Kaiyodo Organic Action Vignett Figure Ultimate Spider-Man (Venom). Maybe 10 cm tal, very weird articulation. Exclusively uses cuts for swivel joints. There're swivels on: head, tongue, left arm, right arm, waist, left hip, right hip, left toe, right toe. I think it's pretty amazing what this guy can do. Unfortunately there's a color mismatch on the legs but in real life it's not as noticeable and either way he's too damn fun to fiddle with.
Kaiyodo Toytribe (some say Xebec but it doesn't say anywhere on the packaging) Monev the Gale. Quite a bit more sophisticated, but essentially same principles: cuts and swivels only, and a few hinges. The only areas that you may consider "deviant" are the feet and neck. The former attach to pegs that let them move -minimally- (rolling hinge) while the latter has a more intricate series of swivels and hinges or whatever. But from what I can tell there's not a single balljoint on this ~23cm behemoth. Some areas are weird and on close exception betray the limitations in certain positions but I can't help but admire the overall craftsmanship and ingenuity.

If you have any more questions or requests, shoot.'

Yes, Kaiyodo at this time was very experimental, with lots of weird and sometimes even asymmetrical joint systems. Their DOA and DMC trading figures from around this time are another good example of this ingenuity.

I own most of Nightow's Trigun line and it was similarly very creative for the time period. I miss this era because it felt like big, creative ideas were being executed, toy joints sort of hit a plateau a while back and stopped evolving for the most part. You just don't see strange wacky joint systems anymore.'

The clever choices of where and how to cut meant these little ~$4 figures could strike very nuanced poses that were difficult even for larger, more complicated toys at the time.

Swivels (like dual cut-V hips) get a bad rap because people think they're primitive. But when used right, it can create incredible ranges of motion with minimal sacrifice to the sculpt. You're free to focus on how you actually want the toy to look, instead of sacrificing proportions for balljoint range. You do need to sort of "re-learn" how to pose with them, but it's not too hard.'

I think the Patlabor revos use this type of hip joint as well. I only have the green (Helldiver?) dude, but if you work with it you can achieve pretty much anything as you said without sacrificing the sculpt much or at all.

But, even aside from that, the sometimes very real limitations make it feel like a puzzle to figure out a good pose, or even just a new pose and the result can be a happy little surprise-accident.

Seconding your sentiment on stagnation. No question, toys have mostly improved thousand-fold, especially Yamaguchi, but it's almost all so "figured-out". Like with video games where standard control schemes absolutely dominate (for good reason). But there's still some fun to be had to have to figure stuff out again and to work "against" (eventually with) clunkiness.'

>I think the Patlabor revos use this type of hip joint as well
They do, yes! Their hip range is quite spectacular as a result, and there's no weird gapping because they're swivels.

Even though new Yamaguchi developments have sort of slowed down lately, he still deserves his flowers for continuing to push the boundaries long after Bandai and Max Factory thought they had it down to a safe science, and were sitting on their asses. AY was a meteoric change from Revoltech, they slowly replaced every Revolver joint until it was a completely new (and better) system. It's remarkable, really.'

if(Anonymous && title=='undefined' && postNumber==10961738 && dateTime=='04/23/24(Tue)10:01:35') {

'I think the true best articulation setup is 10 POA: head, shoulders, torso, hips, hands and feet, with everything being a combination of ball or swivel hinge. You can do almost anything with this setup and yet it's still basic enough to allow easy movement based play with ease(like acting out a sword or gunfight, a figure running, etc in real time while actually moving the figure) which is all but impossible on more complex figures.

All of these joints are also basically guaranteed to work well and allow significant change in what the figure looks like or is doing. More specialized joints like knees and elbows down to bicep and thigh swivels, toe joints, whatever else are a lot of extra cuts for usually not much of a reward. Many of these joints also run the risk of not being very well designed, like figures not being able to bend their elbows very far or two hand a weapon naturally despite having 16+ POA.

Anyway I do also really love 5POA, but think at this point it feels outdated and simple changes that wouldn't impact the look at all should be standard on new retro style figs, like swivel waist and hands.'
