic book accurate).

There was a Fortress of Solitude playset where pulling on a panel will unfurl the playset, and it comes with 3" Superman, Krypto, and a giant abominable snowman monster thing figure. No idea who the monster is, and the marketing person didn't explain the story element. Literally looked like a Wampa.

A large feature figure was a 12" Superman that can do a super hero landing. You pick him up, and he extends his arms to fly, then drop him on a table, and does the super hero landing pose. Pretty cool item for kids.

Then there was a Krypto sensor drone that flies when you put your palm underneath, but the cool thing was when it's not flying, it stands regularly, and when it takes off, its tail begins to wag and its paws/hind legs go straight.

They also had some basic roleplay items there like a Superman chest piece. No other items on display, but makes sense since these items will be released in Spring '25, so probably waiting for more items to show in Fall '25 when sales are better.

This is a good point, a lot of the time they feel like they're just trying to hit a certain number without considering functionality, especially with the pseudo-butterfly joints that in some figures work well and in others make no difference at all, so the washers are basically a waste. ML is a bit better about making sure the joints are functional although they screw that up sometimes too and have their own set of issues.

Also, i like what HAsbro is doing with their shitty clothes. It almost feels like cardboard and the texture is oversized when viewed 10x blown up on camera, but from normal toy-viewing distance, it loooks so damn nice. The print on it gives it a real life texture.
